Stoel Rives LLP Welcomes Three New Attorneys
Stoel Rives LLP, a regional business law firm, is proud to announce Aaron D. Barker, Scott D. Hansen and Samuel E. Webb have joined the firm.

Scott Hansen joins the firm’s litigation group. He represents clients on matters involving products liability, employment, energy, accounting, antitrust, and general commercial litigation. Prior to joining Stoel Rives, Scott was an associate with Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, LLP in Washington, D.C. Scott is a 2001 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center.

Prior to joining Stoel Rives, Samuel Webb worked as intellectual property counsel for NPS Pharmaceuticals in Salt Lake. As an of-counsel with Stoel Rives’ technology and intellectual property group, his practice emphasizes patent preparation and prosecution, management and growth of intellectual property estates, acquisition and licensing of intellectual property rights, and analysis of patent validity and infringement. Sam has experience with a wide range of technologies, though his practice focuses on intellectual property matters relating to pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices. Sam graduated from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law in 1999.

Aaron Barker also joins Stoel Rives’ technology and intellectual property practice group. He focuses his practice on patent preparation and prosecution in the areas of software, semiconductor devices, consumer electronic devices, medical devices and telecommunications. Aaron joins Stoel Rives after spending two years with Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear in Irvine, California. He is a 2003 graduate of the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law.

Attorney Gregory C. Gatto Re-Joins Stoel Rives
Gregory C. Gatto has joined Stoel Rives where he will continue his practice in land use, natural resources and environmental law. Gatto joins Stoel Rives’ Tahoe City office from the San Francisco office of Morrison & Foerster where he was an associate. Prior to that Gatto was at Stoel Rives’ San Francisco office from 2003-2005.

University of San Diego Honors First Woman to Become Luce Forward Partner; Susanne Stanford Receives Alumni Achievement Award
Susanne Stanford, the first woman to become a partner at Luce Forward, will be honored by the University of San Diego Saturday, May 6, 2006.

Stanford, a 1975 magna cum laude graduate of the USD School of Law, will receive the Author E. Hughes Award for Career Achievement.

A trailblazer in the San Diego legal community, Stanford became a partner in 1981 and chaired the firm's family practice for many years. Stanford is now a retired partner and of counsel to the firm. Founded in 1873, Luce Forward is San Diego's oldest and largest locally based law firm with 200 attorneys practicing throughout California.

She is a past president of the Lawyers Club of San Diego and has served on a number of committees for the San Diego County Bar Association including committees to draft a code of ethics and conduct for civil attorneys.

Former Appellate Judge Robert Byer Joins Duane Morris
Duane Morris LLP is pleased to welcome former Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Byer as a partner. Robert will join the firm's expanding Trial Practice Group, and will practice in both the firm's Pittsburgh and Philadelphia offices. Robert was most recently a partner with Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham LLP in Pittsburgh, where he founded and was a leader of that firm's national Appellate Practice Group. He will play a similar role in developing the appellate practice at Duane Morris.

Robert brings to Duane Morris a wealth of appellate and trial experience, as well as experience in strategic corporate counseling. He focuses his practice in appellate work, complex litigation, intellectual property litigation and administrative law. He also advises clients on corporate compliance, corporate governance, crisis management and dispute resolution, and conducts internal investigations for major corporations.

As an appellate lawyer, Robert has briefed or argued more than 120 appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, several other federal appellate circuits, the Pennsylvania appellate courts and the appellate courts of California, Maryland and Washington. He also has briefed and worked on appeals in the United States Supreme Court. His appellate work covers a wide range of legal areas, including corporate governance, intellectual property, administrative agency law, tax cases, Constitutional law, insurance coverage contract cases, professional liability, product liability and toxic torts.

Robert is an elected fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. Other honors include:

appointment to the Lawyers Advisory Committee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit;

designation as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer under Appellate Practice;

During his tenure as a Commonwealth Court Judge from 1990 to 1992, Robert heard appeals and presided over original jurisdiction cases in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Harrisburg, covering a wide range of areas, including environmental; state and local taxation; public employee labor and employment; public utilities; insurance regulation and insolvencies; eminent domain; land use; torts; workers' compensation; and state and local administrative agency law. After his service on the Commonwealth Court, Robert served for four years as a Judge of the Pennsylvania Court of Judicial Discipline. He authored many published opinions as a judge of both courts.

Robert is also an elected member of the prestigious American Law Institute and a former director of the American Judicature Society. He taught courses focusing on appellate review of administrative agency decisions at The National Judicial College and on civil procedure as an adjunct faculty member at Duquesne University School of Law. He is a frequent course planner and faculty member at seminars and continuing legal education programs in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, and has published numerous articles and course materials on appellate advocacy and procedure, civil procedure and in various substantive areas. He served two terms as chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Civil Litigation Section and is an active member of the American Bar Association's Council of Appellate Lawyers, among other bar activities.

Robert earned his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1977, and was Note Editor of the University of Pittsburgh Law Review. He did his post-graduate work at Harris Manchester College at the University of Oxford and received his B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh.

Sears Holdings Assistant General Counsel Returns to Bell, Boyd
Bell, Boyd & Lloyd welcomes David P. Glatz who has rejoined the firm's Corporate Group as a member after serving as Assistant General Counsel - Securities & Governance at Sears Holdings Corporation.

Working both as in-house and outside counsel to numerous publicly-traded companies, Mr. Glatz has become noted as an experienced adviser on corporate governance and compliance programs, securities, and merger and acquisition transactions. During his time at Sears Holdings, he facilitated a $1 billion share repurchase program and handled day-to-day disclosure issues for the company. Previously, as Counsel - Securities & Transactions at SIRVA, Inc., a global relocation services company, he shepherded a $400 million secondary public offering, the $100 million acquisition of a relocation services provider, and the auction sale of the company's European Specialized Transportation business.
