Two Foley & Lardner Attorneys Named Top Women Litigators by Los Angeles Daily Journal
Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Los Angeles litigators Carole Handler and Pamela Johnston have been named 2006 Top Women Litigators by the Los Angeles Daily Journal.

This award recognizes the victories of women attorneys and celebrates the advancements of women in law, according to the Daily Journal, a leading California legal publication. Criteria for selection include litigating a major victory in the last year, setting records in the legal community, playing a prominent role in their practice area, and involvement in the legal community at large.

A leading intellectual property and antitrust litigator, Handler has received this award for the last five consecutive years. She has handled a number of Hollywood's hottest cases, including representing one of the most prominent character-based entertainment companies, Marvel Entertainment, in the protection of its intellectual property. This initiated one of the first copyright infringement cases in the exploding world of online multiplayer gaming on Marvel's behalf. As vice chair of the firm's IP Litigation Practice, Handler focuses her practice on copyright in new media, antitrust, and the interface of antitrust and intellectual property.

“It's no surprise Carole is receiving this award for the fifth time, said Sharon Barner, IP department chair at Foley. “Counseling clients on their complex IP issues, as well as litigating these issues, are key components of our national platform, and Carole's experience in this arena is unparalleled.”

This is the first year Johnston has been named to the Daily Journal's prestigious list of litigators. Prior to joining Foley, she was a federal prosecutor in the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney's Office for 14 years. There she investigated and tried both criminal and civil cases, and she served during her last four years in the office as a deputy chief of the Criminal Division's Major Frauds Section. At Foley, Johnston focuses on the defense of companies and individuals who are the subject of parallel government enforcement actions or white collar criminal proceedings initiated by regulatory and prosecuting agencies for a variety of alleged wrongdoing, including insider trading and other types of securities violations, health care fraud, false claims (Qui Tam), and a variety of different financial or regulatory improprieties. Her experience as both a civil and criminal federal prosecutor also allows her to handle complex parallel proceedings. She twice received the Director's Award from the U.S. Attorney General for superior performance.

“Pam's extensive background as a federal prosecutor makes her uniquely qualified to counsel clients on bet-the-company litigation matters,” said Jon Wilson, litigation department chair at Foley. “Our reputation as a leading trial firm is staked on the strength of attorneys such as Pam, whose dedication to her clients knows no bounds.

We're proud of the high caliber of litigators throughout Foley and value the vital part diverse attorneys play in the firm's overall composition,” added Wilson. “We applaud the Daily Journal for continuing to shine a spotlight on the diverse talent among the ranks of litigators in California.”

Handler and Johnston are two of 75 female litigators being honored by the Daily Journal this year out of the more than 200 nominated. A ceremony and reception was held on May 31 in Los Angeles to honor the recipients.

Foley & Lardner LLP provides the full range of corporate legal counsel. Our attorneys understand today's most complex business issues, including corporate governance, securities enforcement, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property counseling and litigation, outsourcing and information technology, labor and employment, and tax. SEC Regional Trial Counsel Michael Piazza Joins Dorsey & Whitney
The international law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP today announced that Michael A. Piazza has joined the firm as a partner in the firm’s Southern California office. Piazza, most recently regional trial counsel for the Los Angeles office of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will specialize in securities litigation, as well as other commercial and intellectual property litigation matters.

Piazza’s securities litigation expertise is extensive. Most recently, he was the lead SEC trial attorney in the Commission’s civil lawsuit against ex-Gemstar CEO Henry Yuen, which resulted in one of the largest civil penalties ever obtained against an individual. In that case, U.S. District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer found Yuen liable for masterminding a massive accounting fraud at the company, and ordered that he pay $22.3 million for securities law violations. Piazza also was lead SEC trial counsel earlier this year in case against a rogue hedge fund operator. After a four-week jury trial in Dallas, Piazza obtained a verdict against the investment advisor on multiple counts of securities fraud. During his time in the Los Angeles SEC office, Piazza also was lead trial counsel on other major SEC cases.

Piazza also has significant private practice experience. As a partner with Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, he was the nationwide director of venture funding for the technology venture practice group. During his legal career, Piazza has also represented clients in complex securities fraud, patent infringement, and contract litigation cases. Private practice clients have included Qualcomm, Inc., Singapore Technologies, AT&T, Dell Computer Corporation and Bear Stearns Companies, Inc.

Kathlene Lowe, partner-in-charge of the Dorsey Southern California office, said: ""Mike is a superior trial lawyer with a unique combination of high-profile SEC enforcement expertise and patent litigation experience. That diversity, along with extensive trial skills honed in both government and private practice, make him a terrific addition who will benefit Dorsey clients in Southern California and across the firm.""

Piazza received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1987, and his B.A. from Carleton College in 1983.
