Milbank Partner Recognized as the Nation\'s Top Outsourcing Lawyer
John K. Halvey, partner in the international law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP, received Chambers & Partners’ USA “Award for Excellence” for the national Business Process Outsourcing category, distinguishing him as the nation’s leading Outsourcing attorney.

The awards were announced at the Chambers USA dinner held June 1, 2006 in New York City, marking the publication of the fourth edition of CHAMBERS USA: AMERICA’S LEADING LAWYERS FOR BUSINESS 2006. For the first time, Chambers honored the top lawyers in the United States in 19 separate practice areas with the prestigious USA “Award for Excellence.” Only one attorney is recognized as the best in his or her practice specialty nationally for each of the 19 categories. The Awards for Excellence are given to outstanding individuals in numerous categories, and are based on supplemental research obtained from the lawyers and their clients that took into account their work in the past year. The emphasis of the awards is on the current activity of these lawyers.

Separately, Milbank partners Robert Finkel, Debra Alligood White and Stephen Nordahl, and associate Janet Parkhurst were singled out as up-and-coming attorneys to watch in the Outsourcing category. “Clients value the expertise of [Milbank’s Outsourcing] pioneering attorneys and believe the whole team is ‘really plugged into the marketplace,’” according to Chambers & Partners.

Established by Mr. Halvey in 1986, Milbank’s Outsourcing Group has long been recognized as one of the world’s most respected practices, and has been involved in over 325 outsourcing transactions including ITO, BPO and Offshore. Mr. Halvey has successfully integrated Milbank’s burgeoning U.K. and European teams into the Firm’s Outsourcing practice, thereby leveraging its capabilities for more cross-border outsourcing transactions in 2006 and beyond.

For the second year in a row, Chambers researchers conferred the “Star Performer” ranking to Mr. Halvey for the national Business Process Outsourcing category. Star Performer is “reserved for those individuals whose profile is far ahead of the pack,” according to Chambers & Partners researchers.

Milbank also earned a Number 1 firm ranking in National Business Process Outsourcing, and both Mr. Halvey and Milbank are ranked Number 1 in New York: Technology and IT Outsourcing.

Mr. Halvey has been previously recognized as “one of the great outsourcing lawyers, like the grandfather of the industry.” Ten years after Forbes magazine named him “Mr. Outsource,” Mr. Halvey and his team continue to lead the outsourcing market, taking a primary role in significant innovative outsourcing transactions, including hybrid outsourcing and equity-based deals.

Mr. Halvey continues to lead innovations in the Outsourcing field with transactions that include:

the expansion of major financial institutions into BPO as the provider of outsourced financial and administrative services to their clients; a trend exemplified by Mr. Halvey’s client J.P. Morgan Chase in its recent acquisition of the hedge fund administrative and processing businesses of Paloma Partners Management Co;

the increasing role of private equity firms and other investors in the outsourcing arena; and

hybrid technology deals involving an M&A or joint venture component as part of the total outsourcing/BPO relationship.

Mr. Halvey continues his thought leadership in the industry, publishing in 2005 the second edition of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY OUTSOURCING TRANSACTIONS: PROCESS, STRATEGIES AND CONTRACTS, widely recognized as the industry standard treatise on outsourcing. He is currently working on the second edition of the companion guide BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCING TRANSACTIONS: PROCESS, STRATEGIES AND CONTRACTS, considered the definitive work addressing business process outsourcing and related legal matters.
