U.S. Law Firms Benefit as London\'s AIM Reaches Dot-Com Levels
Many U.S. law firms are benefiting as London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM) approaches dot-com levels. AIM, created in 1995 by the London Stock Exchange as a secondary market for small and medium-sized international companies, raised 8.94 billion pounds in 2005 through IPOs, just shy of 2000's record 9.05 billion pounds. The market's lower fees and less onerous regulation compared with the U.S. are prompting more businesses to consider London over New York. U.S. companies and venture capitalists are following their legal advisers to AIM because it costs between 1 million and 2 million pounds less than a NASDAQ Stock Market Inc. listing over a three-year period, and it is quicker and easier than under Sarbanes-Oxley and U.S. securities laws, said Brian McCall, a U.S.-qualified partner working for Dechert LLP in London.

Attorney general seeks advice
Attorney General Troy King is enlisting some uptown legal advice, though he's not saying specifically why he needs it.

""Sometimes attorneys general talk to lawyers they've known for a long time,"" King said after announcing the appointment of revered Montgomery lawyer Maury Smith as a deputy attorney general, specifically ""senior counsel.""

Smith, 79, of the Balch & Bingham law firm, said King approached him about the nonpaying job, and Smith was happy to agree.

""I don't know why he did what he did,"" Smith said Monday.

King and Smith will have confidentiality in dealings, but since Smith still works for Balch & Bingham, the men must be wary of potential conflicts of interest.

""A firm like Balch & Bingham, ... they already have in place their own controls,"" said Sen. Bradley Byrne, R-Fairhope, also a lawyer. He said Alabama is getting a good deal with Smith.

""The state couldn't possibly pay Maury,"" Byrne said.

Smith, a former assistant attorney general and assistant district attorney for Montgomery County, has spent decades in private practice. He said most of his work these days involves counseling corporate clients at Balch & Bingham.

""Free is a lot better than his other clients are getting,"" King said. Smith will be King's ""resource with whom to consult and confer.""

Smith is a past chairman of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce and the Committee of 100; past president of the Montgomery County Bar Association and former chairman of the Criminal Law Section of the Alabama State Bar.

""I don't really know what (King) would ask me to do,"" Smith said, noting that he and King have yet to work together on anything specific.

There's no arrangement as to how much time Smith will spend at the AG's office, but Smith says he's willing to spend whatever time is necessary.

CROATIA HIRES TAMPA LAWYER TO INVESTIGATE CHARGES AGAINST GENERAL
The Republic of Croatia and its retired General Ante
Gotovina have hired Tampa attorney Gregory W. Kehoe to investigate and defend the case
pending against General Gotovina at The Hague.
Mr. Kehoe formerly served in Iraq as the United State’s top legal advisor to the tribunal
now trying Saddam Hussein for war crimes.
In an interview, Mr. Kehoe said he was pleased to be retained by General Gotovina, and he
promised a full airing of the facts regarding the general’s case.
General Gotovina is regarded by many Croats as a war hero for his role for reclaiming
occupied territories for his country, according to the BBC. He is charged with crimes stemming
from a 1995 military operation to reclaim the breakaway region of Serbian Krajina. The Croatian
star of the U.S. television series ER, Goran Visnjic, recently announced he would play Gotovina in
an upcoming film, telling the Associated Press that “Gotovina is a metaphor for today's Croatia.""
Kehoe stated that General Gotovina was not guilty of any wrongdoing. Prosecutors at The
Hague had incorrectly applied international standards to a long-running civil war within Croatia,
Kehoe said.
“The Croatian government was trying to neutralize an insurgent group in its own country,”
Kehoe said. “Certainly this was a legitimate military operation.”
Kehoe said it was hard to know how long a trial could be until prosecutors released more
details about their case. “Will they call 25 witnesses? Will they call 200? That will dictate the
length of the trial.”
Kehoe served as a prosecutor at The Hague between 1995 and 1999, as part of the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Kehoe said the knowledge of the
history and geography of that region that he acquired at that time will be invaluable in his
representation of General Gotovina.
James, Hoyer is an investigative law firm. The firm’s eight full-time investigators work
with experienced attorneys to resolve clients’ problems in cases across the U.S. and around the
globe. Individuals, organizations and governments have hired the firm for its unique fact-gathering
abilities. The firm has a long record of successfully representing consumers, investors and
whistleblowers in fraud cases, and has to date returned more than $2-billion to victims of
wrongdoing.
