ABA Tax Section Presents Distinguished Service Award To Fried Frank’s Martin Ginsburg
The American Bar Association Section of Taxation 2006 Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Martin D. Ginsburg, professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center and Of Counsel to the firm Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP in Washington, D.C. The award will be presented during the Section’s 2006 May Meeting, at the plenary breakfast on May 5 in Washington, D.C.

The Distinguished Service Award was established in 1995 and is presented each year in recognition of a lawyer’s exceptional contributions to the tax system and tax bar. This year’s award honors Professor Ginsburg for his outstanding service to the legal profession, the tax system and tax education.

“Marty Ginsburg is an outstanding lawyer and law professor,” said Dennis B. Drapkin, chair of the Section of Taxation. “He exemplifies the best of both the practitioner and teaching professions, and has earned this distinction with grace, intelligence and a wonderful sense of humor.”

“Fried Frank has a long tradition of giving back to the legal community and Marty is a proud example of that tradition,” said Alan Kaden, chairman of Fried Frank’s Washington tax department. “Not only has he played an instrumental role in Fried Frank’s tax practice, but he has also played a vital role in the education of many future lawyers and in the development of tax policy, which is why he is so deserving of such an honor.”

Ginsburg served as the Beekman Professor of Law at Columbia University Law School and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1980 when his wife got a good job there. He joined the tax department at Fried Frank in 1980 and that year began teaching at Georgetown University Law Center. Ginsburg has also taught at New York University School of Law, as an adjunct professor from 1967-79 and visiting professor in 1993; Stanford Law School, visiting professor in 1978; the University of Leiden in Holland in 1982; the Salzburg Seminar in Austria, 1984; Harvard Law School, visiting professor in 1986; and the University of Chicago Law School, visiting professor in 1990. Ginsburg is co-author with Jack Levin of Mergers, Acquisitions, and Buyouts.

Ginsburg is an active member of the Section of Taxation, having served on its Council and as chair of its Committee on Simplification. He has also chaired the Tax Section of the New York State Bar Association and the Committee on Taxation of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Ginsburg has been a member of the Advisory Group to the Commissioner of Internal Revenue and member of the Advisory Group to the Tax Division of the Department of Justice. A Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, Ginsburg is a frequent speaker at tax seminars, and author of many articles on corporate and partnership taxation and business acquisitions.

The American Bar Association Section of Taxation is the national voice of tax lawyers with approximately 18,000 lawyers nationwide. Its goals include helping taxpayers better understand their rights and obligations under the tax laws and working to make the tax system fairer, simpler and easier to administer.

With more than 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law in a democratic society.
