Former Federal Judge Jim Lechner Joins Lerner, David, Littenberg, Krumholz & Mentlik, LLP as Partner
Alfred J. “Jim” Lechner, Jr., a former U.S. District Court Judge for the District of New Jersey, has joined the New Jersey-based intellectual property law firm of Lerner, David, Littenberg, Krumholz & Mentlik, LLP (“Lerner David”) as partner, further expanding the firm’s litigation capabilities, it was announced today.
Lechner comes to Lerner David after a 15-month tenure as Vice President, chief counsel litigation with Tyco International and, most notably, with more than 15 years of experience as a United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey (1986-2001). Prior to his federal appointment at age 38, he served for two years as a Superior Court judge for New Jersey.

Lerner David managing partner William Mentlik cites Lechner’s diverse perspective as especially valuable to the firm’s litigation team: “It’s rare to find someone with such a depth of experience — the legal knowledge and balanced view of a first-rate judge; the strategic focus of a successful trial lawyer; and the organizational and leadership skills necessary to oversee a global corporate litigation portfolio.”

Mentlik continues, “After more than 15 years on the bench and nearly the same amount of time spent appearing before other judges, Jim understands very well that significant trial experience — from jury selection through the return of verdict — is what makes an effective trial lawyer. As a Federal Judge, he expected that attorneys be well prepared, a fact that has certainly contributed to our own high standard of excellence.”

Although not a patent lawyer by trade, Lechner has published 21 intellectual property opinions. His interest in patent and IP law prompted a desire to return to the courtroom as a trial lawyer in this discipline. “I’m energized by the opportunity to work with a firm as respected as Lerner David,” Lechner says. “Their view of intellectual property as integral to a company’s business strategy is right on the mark in today’s knowledge-based global marketplace.”

Lechner holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Xavier University and earned his juris doctor in 1972 from the University of Notre Dame, where he was an editor of Law Review. He was engaged in private trial law practice from 1972-1984, and is a lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

“Jim’s talent and integrity were always clearly evident whenever our team appeared in his courtroom,” says Mentlik. “Working alongside him every day will be an honor — not to mention a considerable benefit to our clients.”

About Lerner, David, Littenberg, Krumholz & Mentlik, LLP

Since its founding in 1969, Lerner David has been devoted exclusively to intellectual property law. The firm has earned a solid reputation for active and effective client representation in the Patent and Trademark Office, in the courts and at the bargaining table — but our role as “counselors” remains paramount. By providing sound, practical advice, Lerner David’s 60+ attorneys across a broad range of industry teams help clients make informed, intelligent choices about the legal, business and other benefits and risks associated with intellectual property.
