Buchanan Ingersoll Shareholder Wendy Newton Honored Among Women at the Helm
"Buchanan Ingersoll shareholder Wendelynne J. Newton was honored among the ""Women at the Helm"" in a supplement to the March 21, 2006, edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

As part of the newspaper's annual ranking of the Top 50 corporate performers in Pittsburgh business, the Post-Gazette added a twist this year by researching the number of women who hold executive roles in the public and private companies, universities, foundations, arts organizations and nonprofit health care foundations in Pittsburgh. Newton was found among those leaders.

The article highlighted Newton's career at Buchanan Ingersoll, which she joined in 1981 at a time when ""the big firms were traditionally male, and antitrust was a male-dominated area,"" according to Newton.

Newton, an antitrust attorney, now leads the firm's litigation practice in Pittsburgh.

""In some ways, I was more scrutinized,"" Newton told the Post-Gazette. ""It's an extra burden, but one that I was aware of.""

When asked about the reaction to her giving birth to her first of two children in 1988, Newton replied, ""Law firms hadn't seen women give birth, take three months off and come back full time. Today, nobody thinks twice about coming back.""

The article went on to highlight Newton's educational background, as well as examples of cases she has handled and her community involvement.

Newton advised young women to research potential employers to determine how women are treated within the company, as well as how many women hold management positions. She noted that women in decision-making positions should keep in mind the struggle professional women face in finding balance between careers and families.

""How you act reflects on the women coming behind you. If you do away with an alternative work schedule, it affects other women,"" Newton said. ""We bear that responsibility.""
