ENGEL REAPPOINTED TO STATE BAR CHARACTER FITNESS COMMITTEE
Albert J. Engel, III, a shareholder at the law firm of Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge, was recently reappointed to the State Bar District C Character and Fitness Committee by the Board of Commissioners. Mr. Engel has served on the committee since 2001.

A Grand Rapids native, Mr. Engel is a graduate of Michigan State University and the University of Toledo Law School. He is a seasoned litigator, licensed in both Michigan and Colorado, and focuses his practice in the areas of physician and institutional medical malpractice defense, health law, and general civil litigation. He is also a frequent lecturer on risk management and malpractice issues.

Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick Welcomes New Columbus Attorney
Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that John D. (Jack) Gillespie has joined the firm, practicing in the Columbus, Ohio office.

Jack joins the firm as a Partner in the Real Estate Practice Group. Jack most recently was a sole practioner in the Columbus area. Previously, Jack was Corporate Counsel with the Office of General Counsel at Nationwide Insurance, and served as the Director of Real Estate Equity Assets at Nationwide Realty Investors.

Jack obtained his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law in 1994 and his undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1991.

Parker Poe’s Ellis R. Lesemann Named to Charleston Regional Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40”

Patrick F. Fischer Sworn In As Cincinnati Bar Association President
Patrick F. Fischer, a partner at Keating Muething & Klekamp PLL (KMK), was sworn in at the Cincinnati Bar Association’s (CBA) Annual Meeting on April 28th as the 114th President.

The CBA, founded in 1872, is an Ohio not-for-profit corporation, the members of which are attorneys principally practicing in Hamilton County, Ohio. Its mission is to maintain the highest professional standards among attorneys, to enhance the professional competence of attorneys, to improve the administration of justice, to serve the needs of members, and to provide law-related service and education to the public.

Mr. Fischer’s legal experience has been primarily centered in the field of securities, ERISA, and other complex commercial litigation, many of which have been class actions. From 1983 to 1984, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable William O. Bertelsman, Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

His involvement in the CBA has been extensive and includes serving as a Trustee, former Secretary and Vice-President, and immediate past Chair of the Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility. He also is the former chair of the Professionalism Committee, the Task Force on Technology, the Academy of Leadership for Lawyers Steering Committee, and the Task Force on Civility. Mr. Fischer is a current member of the Administration and Finance Committee and a former member of the Special Committee on Multi-Disciplinary Practice and the Judicial Candidate Rating Committee.

Mr. Fischer was an inaugural member of the CBA CALL Program and was named an Ohio Super Lawyer by Law & Politics (2004, 2005, 2006). He was recently honored by being named an inaugural Fellow of the ABA’s National Institute for Teaching Ethics and Professionalism in 2005.

Mr. Fischer has previously served as CEO and Chairman of the Board of St. Ursula Villa of Cincinnati, Inc., former President and Founding Trustee of the Cincinnati Children’s Museum and immediate past president of the Pleasant Ridge Community Council. He is an active member of the Hamilton County ADAS Board. He holds an A.B. in history, cum laude, from Harvard College, and earned his law degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

John L. Muething Receives Trustee\'s Award
John L. Muething, co-founder and senior partner of KMK, was honored with the Trustee’s Award at the Cincinnati Bar Association’s (CBA) Annual Meeting on April 28th.

Since its inception in 1989, the Trustees Award is presented to a CBA attorney member or members for outstanding service to the Cincinnati Bar Association, the legal profession and/or the general community. The recipient must display a high level of commitment, dedication or courage. The award recipients are selected by the CBA Awards Committee.

Mr. Muething is held in the highest regard and affection by his partners and the staff of KMK which he co-founded more than 50 years ago. His friends and colleagues at other firms also view him with great admiration and respect.

“I have practiced law with John Muething since February, 1959, and I can say, without reservation, that he has done more to structure me as a lawyer, a person and a contributor to the community. John as been my mentor for the past 47 years and continues to be available to me”, said Donald P. Klekamp, senior partner and co-founder of KMK.

“John has privately affected so many legal lives through his personal counseling, his professionalism, and his trustworthiness. He has never been a seeker of the bright light. His humility shines like no other light as he brought to so many lawyers the essence of what lawyers should be”, wrote Harry H. Santen of Santen & Hughes.

“His contributions to the legal profession and the community of Cincinnati and elsewhere have had a profound impact on many people who have been touched with his warmth, sensitivity, self-sacrifice, care and kindness. John has indeed contributed more to society than he has ever taken out of it”, wrote Robert G. Stachler of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP.

Mr. Muething graduated summa cum laude from Xavier University in 1943 and was a member of the Order of the Coif at the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He served in the U.S. Army in the Far East during 1944-1945. Mr. Muething served as Chairman of the Ohio Board of Bar Examiners (1979, 1980) and chaired and served on various Cincinnati Bar Association committees. He served as Councilman, Vice Mayor and Mayor of Amberley Village from 1975 - 1987. He has voluntarily represented numerous religious and charitable institutions including: the Ursulines of Brown County, the Jesuit Community of Xavier University; St. Xavier High School (1984 – 1995), St. Rita’s School for the Deaf (1986-1995) and he currently serves on the Board of Discover Health. Mr. Muething was also a member of the Cincinnati Board of Education from 1992-1996, serving as president in 1994.

Mr. Muething received the Lifetime Achievement in Law Award from the Cincinnati Bar Foundation in 2003. He received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from Xavier University in 1990 and the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1991 and from Xavier University in 1995.

Mr. Muething was married to Ms. Mildred Fischer for 57 years until her death last December. They have 9 children and 37 grandchildren.

Jackson Kelly PLLC Attorney Stephen R. Crislip Named President of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys
The Association of Defense Trial Attorneys (ADTA) has named Jackson Kelly PLLC attorney Stephen R. Crislip as ADTA President for 2006-2007. Mr. Crislip assumed presidency of the organization during its 65th Annual Meeting at the ADTA Annual Conference at the El Conquistador in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, April 26-30th.

Founded in 1941, the ADTA is a non-profit professional association established to advance the principals of courtroom fairness, justice and fellowship. ADTA invites only one defense trial attorney to be its prime member per one million in population for each city, town, or municipality across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

""It is an honor to be able to serve as head of one of the four cooperative national defense lawyers' groups,"" said Crislip. He previously served as the organization's National Membership Chairman (1998 - 2004) and Vice President (2004 - 2005); and spent the last year as President Elect under immediate past President Daniel R. Formeller of Chicago.



Mr. Crislip is the first attorney practicing in West Virginia to hold this position.



During Crislip's thirty-three year legal career he has served actively on numerous community boards and defense associations. Crislip has served the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia as president and serves on the West Virginia Bar Association's Executive Council. He has served as Chairman of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, the Chairman of the Charleston YMCA, and Chair of the Visiting Committee for the West Virginia University College of Law.



He has been a lecturer for West Virginia CLE and various other bar-related groups. He is the West Virginia chapter author for The Tort Law Desk Reference, a Fifty-State Compendium. In addition he recently authored, A Modern History Of A Law Firm Known As Jackson Kelly, documenting the Firm's 184-year history.



Mr. Crislip is listed in ""The Best Lawyers in America,"" compiled by Woodward/White and graduated from West Virginia University with a B.A. (Political Science /History) and J.D.
