Blackwell Sanders Opens Lincoln Law Office with Three Attorneys
Blackwell Sanders expanded to the Lincoln, Neb., market on June 1, opening an office with three attorneys and three support staff. All three attorneys, formerly with Fennemore Craig, will help launch Blackwell Sanders’ new Natural Resources and Water Law practice group, which will complement the firm’s existing Environmental/Toxic Tort practice group.

“According to Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, water rights will be the number one legal issue in Nebraska over the next 10 years,” said Tom Dahlk, office managing partner of the firm’s Omaha office. “With the addition of these three attorneys to cover this area of growing importance, our Nebraska practice now includes 41 attorneys.” The attorneys will practice from their former location with Fennemore Craig, at 206 South 13th Street, Suite 1400. The phone number for the office will change to 402-458-1500.

Donald G. Blankenau joins Blackwell Sanders as a partner. Blankenau’s practice addresses water, natural resources and environmental issues. He had served as Special Assistant Attorney General to the State of Nebraska in four cases involving water rights conflicts within Nebraska and neighboring states and currently represents the State of Florida in an interstate dispute over allocation of the waters of the Apalichicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. He is noted as one of the Best Lawyers in America in 2006 for Natural Resources Law. Blankenau earned his J.D. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1986; he received his B.S. also from the University of Nebraska in 1983.

Thomas R. Wilmoth joins Blackwell Sanders as a partner. Wilmoth practices in the area of natural resources and water law, with an emphasis on water rights and Endangered Species Act litigation. He represents various clients before administrative and judicial bodies in efforts to comply with federal and state environmental laws, including the Endangered Species Act. He has served as Special Assistant Attorney General to the State of Nebraska in multi-district litigation concerning the flow regime of the Missouri River and currently represents the State of Florida in the Apalichicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River dispute. Wilmoth previously worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior, where he assisted the Bureau of Reclamation in complying with federal environmental laws along the Colorado River. He received his J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School, 1996; he earned his B.A. from Tufts University in 1993.

Jaron Bromm joins the firm as an associate. Bromm practices in the areas of environmental and water law, as well as mining law. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Creighton University School of Law in 2004; he earned his B.S. from Benedictine College, magna cum laude, in 2001.

Betty Murphy Receives Professionalism Award
Betty Southard Murphy, the only woman to serve as Chair of the National Labor Relations Board in the agency’s 70-year history, received the prestigious American Inns of Court Professionalism Award during the Judicial Conference for the District of Columbia Circuit on June 7 at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania. Murphy, a partner in Baker Hostetler's Washington D.C., office, has tried cases or otherwise appeared in federal and state courts in more than 25 states and in 9 of the U.S. Courts of Appeals and the Supreme Court.

Murphy was notified of the Award by Chief Judge Douglas Ginsburg of the D.C. Circuit. Brigadier General David P. Carey (Ret.), Executive Director of the American Inns of Court, stated in a letter: ""The Professionalism Award is intended to honor a lawyer or judge whose life and practice display sterling character and unquestionable integrity, coupled with ongoing dedication to the highest standards of the legal profession and the rule of law. You certainly fit that description.""

Alec Wightman, Executive Partner of the firm, said, “Betty’s receipt of the Professionalism Award is not only an honor for her, but for all of Baker Hostetler as well. The award was presented by Circuit Judge David B. Sentelle. Also present at the awards ceremony were Chief Judge Douglas Ginsburg, Chief Judge Anthony J. Scirica of the Third Circuit and Chief Judge Deanell Reece Tacha of the Tenth Circuit, who is also President of the Board of Trustees of the American Inns of Court. Murphy will also be honored at the American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence dinner, hosted by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, on October 21.

Murphy represents clients both in the U.S. and abroad and has held seven Presidential Appointments including Administrator, Wage-Hour, at the U.S. Department of Labor, and Chair, NLRB. She is active in various bar associations and is a Member of the Board of the American Arbitration Association. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Washington College of Law, American University, and lectures in Europe, Asia and Latin America. She received the U.S. Information Service’s Award for Outstanding Service for her “contributions to international understanding and the foreign policy of the United States.” In 1997, she became the first lawyer in full time private practice elected to the National Academy of Human Resources.

