People\'s Law School at Polk County Courthouse
Anyone interested in learning more about the justice system is invited to attend The People's Law School at the Polk County Courthouse on May 2, 2006. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsors of the event include the Iowa State Bar Association, the Polk County Bar Association, the National Bar Association, The Iowa Trial Lawyers Association, the Iowa Organization of Women Attorneys, Polk County Women Attorneys, the State Public Defender's Office and the Polk County Attorney's Office. Jonathan Winer Testifies on Offshore Banking, Corruption and the War on Terrorism.
Jonathan Winer testified before the House Committee on International Relations' Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations on March 29. Jonathan discussed the role of offshore banks and their relationship to capital flight, money laundering, and other illegal activities, including their support of terrorism. He also discussed how international banks have assisted U.S.-sanctioned countries in circumventing U.S. sanctions regimes. Jonathan is a former Deputy Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for International Law Enforcement.

Barbara T. Sicalides of Pepper Hamilton to Receive Champion of Justice Award from Community Legal Services
Barbara T. Sicalides, a partner with Pepper Hamilton LLP, will be awarded the Champion of Justice award from Community Legal Services, Inc. (CLS). The award will be presented during CLS’ Breakfast of Champions on May 10, 2006 at the Westin Philadelphia.

Ms. Sicalides will be recognized for her dedication and service at the breakfast, which serves as the launch event for CLS’ annual bar campaign, and honors individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to the cause of justice for all. Former Champion of Justice award winners include Senator Arlen Specter, Mayor John Street and the Honorable Chaka Fattah, among others.

Ms. Sicalides is vice-chair of Pepper’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group and head of that group’s Antitrust Section. Her practice covers the full range of commercial litigation, but predominantly focuses on antitrust and securities class action matters.

Active in pro bono and public service work, Ms. Sicalides has received numerous awards recognizing her contributions, including the Philadelphia Bar Association’s First Union Fidelity Award in 2002. She is past president of the board of the Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program, currently chairs the Philadelphia LawWorks steering committee and serves on the executive committee of the Committee of Seventy.

Since its charter was approved in 1966, CLS has provided legal assistance to Philadelphia’s low-income population, with the support of the Philadelphia Bar Association and the legal community. Its mission is to help low-income Philadelphia residents with legal problems by providing advice and representation in civil matters, advocating for their legal rights, and conducting community education about legal issues.

Hunton & Williams Adds Partner to Private Equity Group
Hunton & Williams LLP is pleased
to announce the addition of Gerry L.
Williams to the law firm’s Private Equity
Group of the Global Capital Markets and
Mergers & Acquisitions team. Williams
joins as a partner in the firm’s Atlanta
office. Gerry will team with Joseph B.
Alexander and Dennis L. Zakas, who are
both partners in the firm’s Atlanta office
and members of the Private Equity Group.
Williams’ addition is part of the firm’s
commitment to growing the Private Equity
practice in the Atlanta Office.

Williams joins Hunton & Williams

governance, mergers and acquisitions,
securities and general corporate matters.
Williams has extensive experience in
acquisitions, including representing
a public bank holding company in
the acquisition of a bank holding
company, a public telecommunications
company in the acquisition of a wireless
telecommunications company, a NYSElisted
Fortune 500 company in the sale of
common stock of a public company in the
office furniture manufacturing business,
and a NYSE-listed Fortune 500 company
in the acquisition of its franchises in the
tire retread business.

Karol Corbin Walker, a partner at St. John & Wayne, Newark, was a panelist for a program entitled: “Empowerment & Inspiration 2006: How Women Succeed in Business” in Trenton on April 5. The event, co-sponsored by the Governor’s Project on Entrepreneurship, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners and Prosperity New Jersey, was focused on helping women entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses and connect with public and private resources. Litigation Attorney Joins Syracuse Office
Michael A. Bottar has joined the firm's Syracuse, NY office as an Associate in the Litigation Department. Mr. Bottar has represented foreign and domestic clients in securities and banking litigation, class actions, internal investigations and commercial litigation involving complex issues of contract, tort, and damages. He has experience working with the Securities and Exchange Acts, as well as the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Bank Holding Company Act and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Bottar was a litigation attorney with White & Case LLP, a New York City based law firm with nearly 2000 attorneys worldwide.

Mr. Bottar received his B.A. degree from Colgate University in 2000 and received his law degree, summa cum laude, from Syracuse University College of Law in 2003, where he was a member of the Editorial Staff and an Executive Editor of the Syracuse Law Review, a member and a Competition Co-Director of the Moot Court Honor Society, a member of the Justinian Honorary Law Society and the Order of Barristers, and awarded the Order of the Coif.
