Byron Kirkland Selected as a Judge for the Second Annual \"Carolina Challenge\"
On Saturday, April 22, 2006, Byron Kirkland, partner with Triangle-based law firm Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan, LLP participated as a judge for the Second Annual ""Carolina Challenge.""
Students at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC) created the Carolina Challenge to promote entrepreneurship and foster the development of ideas into ventures. With the theme of ""Connect-Create-Launch,"" teams consist of at least two members, one of whom must be a student, faculty member or staff member at UNC. Each team develops a plan that encompasses all aspects of a business including concept, technology, marketing, management, market research, financials and execution. Judges selected for their business knowledge provide constructive feedback and select the winners. This year, the competition awarded $50,000 in total prize money.

Mr. Kirkland practices in the areas of corporate and securities, venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, and technology law. He regularly represents venture funds and diverse companies including public and private entities and start-up, emerging, growth and mature companies. His extensive experience includes public offerings, venture capital financings, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate law matters.

Sachnoff & Weaver Welcomes Kurt A. Winiecki to the Firm

Hon. Lawrence Irving to Join Lerach Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robbins LLP as Special Counsel
Lerach Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robbins LLP (“Lerach Coughlin”) today announced that Hon. Lawrence Irving will become Special Counsel to the firm, effective May 1, 2006. Judge Irving, who previously served as U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of California, will advise the firm’s institutional investor clients regarding securities matters and act as Lerach Coughlin’s liaison with the Regents of the University of California – the lead plaintiff in the Enron securities class action.

“I am very pleased to become Special Counsel to a law firm that has lead the way in representing institutional investors in securities actions in the post-Enron era. I look forward to working with the firm’s institutional clients and the many talented securities lawyers at Lerach Coughlin,” said Judge Irving. “For several decades I served as a Judge and mediator in complex securities cases and look forward to continuing to advise pension funds about their options in large securities matters, including the Enron and AOL Time Warner cases.”

“Judge Irving has recently served as a consultant to The Regents of the University of California and the Office of the General Counsel in the University’s role as lead plaintiff in the Enron case where recoveries to date exceed $7 billion for the members of the plaintiff class,” said James E. Holst, General Counsel of The Regents. “Judge Irving has been of great assistance to us,” Holst continued, “and we are delighted his services and outstanding judgment will continue to be available for the benefit of all plaintiffs in the case, including the University.”

Judge Irving received a B.S. in Business Administration and his LLB from the University of Southern California. For many years, Judge Irving was a leading trial lawyer in San Diego. He was elected a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers and served as President of the San Diego Chapter of ABOTA. Judge Irving was appointed to the Federal Bench by President Regan in 1982. He presided over numerous high-profile criminal and civil trials, including a fivemonth jury trial in the Nucorp securities class action case.

Judge Irving resigned from the Federal Bench in 1990 because of his stance against Guideline and Minimum Mandatory Sentencing Laws. He received numerous awards for his judicial service, including awards from such diverse groups as the FBI and ACLU. Judge Irving has mediated many high-profile cases since 1991, including numerous complex class action securities cases. According to the Los Angeles Daily Journal, Judge Irving is one of the most sought after mediators/arbitrators in California.

Judge Irving’s public service includes serving as chair and a member of numerous Judicial Selection Committees, including as Chair of Gov. Pete Wilson’s San Diego Superior Courts Committee, and Chair of Senator Boxer’s Southern California Federal Judicial and U.S. Attorney Selection Committee, Chair of several San Diego U.S. Magistrate Judicial Selection Committees. He currently serves on President Bush’s Southern California Federal Judicial and U.S. Attorney Selection Committee. Judge Irving will continue to serve as mediator in certain cases and will continue his pro bono activities on behalf of significant causes.

Cynthia Moser Elected to Board of Governors for the ISBA
Cynthia is a newly-elected Judicial District 3B representative for The Iowa State Bar Association Board of Governors.

She was nominated and elected for the six-year term position by fellow attorney ISBA members in Judicial District 3B by ballot vote.

Cynthia has been actively involved in the ISBA since 1977. The ISBA is a voluntary organization of more than 7,900 lawyers and judges who are licensed to practice law in the state.

Bankruptcy Attorney David Softness Joins Buchanan Ingersoll
Bankruptcy lawyer David R. Softness has joined Buchanan Ingersoll PC as a shareholder in its Miami office. He represents individuals, small businesses and large corporations in general creditors' rights and commercial litigation matters.

During his career, Mr. Softness has worked with major banks, including the lead lender in the Chapter 11 of the New Florida Properties Blue and Green Diamond condominiums. He also represented the trustee in the Chapter 11 of the Maison Paco Rabanne condominium in Miami Beach.

The addition of Mr. Softness to Buchanan's Miami office is consistent with the firm's plan to continue its growth in strategic geographic and practice areas. His skills also complement those of the seven tax attorneys and litigators who made the move to Buchanan in the spring of 2005.

Thirty-one Buchanan Ingersoll attorneys have been selected by their peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2007.

Two Buchanan Ingersoll shareholders, Financial Institutions Section Co-Chair Calvin R. Harvey and Tax Section Vice Chair Sherwin P. Simmons, were honored in two categories. Harvey was honored in the Banking and Real Estate Law categories. Simmons was honored in both Tax and Trust and Estates.

Ralph DePalma is Honored at BELS
Ralph DePalma III, Of Counsel to Pryor Cashman Sherman & Flynn LLP was honored by the Brooklyn Entertainment Law Society (BELS) for his ongoing commitment and contribution to the entertainment law community and the students of Brooklyn Law School.