AKIN GUMP EXPANDS PRIVATE EQUITY PRACTICE
David J. D’Urso has joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as a partner in its private equity practice in New York, the firm announced today.

Mr. D’Urso represents private equity sponsors, venture capital investors and their portfolio companies in a wide variety of transactions, including leveraged acquisitions, growth equity investments and corporate financings. In addition, he advises private equity investors in the management of their portfolio companies, including corporate governance matters, management incentive plans, debt and equity financings, follow-on acquisitions, restructurings and liquidity events. He joins the firm from O’Melveny & Myers LLP, where he was a partner.

Mr. D’Urso received his B.A. from Binghamton University, his M.A. from St. John’s University and his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University.

Douglas J. Good Sworn In As 104th President of the Nassau County Bar Association
Ruskin Moscou Faltischek announced today that Douglas J. Good, a senior partner at the firm, was inducted Monday as president of the 6,000 member Nassau County Bar Association. The event was held at Domus, the Mineola home of the Nassau County Bar, on June 5, 2006. Friends, family and dignitaries attended the ceremony and reception. Good was sworn in by the Honorable Lea Ruskin, wife of Melvyn B. Ruskin, one of the founders of Ruskin Moscou Faltischek.

“I am both humbled and proud to assume the presidency of the Nassau County Bar,” noted Good. “I look forward to working with the Officers and Directors of the Nassau County Bar and Academy of Law to further the Association’s programs and goals.”

One of Good’s top priorities is to expand pro bono opportunities. Long involved in pro bono activities, Good served as Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society of Rockland County early in his career. Other initiatives include increasing the ethnic diversity of the association and attracting younger lawyers to the bar group’s ranks.

Good has extensive experience in trial and appellate advocacy in both state and federal courts, as well as substantial experience in alternative dispute resolution. Kamlet Shepherd Hires Three Attorneys to Provide Specialized Expertise for Clients
Kamlet Shepherd, one of Denver’s fastest growing independent law firms, has added three attorneys to serve regional and national clients through their specialty law practices.

Joining the firm are Trygve E. Kjellsen, special counsel in the corporate and securities practice area; Anne T. Kelson, associate in the real estate and project finance group; and Rebecca L. Almon, associate on the regulatory and administrative team focusing primarily on environmental and land use practice.

“The unique strengths of each of these attorneys in their areas of practice will give our corporate, real estate and environmental clients a powerful advantage in their businesses,” said Jay F. Kamlet, co-managing partner.

According to Kamlet, Kjellsen has particular expertise in advising clients in the electronic and financial payments industry, including processors and issuers of stored value cards, both open network and closed network; payroll cards; and the ACH system.

“We have advised clients on the issue and regulation of stored value cards in all 50 states,” he said.

In addition, Kjellsen has particular expertise in public and private mergers and acquisitions; financing and securities; and emerging growth and technology. Prior to joining Kamlet Shepherd, Kjellsen was counsel with First Data Corporation in the prepaid solutions business where he was responsible for negotiating and drafting processing agreements for prepaid cards and advising on regulatory issues. He has a juris doctor degree from Rutgers University School of Law.

Kelson concentrates on commercial real estate transactions, as well as real estate financing. She has negotiated and drafted commercial leases on behalf of landlords and tenants and has represented many local and national lenders, developers and borrowers in complex commercial loans, sales and workouts.

“She brings significant experience to our firm on land conservation techniques, having served for over a decade as lead attorney for the nationally-renowned Jefferson County Open Space program,” Kamlet said.

Kelson graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law with a juris doctor degree.

Focusing on the environment and land use practice, Almon has extensive experience in environmental enforcement, land use policy and environmental coverage issues. Prior to joining Kamlet Shepherd she served as Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental Enforcement Division of the Illinois Attorney General’s office where she prosecuted civil cases relating to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act. In addition, she has interpreted complex environmental issues as they relate to environmental insurance coverage.

Almon received her juris doctor degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law, completing the Environmental and Energy Law Program.
