Kenneth C. Pickering Named to List of Massachusetts Super Lawyers - Rising Star Edition
Worcester resident Kenneth C. Pickering has been named by the publications Boston magazine and Law & Politics to the list of Massachusetts “Rising Stars” for 2006.

Mr. Pickering is an attorney with the law firm of Mirick O’Connell. He was one of four lawyers from Mirick O’Connell chosen for that prestigious list of top attorneys in the state.

Massachusetts Rising Stars are selected by their peers, and through independent research conducted by the publishers of Law & Politics. The research team evaluates prospective candidates for indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement, including civic service and pro bono activities. Rising Stars must be 40 or younger, or have been practicing law for less than 10 years. Only 2.5 percent of Massachusetts lawyers were named 2006.

Mr. Pickering received his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law, and his B.S. from Dickerson College. B.S. from Northeastern University.

Haynes and Boone Attorney Named to HBA Law Practice Management Panel
Haynes and Boone LLP partner Scot Dixon has been appointed to the governing board of directors for the Houston Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Section, and will assume the post before the group’s next meeting.

Dixon will serve as treasurer for the section, which provides programs and information to lawyers to help them develop and improve the management skills necessary for a successful and ethical law practice.

The programs usually cover topics that law schools do not teach, but which lawyers find they must understand to develop clients and to serve their clients' interests effectively and efficiently.

Dixon, a partner in Haynes and Boone’s Tax, Business and Estate Planning and Corporate/Securities practice groups, is a 1990 graduate of Rice University, and graduated first in his class at the University of Texas School of Law in 1993.

GUERRERO JOINS DEAN MEAD
A. Felipe Guerrero has joined the Orlando office of Dean Mead as an associate in the Commercial Real Estate Department.
Guerrero earned his law degree, Cum Laude, from the University of Florida College of Law, where he was awarded honors in Legal Research & Writing and Appellate Advocacy. He earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Central Florida, where he served as Speaker Chair for the Lead Scholar Program. Guerrero is fluent in Spanish.

Former Smith Moore Partner Earns Distinguished Service Award
Stephen Millikin, recently retired from Smith Moore LLP, has received the highest individual honor given by the Greensboro Bar Association. Millikin was presented the association's Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes members who have ""demonstrated deep devotion and constant commitment to the practice of law, to the administration of justice, to unselfish service to the community, and to the highest ethical standards.""

""Steve's tremendous legal skill, professionalism, tireless work ethic, and positive spirit were inspirational to all Smith Moore attorneys who had the privilege to work with and learn from him over the last half century,"" said Smith Moore managing partner, Steve Earp. Millikin was a civil litigator, and his practice included both commercial and tort litigation. He was a long-time partner with Smith Moore having first started with the firm straight from law school in 1952. Millikin is a member of the Greensboro, North Carolina, and American Bar Associations, and is a retired Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Bell receives invitation to join International Academy of Trial Lawyers
Attorney John W. Bell was recently invited to become a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (IATL), recognized as the most prestigious organization of trial lawyers in the world. Active Academy membership is by invitation only and is strictly limited to 500 U.S. fellows. There are an additional 100 fellows worldwide. Members are engaged in civil and criminal trial practice from both the plaintiff’s and the defendant’s side of the counsel table. Mr. Bell was evaluated by colleagues and judges before whom he had appeared. He joins Johnson & Bell attorney William V. Johnson, a fellow since 1987.

The purpose of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers is to cultivate the science of jurisprudence, promote reforms in the law, facilitate the administration of justice, promote the rule of law internationally, and elevate the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession.

Adkins Joins Weston Hurd
Christopher P. Adkins has joined the Cleveland law firm of Weston Hurd LLP as an associate. He will focus his practice on trust and estate matters including probate law, estate planning and estate administration.

Prior to joining Weston Hurd, Adkins was an attorney with Corsaro & Associates Co., LPA where he focused on estate planning, tax and business matters, and employee benefits.

Adkins received his B.B.A. cum laude in 2000 from Ohio University and his J.D. cum laude in 2005 from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law where he was a managing editor of the Journal of Law and Health. He is a member of the American and Ohio State Bar Associations.
