Bikus and Belin Join Blackwell Sanders
Christopher M. Bikus and Phillip A. Belin have joined Blackwell Sanders’ Corporate Department in the firm’s Omaha, Neb., office.

Bikus joins Blackwell Sanders as an of counsel and will focus his practice on intellectual property. He returns to Omaha from Tonkon Torp, LLC, Portland, Ore. (2005-2006), where he managed domestic and international trademark matters on behalf of numerous firm clients. In addition, his practice included drafting and negotiating trademark, software and patent license agreements, confidentiality agreements, web hosting and development agreements and joint development agreements. He also conducted intellectual property due diligence in connection with stock and asset purchases. He began his legal career in 1996 as an associate and then partner at McGrath, North, Mullin & Kratz, PC LLO, Omaha, Neb. (1996-2005). Bikus earned a J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law (1996), where he was an executive editor for Nebraska Law Review and a member of Order of the Coif. He received a B.A. from Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill. (1991).

Belin joins Blackwell Sanders as an associate. He will focus his practice in the areas of energy and public utility and commercial transactions. Belin was an associate at Berens & Tate, P.C., L.L.O. (2003-2005), and has experience before the U.S. Court of Appeals of the Fifth Circuit and the National Labor Relations Board. He has assisted in the successful defense of several lawsuits involving discrimination, breach-of-contract, the Fair Labor Standards Act and other employment laws. Belin earned a J.D. from Southern Methodist University School of Law (2003) and an A.B. from Princeton University (2000), where he was a writer and business manager for Princeton University Law Journal.

Mike Forster returns to SPvG
SPvG is pleased to announce that Michael W. Forster has rejoined the firm as a shareholder. Mike is a member of the Business Practice Group and concentrates on representing financial institutions, and in real estate, contract law, general corporate law and commercial law.

His expertise in counseling financial institutions includes regulatory compliance, loan documentation, workouts, and product development. Mike has also participated in drafting banking laws and regulations for the states of Missouri and Illinois including: the Missouri Future Advance Mortgage law, Missouri regulations on loans to limited partnerships, a Missouri statute permitting interstate trust department services, manufactured home lending, and Illinois banking facilities law. He is the author of “Titling Accounts,” published by the Missouri Bankers Association.

Mike also serves closely held companies in real estate transactions, purchases and the sale of businesses, corporate planning, contracts, shareholder relations and counseling business owners.

Experienced Bankruptcy Attorney Joins Nelson Mullins in Atlanta
"Carolyn (Keri) Chayavadhanangkur, an experienced bankruptcy attorney, has joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Atlanta office as an associate. She will practice in the areas of bankruptcy and creditors’ rights, corporate, and securities law.

A native of Atlanta, she is experienced in representing creditors and debtors in complex Chapter 11 bankruptcies, as well as in structuring, negotiating and closing business transactions including senior debt financing facilities for large international corporate and middle market borrowers.

Ms. Chayavadhanangkur is a member of the American Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Association, and the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

She earned a Juris Doctor, with honors, from Emory University School of Law in 2002 where she served as managing editor of the Bankruptcy Developments Journal and was elected to the Order of the Coif. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing/Political Science in 1998 from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.

MOTLEY RICE LAW FIRM RECOGNIZED FOR MARKETING INITIATIVES
Nationally recognized plaintiffs’ firm, Motley Rice LLC, recently received accolades from the South Carolina Public Relations Society of America (SCPRSA) and the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) for several marketing initiatives. The firm was awarded both a Your Honor Award and Mercury Award of Merit for its firm brochure, and a Silver Wing Award of Merit for the firm’s aviation litigation brochure.
The Your Honor Awards is the longest running annual national award program recognizing creativity, effectiveness, quality of execution, return on investment, and overall excellence in legal marketing. Motley Rice was recognized with a first place award for its firm brochure at LMA’s 20th annual conference held in Chicago on March 9, 2006. The firm brochure, produced together with Gil Shuler Graphic Design, was recognized for its bold departure from traditional brochures in both design and content and was praised for awareness of its audience and the equal attention paid to both educational information and firm capabilities.

The South Carolina PRSA Mercury Awards competition is open to anyone in the communications or public relations field in South Carolina. Entries are judged based on purpose, growing scope, research, planning and execution, budget, creativity and goals achieved. Awards were announced at the SCPRSA 2006 Mercury Awards banquet held at the Columbia Museum of Art on April 6, 2006. The firm brochure was presented with a Mercury Award of Merit in the “Marketing Business to Business” category, while the aviation litigation brochure received the Silver Wing Award of Merit in the “Brochures – Fewer than 16 pages” category.

BLB&G Partner Doug McKeige a Panelist on Civil Litigation Issues at ALI-ABA
BLB&G Partner Douglas McKeige served as a panelist at the 31st Annual Advanced American Law Institute & American Bar Association (ALI-ABA) Course of Study program, which was held at the Langham Hotel in Boston. The program covered a variety of topics relating to securities fraud, including the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley, and the evolving role of securities enforcement.

As a member of the “Class Actions, Derivative Suits, Mutual Fund Litigation, and other Civil Proceedings” panel, Mr. McKeige drew upon his extensive experience to discuss various securities litigation topics, such as due diligence defense after WorldCom, the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley and the use of SOX disclosures, and other lead plaintiff/lead counsel issues.

Mr. McKeige specializes in securities fraud class actions, and has successfully prosecuted federal securities class actions, including In re 3Com Corporation Securities Litigation, which resulted in a $259 million settlement, the largest settlement in Ninth Circuit history. Mr. McKeige is also an active member of the National Association of Public Pension Attorneys, the National Council on Teacher Retirement and the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems.

Max Berger Speaks on Globalization and Legal Practice at Columbia Law School
BLB&G partner Max Berger was a panelist at a Columbia University Law School program which took place on April 28, 2006 at the Essex House Hotel in New York City. The panel entitled “Globalization and Legal Practice,” was moderated by Columbia University School of Law Professor John C. Coffee, and featured esteemed Columbia University alumni from the Financial and Legal sector.

Mr. Berger received his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1971. He continues to serve the academic community as a member of both the Dean's Council and the Board of Visitors, the senior alumni advisory groups to the Law School. He currently serves on the Advisory Board of Columbia Law School's Center on Corporate Governance. Additionally, Mr. Berger has taught Profession of Law, an ethics course at Columbia.

Sean Coffey Discusses the Impact of Director Liability on Corporate Governance Reform at ABA Convention
BLB&G Partner Sean Coffey was a speaker at the Spring Meeting of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Business Law, which took place April 6-9, 2006 in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Coffey served on a panel entitled "Director Liability and Its Effect on Corporate Governance Reform," in which he discussed the growing responsibilities of directors in the wake of recent director payouts in securities fraud class actions such as WorldCom.

Mr. Coffey was lead trial counsel for the investor Class in WorldCom, which resulted in a settlement of over $6.15 billion. The WorldCom settlement included a $24.75 million personal payment by the company's former outside directors -- nearly 20% of the collective net worth of these individuals. The director settlement in WorldCom has sparked considerable debate and, according to The Wall Street Journal, has shaken corporate boardrooms across the country.
