Mintz Levin Opens San Diego Office
Marking its second major West Coast move in as many months, Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. - a full-service, 450-lawyer AmLaw 100 firm with offices throughout the U.S. and in the U.K. - announced it will open an office in San Diego, California.

A group of attorneys from Fish & Richardson - including the head of Fish's corporate and securities practice as well as the managing partner of its San Diego office - will join Mintz Levin to anchor the new location, further expanding the firm's corporate and securities, intellectual property, litigation and employment law practices.

The move comes on the heels of Mintz Levin's acquisition of the Reed Intellectual Property Law Group and the opening of a Palo Alto office, which marked the firm's first significant expansion to the West Coast and deepened already significant experience and expertise in the intellectual property and life sciences areas.

Joining Mintz Levin from Fish & Richardson as Members are: Eddie Wang Rodriguez, the head of the corporate and securities group at Fish & Richardson, Craig Hunsaker, the managing partner of Fish and Richardson's San Diego office, Lance Kurata, James Cleary, Carl Kukkonen and Of Counsel, Jeremy Hayden.

Also joining Mintz Levin's San Diego office from Fish & Richardson are several associates and Marketing Director David Salisbury.

Mr. Rodriguez' practice focuses on corporate and securities matters, including mergers and acquisitions, venture financing and technology licensing and other transactional activities. He has represented clients in more than 200 mergers and acquisitions and numerous securities offerings in a wide range of industries.

Mr. Hunsaker has an extensive background representing clients in employment litigation and counseling, with a particular emphasis on trade secret and employee mobility issues. He has significant experience in cases involving the protection of proprietary information, non-compete agreements, claims of sexual harassment, gender, race, age and disability discrimination and wrongful termination. Mr. Hunsaker also regularly advises clients on personnel policies, wage/hour laws, EEOC compliance, mergers and acquisitions due diligence, strategic hiring, disciplining and firing employees, executive employment agreements, and reductions in force.

Mr. Kurata's practice focuses on intellectual property and technology licensing, strategic alliances and joint ventures. Over the course of his career, he has advised scores of companies - from public corporations to emerging growth companies - in industries including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, software, hardware, telecommunications and electronic commerce.

Mr. Cleary has significant experience in patent law, including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, rendering of opinions on infringement and validity, licensing and due diligence investigations. He has represented clients in numerous industries, with a particular focus on electrical, software and medical technologies. Earlier in his career, Mr. Cleary was a senior test engineer for the United States Air Force Defense Dissemination Program.

Mr. Kukkonen represents clients in connection with patent prosecution, licensing, technology transfer and other transactional work. He has particular experience working with companies involved in Internet-based applications, nanotechnology, optical devices, software and telecommunications. Mr. Kukkonen also brings extensive experience in international intellectual property issues, having previously served as international counsel for a European intellectual property law firm.

Mr. Hayden's practice focuses on corporate and securities issues, including public and private equity offerings, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, technology assignment and licensing transactions, corporate structuring and regulatory compliance.

One of the most active major law firms in the intellectual property and life science areas, Mintz Levin has more than 90 attorneys, scientists and other professionals focused on the protection, licensing and enforcement of intellectual property rights. The firm's San Diego office is located temporarily at 9255 Towne Centre Drive. The permanent office will be in the new Paseo del Mar complex which is expected to be completed in 2007.

Goodwin Procter Attorney Wins 2006 Burton Award for Legal Achievement
Goodwin Procter LLP today announced that Alyssa A. Grikscheit, partner in the firm’s Business Law Department, has been selected to receive the prestigious Burton Award for Legal Achievement, which honors excellence in legal writing.

Grikscheit won this award for an article she wrote for Latin American Law & Business Report last June called “Private Equity in Latin America: Strategies for Success.” The article discusses the renewed interest in private equity investing in Latin America, as well as strategies and factors that should be considered when investing in this market.

Based in New York, Grikscheit has extensive experience in private equity, mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances, restructurings, securities law, licensing and general corporate law. She has particular expertise in international transactions involving Latin America and Europe.

The Burton Awards are dedicated to the refinement and enrichment of writing in the legal profession. The program honors lawyers and law students who write clearly, concisely and precisely. The submissions, nominated by managing partners of law firms and law school deans, include articles published over the past year. The program this year selected only 30 recipients of the award from submissions received from the 1000 largest law firms in the country.

