National Publication Honors Five Berger Attorneys As Top Lawyers
Lawdragon, a national legal periodical, has recently honored five Berger & Montague attorneys as tops in their fields.

Three senior attorneys -- Merrill Davidoff, Sherrie Savett, and Peter Nordberg -- have been named among the nation's 500 leading litigators. The editors of Lawdragon recognized Messrs. Davidoff and Nordberg's recent half a billion dollar jury verdict against Dow Chemical Co. and Rockwell International Corp. for property damage claims relating to emissions from the nuclear weapons plant at Rocky Flats, Colorado, and Ms. Savett's impressive record of securities fraud settlements.

Lawdragon also honored two other Berger attorneys, Eric L. Cramer and David Sorensen, as ""New Stars,"" a listing of the top 500 up and coming lawyers in the country, for both of their pioneering work in complex litigation.

""The Lawdragon 500"" are lists of outstanding attorneys as judged by their peers, clients, and researchers of the publication. Over 15,000 lawyers were reviewed for consideration of this prestigious recognition.

David Crichlow Elected Pillsbury’s New York Managing Partner
Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP announced that David A. Crichlow has been elected managing partner of the firm’s New York office. Crichlow, a commercial litigator, has spent his entire 17 year-career with Pillsbury and its predecessor firm Winthrop Stimson Putnam & Roberts.

Crichlow becomes head of a four-member management committee overseeing the approximately 130-attorney New York office, the firm’s largest after San Francisco and Washington, D.C. The other members are James Chudy of the tax department; Kenneth Taber, co-leader of the national litigation practice; and finance partner Jonathan Whitney. Both Chudy and Whitney are new to the committee.

“We welcome our new managing group in New York – the combination of practice talent and leadership embedded in the new committee bodes well for the future of what is obviously one of our most important markets,” said James Rishwain, who recently became Pillsbury’s chair-elect. “It’s especially satisfying to note the elevation of Dave Crichlow, who has given so much of himself to firm matters even while maintaining a full load as one of our most able big-case litigators.”

Crichlow, 42, was elected following the decision by former managing partner Susan Kohlmann to return full time to her intellectual property litigation practice. Crichlow becomes one of the few African American attorneys to gain managing partner status at a national law firm.

This show of support for Crichlow is no surprise to those familiar with his career at the firm. He joined Winthrop Stimson in 1989, immediately after graduation from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Except for a hiatus to take a federal clerkship, he has remained with the firm ever since. He became a partner in 2000 as a member of the final Winthrop Stimson partnership class before its merger with Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro that same year.

In the last several years Crichlow has served as New York hiring partner, firmwide head of the Partner Candidate Evaluation Committee, and co-leader of the National Recruiting Committee.

“Dave’s leadership skills have been evident across the firm for a long time,” Kohlmann said. “He is a gifted litigator who knows how to keep sprawling cases running smoothly, and he commands enormous respect from fellow attorneys and staff alike. It is a reassuring feeling to hand over the management responsibilities of our office to David.”

The New York office had a strong 2005 and recently added several prominent new partners, including Jeffrey Zuckerman, former deputy director for compliance at Morgan Stanley and an ex-SEC enforcement lawyer, along with Ernest Patrikis, who recently joined the firm after serving as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at American International Group. Also this month, Pillsbury was named litigation counsel to the City of New York in initiating a new wave of federal lawsuits brought by Mayor Michael Bloomberg to stop the flow of out-of-state guns into the city. The firm is leading a group of litigators supporting the City on a pro bono basis.

In taking over the helm of the New York office from Kohlmann, Crichlow said, “I certainly have a great act to follow. Susan Kohlmann played a key part in directing the integration effort following Pillsbury’s merger with Shaw Pittman in 2005. More recently, she’s done a tremendous job in helping reassert the practice strengths of our New York office, particularly our finance and bank regulatory work, our litigation and white-collar practice, and our corporate-securities platform -- areas in which we are one of the leaders in the market. I’m looking forward to further building the office from that foundation.”

This month Pillsbury is set to receive special recognition for its dedication and years of commitment to the City Bar Minority Fellowship Program. “As a minority partner I'm especially pleased with our continued dedication to diversity in the legal profession,” Crichlow noted. He added that as part of the Bar Minority Fellowship Program, Pillsbury offers a fellowship to a minority first-year law student intended to provide a jump-start on a legal career.

Crichlow expects to remain active in his litigation and appellate practice even as he assumes management of the New York office. Recently he represented a hedge fund in a complex commercial matter in federal court. He has also represented the Official Committee of Equity Security Holders in one of the largest bankruptcies filed in the Southern District of New York in the past several years, as well as one of the country’s largest oil companies in its litigation against an Enron affiliate. In addition, Crichlow counseled one of the largest auto-industry finance companies in defeating an attempted nationwide class action.

“Given the current professional climate, I think it’s important for attorneys to contribute to the success of their firms, in addition to working to serve their clients,” Crichlow said. “I believe you can be an effective law firm manager as well as an effective practitioner.”

Crichlow is a New York native. He was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Jamaica, Queens, and attended Brooklyn Technical High School. He earned his B.A. from Hofstra University in 1985 before attending law school.

Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP is an international law firm with approximately 900 attorneys in 16 offices, including San Francisco, New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and London.
