Ashurst boosts international business with two lateral hires in Frankfurt and Dubai
International law firm Ashurst announces today the appointment of Dr Katrin Solmecke and David Wadham as partners in its corporate and energy practices in Frankfurt and Dubai respectively.

Dr. Solmecke, who specialises in M&A transactions, joins from Lovells in Frankfurt and her clients include Morgan Stanley, UBS and Drücker. Dr. Solmecke, a well-known and respected practitioner, has previously been nominated by JUVE, the leading independent German legal newspaper, as one of the top ten rising stars in German M&A.

Dr. Solmecke's appointment increases the number of corporate partners at Ashurst in Germany to nine and the total number of partners in Ashurst Germany to 18. This follows the recent recruitment of David von Saucken, Matt McDonald and Ingo Scholz, as well as the internal promotions of Meiko Zeppenfeld and Nikolaus von Jacobs to our corporate practice in Germany.

David has a broad range of corporate and finance experience in the energy sector with a particular focus on the development and project financing of independent water and power projects (IWPP) in the Middle East. David has worked on a number of landmark deals in terms of Middle East project finance, including:

The Shuweihat IWPP in Abu Dhabi - the first time Islamic finance had been used alongside conventional debt in a Middle East IWPP and the Middle East Economics Digest's 'Project of the Year' in 2002;

The Umm Al Nar IWPP in Abu Dhabi - this involved multiple tranches of conventional and Islamic bank debt. The deal was Project Finance magazine's 'Middle East Power and Water Deal of the Year' in 2003 and was at the time the region's largest IWPP in terms of debt raised;

The Ras Laffan B IWPP in Qatar - a fast track project for the construction of a new power and water plant at Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Ashurst's global energy team comprises around 70 specialist lawyers across the firm. David Wadham's appointment follows that of project finance partners Franco Vigliano and John France in Milan.

Geoffrey Green, senior partner at Ashurst, said:

""Katrin's appointment once again demonstrates our ability to attract top quality partners with our distinct combination of first tier work and excellent working environment. Going forward, we will continue to expand our German practice organically and laterally, as our German business continues to experience strong demand.

We are also delighted to welcome a project finance lawyer of the calibre and experience of David Wadham to the partnership. His appointment reaffirms our commitment to developing and growing our international business, as well as attracting the best talent.
