DLA Piper Holds First Global Partnership Conference
DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary held its first Global Partner Conference this past weekend in Orlando, Fla., as close to 1000 attendees from more than 30 countries around the world gathered to hear remarks about the global environment, cross-border collaboration and meeting the needs of both local and multinational clients from firm leaders and some of the biggest names in business and public policy, including Dr. Alan Greenspan and Robert Rubin.

The conference began Friday afternoon as Peter Wayte, Senior Partner from the U.K., called the retreat to order to thunderous applause from the audience. Jeff Liss, U.S. Co-Managing Partner, then introduced Senator George J. Mitchell, DLA Piper’s chairman, who greeted a packed room and set the tone by remarking on how dedication and collaboration led to milestone accomplishments in the first 16 months since the firm’s inception. He also articulated the professional values and goals that are critical to the firm’s continued success.

Frank Burch and Lee Miller, Joint CEOs, then presented an opening report that focused on the achievements of the 16 months since the firm was formed by merger; the abiding values of the firm, including its commitment to pro bono and corporate social responsibility; and examples of work undertaken for clients that none of the three firms would have obtained prior to the unprecedented three-way merger in January 2005.

Continuing on the theme of meeting both local and business needs, Terry O'Malley, U.S. Co-Managing Partner, led a panel of CEOs and general counsels from leading companies in a discussion about international business and global challenges. The panelists were:

Robert Iger, President and CEO, The Walt Disney Company
Joe Ryan, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Marriott International, Inc.
Pamela Coles, Group Company Secretary, The Rank Group Plc (U.K.)
A.B. (Buzzy) Krongard, Independent Global Board Member, DLA Piper; Non-executive Chairman of the Board of Directors, PHH Corporation; former Chairman and CEO, Alex. Brown & Co.; and Retired Executive Director to the CIA
Bringing the first day of the conference to an end was Robert Rubin, the former Secretary of the Treasury and current Chairman of the Executive Committee of Citigroup, who offered his reflections on the direction and challenges faced by the U.S. and global economies.

Saturday began with global practice group meetings, followed by a lecture presented by Ashish Nanda, a master professor at the Harvard Business School.

Joint CEO Nigel Knowles then closed the morning session with a stirring presentation that focused on the firm’s vision and values, and the overall strategic plan.

Later that evening, before dinner, the audience was treated to a conversation with Dr. Alan Greenspan, former Chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve, moderated by former Secretary of Defense, William S. Cohen. Secretary Cohen is also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Cohen Group, with which DLA Piper has a strategic affiliation.

Former Secretary General of NATO Lord George Robertson brought the evening and the conference to a close Saturday evening with remarks that were both light and serious, the latter focusing on both global security issues and the progress he believes the NATO nations have made.

""This was an extraordinary bonding experience for all of us,"" said Joint CEO Nigel Knowles. ""We aspire to be the world's leading business law firm, and this weekend will certainly help us get there.""

Joint CEO Frank Burch added, ""the opportunity to get to know one another even better, to discover our common values -- grounded in our clients, our people, and service to our communities -- was invaluable.""

Joint CEO Lee Miller said, ""the opportunity to hear from people like Robert Rubin and Alan Greenspan, to learn from our clients, and to hear Senator Mitchell's articulation of the high values to which we aspire, was unforgettable.""

Other Conference Facts and Editorial Notes:

A large replica of the globe greeted conference attendees and served as a key focal point. The sphere measured 12 feet in diameter and was surrounded by columns that listed the 22 countries where the firm has offices worldwide.
Among the attendees were partners from DLA Piper’s Group Firms and Focus Firms, with whom the firm has exclusive alliances or developed close working relationships, respectively. Group Firms are located in Denmark, Egypt, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Sweden and Zambia. Focus Firms are located in Australia, New Zealand, India, Ireland and Portugal. The firm also has an Affiliate Firm in Saudi Arabia.
The conference was held at Grande Lakes Orlando, which is comprised of two hotels, The Ritz-Carlton and the JW Marriott, both of which are owned and operated by Marriott International, a firm client.
