McGuireWoods Lawyers’ Legal Blog Achieves National Recognition
In its April 24, 2006, issue, BusinessWeek magazine recognized the McGuireWoods law blog “suitsintheworkplace.com” created by Rodney A. Satterwhite, a partner in the firm’s Richmond, Va., office, and John J. Michels, Jr., a partner in the firm’s Chicago office. The national magazine said to read the blog was for “edifying quips from employment litigators.”

While this is the first national attention brought to the blog, the lawyers said that up to 1,300 people view each post. Satterwhite and Michels started the blog in 2005, and update it once or twice a week. “We wanted to inject a little humor into what many people might consider a dry subject,” Satterwhite said.

Both partners work in McGuireWoods’ Labor and Employment Department and advise clients on a wide range of employment law issues. Both also focus on legal issues involving technology.

Satterwhite, who also serves as Chief Counsel / Knowledge Management for McGuireWoods, advises clients on the legal issues relating to information systems and technology in the workplace, including issues such as e-mail, Internet access and Internet privacy. He also works with other McGuireWoods partners to advise clients on other issues arising in the technology space including those relating to free speech and First Amendment rights, the use of ""e-signatures"" on documents, domain names and trademarks, patents and copyrights.

Part of Michels’ practice focuses on employment and labor issues surrounding the formation and operation of high-tech companies, particularly in such areas as stock option agreements and entitlements, corporate reorganizations, and employee issues in the electronic workplace.

""I was drawn to the firm's full-service environmental practice which is uniquely strong in both regulatory law and litigation, and the access to top-notch international lawyers in complementing practices."" With regard to the impact of her move on current clients, Ms. Burch continued, ""issues concerning the EU regulatory regime for chemicals, called REACH, will grow materially over the next ten years, and Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's global trade partners in Washington and Brussels can provide my existing clients with assistance on addressing these types of major governmental pressures.""
