Scott P. DeVries Re-elected for Seventh Term as Nossaman Managing Partner
Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott LLP today announced the re-election of Scott P. DeVries as the firm’s Managing Partner for a seventh term. Over the past year the firm has gained several strategic lateral partners in line with a move toward expanding and adding depth within core practice areas. In addition the firm has developed a new Associate Development and Compensation program, which among other initiatives, includes further opportunities for pro-bono work. Reinforcing our long-standing commitment to diversity, a Diversity Committee has been created to specifically address and encourage this important area.

“I enjoy leading the firm and am grateful for the opportunity to direct Nossaman’s talented group of attorneys for the seventh year running,” said Nossaman Managing Partner Scott DeVries. “We have made a lot of progress during my tenure, averaging a double digit annual increase per year in the number of attorneys, revenue and per partner profits. And we did this without group acquisitions. Looking forward our focus will be on improving our already high level of client service and better serving the needs of our clients through practice groups. We continue to focus more directly on the industries we serve and further develop our practice groups to more strategically integrate into those industries. The better we understand our clients’ businesses, the better we can serve them.”

In 2005, Mr. DeVries managed both the firm and a substantial litigation practice. This included trying major insurance coverage cases for Aerojet, a GenCorp Company and for Nucor Corporation, in Phoenix; in both cases, our client prevailed. This year is no different, as Mr. DeVries has just this past week finished trying a mass tort case in Sacramento and scheduled for a second trial later this year. Acquisitions are also potential items on the docket for Nossaman in 2006; discussions are underway with two firms. “Scott’s ability to represent several of the firm’s biggest clients while initiating new firmwide policies and considering potential growth opportunities is one of his major contributions as the leader of the Firm,” said Nossaman Partner and Executive Committee member Marco D. Costales.

Over the past year the firm hired four lateral partners; a former federal prosecutor specializing in white-collar crime, former Los Angeles County General Counsel adding strength to the firm’s public agency practice, a Real Estate Partner and a new Employment Partner who heads the Practice Group. Nossaman has also grown the Infrastructure Practice Group and Land Use Practice Group with additional Associate support.

Recommitting to the future of the firm, Associate compensation, development and retention policies have been updated. First year associate salaries now stand at $125,000 with material increases for more senior counterparts. Furthermore, pro-bono work and key business development activities can be used to meet the firm’s billable hours requirement. Associates at the firm have historically been extremely interested in community service and outreach and this policy acknowledges and encourages their participation.

Scott DeVries is a litigation partner in the firm’s San Francisco office. He has more than 20 years of experience representing corporations and public entities in the trial and appeal of complex civil cases, including insurance coverage, environmental, and mass and class toxic torts. In addition, he is a frequent speaker and author on related topics and law firm management. Mr. DeVries earned a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law and B.A. from the College of William and Mary.
