Two Orrick Lawyers Selected as Top Women Litigators
Two Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe partners were recently named as top women litigators in California by a leading legal publication. The San Francisco and Los Angeles Daily Journals named San Francisco litigation partner Melinda Haag and Silicon Valley employment partner Lynne Hermle to the publication's annual ""Top 75 Women Litigators"" list.

The Daily Journal received more than 200 nominations, and the decision was based on major victories in the past year, leadership, career achievements, and overall contribution to the profession.

Haag was featured for the successful defense of the former chief financial officer of McKesson Corp, who faced securities fraud charges. In what became one of the largest white collar criminal and securities fraud cases ever in the United States, the former CFO, Richard Hawkins was found innocent of any criminal wrongdoing in July 2005. What makes this result so noteworthy is that not only was it a rare defeat for the U.S. Department of Justice in a high-profile criminal case, but the strength of Haag and her team's defense convinced the SEC to voluntarily dismiss a civil action against Hawkins in August 2005, meaning that all governmental action against him had come to an end.

Hermle's reputation as one of the nation's leading employment attorneys has given her the opportunity to litigate a variety of unique and ground-breaking cases. She represented Silicon Valley employers in the earliest California cases to test the exempt status of high-tech employees. She is also one of the only employment litigators – male or female – to have litigated cases testing every one of California's wage and hour exemptions. In one of her recent victories, she scored a complete dismissal and a sanctions award for one of Silicon Valley’s most recognizable tech companies on a multi defendant case that included claims for racial, sexual orientation and perceived disability discrimination as well as defamation and invasion of privacy.

Additionally, in the 2005 guide, Chambers said that Mr. Evanich ""attracts admiration from rivals who hold him to be at the top of his game.""

""I am honored to be recognized by both Chambers & Partners and my peers,"" said Mr. Evanich. ""Of course, I could not have achieved this success if not for the outstanding lawyers at Kirkland & Ellis, and the dedicated team that I work with each day.""

""Attorneys are ranked by the merits outlined by their clients,"" said Fiona Boxall, managing editor of Chambers & Partners. ""The Awards for Excellence are given to outstanding individuals in numerous categories, and are based on supplemental research obtained from the lawyers and their clients that took into account their work in the past year."" Ms. Boxall continued to say, ""Their stars have shown brightly for the last year as they have demonstrated top-tier legal skill and dedication to providing the highest possible level of client service.