Fulbright Associate Appointed to State Bar Grievance Committee
Fulbright associate Baiju Vasani was recently appointed to the District 4 Grievance Committee of the State Bar of Texas by Eduardo Roberto Rodriguez, the Texas State Bar President. Baiju Vasani Associate HoustonVasani’s term commences July 1, 2006, and will run for three years. State Bar Grievance Committees are comprised of lawyers and certain members of the public to hear complaints and decide appropriate disciplinary action against members of the legal profession arising out of alleged breaches of ethical standards and codes of practice.
Vasani focuses his practice exclusively on international commercial and investment arbitration and complex transnational litigation matters covering various sectors and industries. Prior to joining Fulbright, he was in-house legal counsel for a Fortune 500 company, involved in both contentious and transactional matters in connection with the company's United Kingdom and European operations. Vasani is admitted to practice as an attorney in Texas and as a solicitor in England, holding law degrees in both countries. He has been admitted in England since 1999 and Texas since 2003.

Fulbright’s Charles W. Hall Receives Outstanding Texas Tax Lawyer Award
Last Friday, the Tax Section of the State Bar of Texas presented Fulbright’s Charles Hall with its Outstanding Texas Tax Lawyer Award, recognizing his lifetime achievement in the practice of tax law. Hall was honored at the 22nd Annual Texas Federal Tax Institute luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort in San Antonio.
Hall enjoys a reputation for expertise and professionalism within the national tax community, as well as a recognized commitment to the highest standards of integrity and ethics in practice. During his 52-year career, he served as Chair of the Section of Tax of the American Bar Association, Chair of the Tax Section of the State Bar of Texas, Regent of the American College of Tax Counsel, and Member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association.
Hall has also served for more than 18 years as a Trustee of the M.D. Anderson Foundation and for more than 15 years as a Director of the Texas Medical Center.
Hall earned his LL.M. in Taxation from SMU in 1959, his J.D. from SMU School of Law in 1954 and his B.A. in Mathematics from University of the South in 1951. His career with Fulbright spans 49 years and counting.

Michele Adelman Joins Foley Hoag as Counsel in Litigation Department and Business Crimes and Government Investigation Practice Group
Foley Hoag LLP, a business law firm of 250 attorneys with offices in Boston and Washington, D.C., today announced the addition of Michele L. Adelman as Counsel to the firm's Litigation Department and Business Crimes and Government Investigations Practice Group.

Prior to joining Foley Hoag, Ms. Adelman was Deputy Chief of the Criminal Bureau at the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, where she prosecuted complex cases in the areas of corruption and economic crime. In that role, Ms. Adelman also led the grand jury investigation of the Boston Archdiocese relating to allegations of sexual abuse of children. Hirsch joins Ropes & Gray\'s Investment Management Group
Ropes & Gray is pleased to announce that Daniel O. Hirsch joined the firm's investment-management group as a partner on June 12, basing his practice in its office in Washington, D.C.

At Ropes & Gray, Hirsch will advise investment companies and their boards and investment advisers. In that capacity, he will draw on his experience both as a staff member of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and as a managing director of the legal department of Deutsche Asset Management.

""It is rare to find an attorney such as Dan who has both extensive SEC credentials and industry experience,"" said Gregory D. Sheehan, the chair of Ropes & Gray's Investment Management Group. During his 16-year term at the SEC, Hirsch served as a branch chief in the Division of Enforcement and as counsel to Commissioner Mary L. Schapiro, advising her on rulemaking, capital-market oversight, and enforcement investigations, among other matters. He was also counsel to the SEC's Task Force on Administrative Proceedings, earning a Special Achievement Award for his service. In his final position at the SEC, Hirsch served as assistant general counsel for legal and regulatory policy, supervising a team of attorneys that advised the SEC on issues involving the regulation of investment companies and advisors and enforcement investigations.

In 1998 Hirsch joined Deutsche Asset Management as head of the company's mutual funds services legal department. Subsequently, as a managing director in the Deutsche Asset Management legal department, Hirsch managed a team of approximately 13 lawyers and 55 paralegals, disclosure specialists and support staff responsible for the legal and regulatory services for a mutual funds complex with about $120 billion in assets.

Hirsch earned his undergraduate degree magna cum laude at Clark University and his law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School. Subsequently, he served as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge R.H. Hall in Atlanta, Ga.
