Bracewell Partner Named Houston Bar Association President
Glenn A. Ballard, Jr., trial partner in the Houston office of Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, was named as the new president of the Houston Bar Association serving a one-year term. Ballard succeeded Randall O. Sorrels of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Matthews & Friend at the HBA's Annual Dinner Meeting at River Oaks Country Club on May 18.

Ballard is the seventh attorney from Bracewell to be president of HBA which has more than 11,500 members and the fifth largest metropolitan bar association in the nation.

Ballard, 49, has served on the HBA board of directors since 1999, holding the offices of president-elect, first vice president, treasurer and two terms as a director. He chaired the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program, Inc., which provides legal services to low-income residents of Harris County, and the Harris County Dispute Resolution Center, which provides free mediation services in Houston. Ballard is a past chair of the HBA Litigation Section, as well as past chair of the HBA Fee Dispute Committee, the Member Benefits Committee, and the Administration of Justice Committee.

Ballard’s practice focuses on general civil litigation, with expertise in trade secret and intellectual property disputes, real estate, banking, and oil and gas disputes. He is board certified in civil trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Ballard has also served on Bracewell & Giuliani’s Management Committee and currently serves on the committee managing the firm’s Litigation Section. He is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the Texas Bar Foundation and the Houston Bar Foundation.

Also installed as new HBA officers were W. Thomas (Tommy) Proctor of W. Thomas Proctor, P.C., president-elect; Lynette K. Fons of Beirne, Maynard & Parsons, L.L.P., first vice president; Denise Scofield of Connelly•Baker•Maston•Wotring•Jackson LLP, second vice president; Barrett H. Reasoner of Gibbs & Bruns, L.L.P., secretary; and Travis J. Sales of Baker Botts L.L.P., treasurer. Sorrels will serve on the board as immediate past president.

Intellectual Property Attorney Michael Reed Joins BIOCOM Committee
Intellectual Property attorney Michael P. Reed, Ph.D. , has joined the Medical Technology/Device and Diagnostics Committee for BIOCOM, a premiere life science industry association representing more than 470 member companies in San Diego and Southern California. Reed is an associate in Buchanan Ingersoll's San Diego office.

The Medical Technology/Device and Diagnostics Committee supports outreach to the medical technology sector of the life sciences community in Southern California. Its projects include quarterly events targeting medical technology issues and enhancing potential education opportunities.

BIOCOM focuses on initiatives that positively influence the growth of the life science industry, including capital formation, public policy, workforce development and scientific discovery and development.

Diane Bratvold and Peter Gray, partners in Rider Bennett's Litigation Department, have been elected to serve on the Minnesota State Bar Association's Appellate Section Council. Diane has been elected to serve as Vice Chair and Peter has been elected to a seat on the council. Both attorneys hold highly regarded appellate practices with Rider Bennett.

Active in her profession, Diane brings over 15 years of experience to Rider Bennett's appellate practice group. She has spoken at several Continuing Legal Education Seminars and belongs to the American Bar Association, including the Appellate Practice Committee and the Council of Appellate Lawyers, as well as the Defense Research Institute Appellate Advocacy Committee. Peter joined Rider Bennett following a clerkship with the Honorable Raymond L. Erickson, United States Magistrate Judge, United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.
