Pryor Cashman Hosts a Seminar on Tissue Regeneration Without the Use of Embryonic Stem Cells: Advances in the Treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme and Injured Skin
On May 18, 2006, Pryor Cashman Sherman & Flynn LLP presented a stimulating and informative discussion by Dr. David E. Weinstein, CEO and Chief Scientist of GliaMed, Inc. and adjunct professor of pathology at Columbia Medical School and New York Medical College. Dr. Weinstein spoke about the GliaMed's innovative and groundbreaking research on the amplification of cellular regeneration mechanisms to accelerate the restoration of organ systems, work related to the research described on the front page of the "Science Times" section of The New York Times on April 11, 2006. Dr. Weinstein's discussion focused on the treatment of an aggressive primary brain tumor, called glioblastoma multiforme, and on the regeneration of injured skin (including nerves, hair follicles and glands within it).

David E. Weinstein, Ph.D., M.D., is an internationally recognized expert in nerve and tissue regeneration, serving as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization and an external advisor and consultant to the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, the Paralyzed Veterans of America/Spinal Cord Research Foundation and the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He is currently a permanent member of an NIH Study Section for the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke. A long-practicing neuroscientist, Dr. Weinstein recently decided to devote full time to leading GliaMed's drug discovery efforts. Previously, he had been a tenured professor in the departments of Neuroscience, Pathology and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Weinstein holds several granted and in-process patents and has written over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles.

GliaMed, Inc. was formed in September, 2001 to develop and market drugs building on discoveries in Dr. Weinstein's laboratory to use the body's own regenerative capacity to restore diseased or damaged tissue. The Company's technology has resulted in the development of two lead programs. The first is investigating a novel compound for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme. The second is exploring the unique properties of a proprietary small molecule which activates the body's own regenerative machinery.

On May 18, 2006, BLB&G Partner Darnley Stewart moderated a panel on Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation at the New York University (“NYU”) 59th Annual Conference on Labor at NYU Law School. Conference Chaired by WRF Partner Receives Award of Professional Excellence
The Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA) has chosen the conference “Rebuilding after Katrina: A Guide to Business and Personal Insurance Claims and Coverage Issues” to receive its Award of Professional Excellence in the Public Interest category. The 2005 conference was organized and co-chaired by Wiley Rein & Fielding Insurance partner Laura A. Foggan and sponsored by the Practising Law Institute (PLI). Partner Dale E. Hausman also served as a speaker.

Recognizing that, as the Gulf Coast struggles to recover from one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, a working knowledge of insurance coverage is essential to rebuilding businesses, homes and lives, this conference sought to provide necessary legal information to practitioners nationwide. In addition to the attendees present at PLI's conference center in New York, the seminar was telecast via the Internet to more than 100 additional attendees who participated from other locations. The seminar allowed attendees to gain a better understanding of the many difficult personal and commercial lines insurance coverage issues that are presented in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

ACLEA is a non-profit organization with a membership of more than 400 continuing legal education (CLE) professionals. The “ACLEA’s Best” Awards recipients are selected by their peers to recognize outstanding accomplishment in CLE programming. The annual awards will be presented at the group’s annual meeting in July.

Sidley Austin Further Expands London-based Insurance Practice
Sidley Austin today announced the addition of four new insurance lawyers to its newly expanded London-based Insurance team. The addition of these lawyers enhances Sidley’s London-based capabilities in insurance company restructuring and development initiatives.

Led by newly recruited Sidley partner, Nigel Montgomery, the team includes Michelle Kierce, Antony Newman and Helen Jenkinson and combines insurance industry experience with a strong law firm-based track record. The team will focus on insurance restructuring, particularly solvent schemes of arrangement and business transfers, run-off reorganisation, risk transfers for and reconstruction of UK and international insurance and reinsurance companies, and insurance regulation.

Jim Stinson, who co-chairs Sidley’s firm-wide Insurance and Financial Services group commented: “Nigel, Antony, Michelle and Helen have significant experience that will greatly benefit our many insurance clients. The combined depth of this new team will enable our global insurance team to continue to provide cutting edge knowledge and the highest quality legal service to our clients.”

Nigel Montgomery recently joined Sidley Austin and focuses on insurance restructuring and insolvency. He is also a licensed insolvency practitioner and has acted as liquidator, administrative receiver and administrator for a wide variety of companies. He writes and lectures widely on insurance issues, is a member of the International Association of Insurance Receivers and R3 and is a member of the executive committee of the Association of Run-Off Companies.

Michelle Kierce has worked on a broad range of insurance company restructuring and reorganisation issues. She also has experience in relation to schemes of arrangement under section 425 of the Companies Act. Prior to her time at DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, Michelle spent two years at PricewaterhouseCoopers engaged in insurance and corporate insolvency work.

Antony Newman also joins Sidley Austin from DLA Piper Rudnick. Antony has experience in on and off-shore insurer restructuring, insurance portfolio transfers, the regulatory regime impacting upon the insurance industry, mergers, acquisitions and buy-outs within the UK insurance market, as well as the Lloyd's market, where he has earlier worked.

Helen Jenkinson has worked for DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, Barlow Lyde & Gilbert and Clifford Chance. Her past experience includes working with insurance and reinsurance companies on the implementation of solvent schemes of arrangement and advising insolvent insurance companies on the conversion of existing “run-off” schemes of arrangement into closing “cut-off” schemes.

Sidley has top ranked practices in insurance, capital markets, banking and finance and structured products. In 2005, Chambers USA noted clients praised the firm for its “depth of talent,” called it a “potent force in insurance transactions,” and said it was ideal for “heavy lifting” in the “largest and most complex” reinsurance disputes. The Insurance practice was ranked first tier and the Capital Markets practice, also named first tier, was called “the go-to firm across all asset classes.”

Sidley Austin LLP is one of the world's largest full-service law firms, with more than 1,600 lawyers practicing in 15 U.S. and international cities including Beijing, Brussels, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hong Kong, London, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo. Sidley was named the Number One-Ranked U.S. Law Firm for Overall Client Service in 2002 and 2004 in surveys of Fortune 1000 executives by BTI, a Boston-based consulting and research firm. In 2005, BTI named Sidley to their Client Service Hall of Fame as one of only two law firms to rank in the Client Service Top 10 for five years in a row. Sidley received the 2005 Catalyst Award in recognition of the firm's initiative to recruit, retain and advance diverse talent.
