Baker & McKenzie Participates in First Pro Bono Project with Public Law Group
Chicago, April 19, 2006 – Baker & McKenzie announced today that a team of more than 30 lawyers from seven North American offices partnered with the Public International Law & Policy Group (PILPG), a non-profit organization that operates as a global pro bono law firm, to provide legal position papers on the upcoming final-status negotiations determining the role and status of Kosovo in the global community. This is the Firm’s first project with PILPG, whose clients nominated it for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Baker & McKenzie team was led by Project Leader Jeff Rosekat (Toronto) and Team Leaders Robert Lewis (New York), Nneka Egbuniwe (Dallas), and Matthew Latella (Toronto).

“We are honored to have worked with PILPG on this project, and we look forward to deepening our relationship with them. We couldn’t be more proud of our talented team and of the difference that their work with PILPG has already made,” said David Hackett, North American Managing Partner.

Kosovo, a region of Serbia in the former Yugoslavia, is considered part of Serbia, but it has been administered by the United Nations as a protectorate since the Kosovo War in 1999. Kosovo is now in final-status negotiations in which it is seeking to become an independent country. Baker & McKenzie advised one of the parties in the negotiations on questions of international law, politics and negotiating strategy. Talks between the region’s opposing factions are currently proceeding.

PILPG, founded in London (1995) and moved to Washington, D.C. (1996), provides legal assistance to developing states involved in conflicts. To date, it has advised more than a dozen countries on the legal aspects of peace negotiations and constitution drafting, and more than 15 countries concerning the protection of human rights, self-determination and the prosecution of war crimes. PILPG draws on the volunteer services of former legal advisers and Foreign Service officers from the US Department of State and other foreign ministries.

In January 2005, a half dozen of PILPG’s pro bono clients nominated the organization for the Nobel Peace Prize for its commitment to providing pro bono legal advice to states and sub-state entities on matters of international and domestic law, including peace negotiations, war crimes tribunals, and constitutional drafting.

“Our involvement in the Kosovo Project is an excellent example of the positive contributions lawyers can make to their communities,” said Angela Vigil, North American Director of Pro Bono and Public Service. “That there were more than 30 lawyers involved from several Baker & McKenzie offices and differing practice areas is a testament to the Firm’s commitment to making a truly global contribution and also to its ability to provide legal services on many levels.

Hedge Fund Activists Go Global
Hedge fund activism in the United States may be ready for export as more U.S.-based hedge funds look to Europe and Asia as venues in which to wield shareholder influence. "Hedge funds are looking for yield, so these countries are attractive," said Timothy Clark, partner in Dechert's alternative investment funds practice. Hedge funds have been relegated to targeting publicly traded companies that provide the most transparency to shareholders. Europe will offer more fertile ground for activist strategies as markets there mature and family-controlled companies become public. Tim has noticed that due to increasing activism more hedge funds are working with investment banks that structure mergers and acquisitions of European companies. Tim points out that the practice is still in its infancy domestically and overseas, and most would say it is removed from the brand of activism employed by large institutional shareholders in the past, which focused on executive pay packages and golden parachutes.
