Vasaly Named President of Minnesota Women Lawyers
Maslon attorney Mary Vasaly has been named president of Minnesota Women Lawyers. A partner with Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand’s civil litigation and appeals practice areas, Vasaly has served as president-elect of Minnesota Women Lawyers for the past year.

“I’m honored to accept this position,” said Vasaly, who has been a member of the organization for about 20 years. “Minnesota Women Lawyers is a high-energy organization with an important mission: securing the full and equal participation of women in the legal profession and in a just society.” She indicated that among other things, MWL mentors new attorneys, provides professional development for women lawyers, and undertakes social initiatives that assist women in need throughout the state.

Vasaly will offiicially assume her new role on July 1, after speaking at the MWL Annual Meeting, Wednesday, June 7, 2006, 4:30-7:30 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis.

Practicing in the areas of appeals, probate/trust litigation and commercial litigation at Maslon for more than 20 years, Vasaly has appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court, and has tried cases and argued appeals in state and federal courts in Minnesota and other states. She was recently inducted into the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. Last year, she received the Pro Bono Award from the Ramsey County Bar Association for her service to the Children's Law Center of Minnesota. She also is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor granted to only the top one percent of attorneys in each state. Vasaly teaches Appellate Advocacy at the University of St. Thomas Law School and is co-editor of the Eighth Circuit Appellate Practice Manual, now in its third edition, and The Amicus Brief, 2nd ed. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School.

As president of MWL, Vasaly said she has three main initiatives. “First, I intend to highlight the significant contributions of women lawyers in the Minnesota legal community. We have come a long way from the time when MWL began and there were no women judges and few women in private law firms. It is now clear that women lawyers have shattered most of the historic barriers to practice and have become highly successful in all fields of law. Our success should be celebrated,” she said.

“Second, I am committed to expanding and strengthening MWL’s service to our members who are women of color,” she explained. “While women lawyers of color have also been successful in their practices, they are leaving law firms in increasing numbers. We need to address this problem. Third, I will continue MWL’s focus on preserving the independence of Minnesota’s judiciary by educating the public about the role of the judiciary in our system of government. It is important that the public understand that judges must have the freedom to make decisions that protect the rights of the minority even if the decisions are not popular. MWL will also encourage judicial candidates to engage in responsible campaign conduct.”

With a membership of more than 1,200 attorneys, judges, law students and legal employers, MWL was established in 1972. Through programs and initiatives, MWL works to advocate on behalf of women lawyers within the legal profession, and to support social action initiatives to end discrimination in the justice system and promote equality of women in society.

Founded in 1956, Maslon is a 77-attorney commercial law firm based in Minneapolis. Maslon specializes in the areas of business and securities, financial services, bankruptcy, commercial litigation and arbitration, appeals, tax, trusts and estate planning, employee benefits, insurance, labor and employment, intellectual property, real estate and construction law.
