Ami S. Longstreet, a Fayetteville resident and partner at Mackenzie Hughes LLP, was recently honored as one of the preeminent lawyers in elder law in Central New York by the newest edition of the book, “The Best Lawyers in America.”

Longstreet specializes in helping clients understand estate and trust planning and administration, as well as elder law. With over 20 years of practicing law, her specialties include asset protection, Medicaid planning, and planning for individuals with disabilities.

Helmer Recognized by \"Best Lawyers in America\"
Stephen T. Helmer, a resident of Manlius and partner at Mackenzie Hughes LLP, was recently recognized as one of the preeminent product liability litigation lawyers in the region by the latest edition of the book, “The Best Lawyers in America.”

As chair of the litigation department at Mackenzie Hughes, Helmer brings 24 years of litigation expertise to the firm. He counsels various clients on education, general business, commercial and management issues, and has litigated appeals at every level in New York, including the Court of Appeals—New York’s highest court. Helmer’s practice areas include commercial disputes, personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice and insurance coverage.

Helmer is a member of the Onondaga, New York State and American Bar Associations, and the prestigious International Association of Defense Counsel and the Defense Research Institute. The law firm of Godfrey & Kahn, S.C. has announced the addition of Robert W. Irish to its Corporate Practice Group in the firm’s Shanghai, China office. His practice is focused on business law, secured lending and commercial transactions, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, customs and international trade. From the firm’s Shanghai office, Irish will advise Godfrey & Kahn clients concerning their business strategies and operations in China and service their global needs. In addition, he will establish and maintain important contacts within the Chinese business, legal and governmental communities.

Before joining the firm, Irish was a member of the International Trade and Regulatory Group at Alston & Bird, LLP in Washington, DC. He represented both foreign and domestic clients in matters involving trade regulation, customs, export controls, foreign direct investment and embargoes.

Prior to that time, Irish was a member of the Securitization Group at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP in Chicago. He represented multi-national banks, finance companies, issuers, borrowers and underwriters. His practice included structuring domestic and cross-border commercial paper funded securitization conduits, asset securitization (assets classes included trade receivables, credit card receivables, mortgages, and aircraft leases), and the acquisition of financial assets.

Irish has lived and worked in Asia for a number of years and speaks Mandarin Chinese. In addition to practicing law, Irish has taught at the undergraduate level both in Shanghai and the United States, and maintains an ongoing association with the East Asian Legal Studies Center at the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Irish received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School and his master’s degree in finance from the University of Wisconsin School of Business. He received his bachelor’s degree in international relations and economics from Tufts University in Massachusetts.

The Pennsylvania Oncology Hematology Managers’ Society (POHMS) Spring Conference held March 2-3 in Atlanta, GA

Mr. Saxton served as a moderator for The Minimally Invasive Surgery Symposium’s “Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence: Making the Grade” program. As part of the roundtable discussion, “Center of Excellence as a Risk Management Tool,” he talked about NOVUS Insurance Company, a risk retention group for bariatric and general surgeons nationwide. Mr. Saxton helped to create NOVUS and its state-of-the-art loss control tools that are specially designed to reduce professional liability exposure for bariatric and general surgeons.

In his presentation to POHMS, “Developing a Loss Control Culture: Reducing Liability Exposure and Enhancing Your Practice,” Mr. Saxton explained how to minimize professional liability risks through the implementation of newly developed risk management techniques designed to reduce liability while increasing patient satisfaction.

ABOUT JAMES W. SAXTON
Mr. Saxton lectures frequently and is an invited speaker across the country on health care issues, including liability reduction and risk management. In 2005, he presented to nationally prominent health care organizations such as the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the American Brachytherapy Society and the American Health Lawyers Association.

Mr. Saxton is an active trial lawyer – a practice he has sustained for over 25 years – representing providers, including hospitals, physicians and retirement communities, in state and federal court and administrative proceedings. His practice includes litigation, licensing and medical staff issues.
