Certilman Balin Expands Environmental Practice Group: John Wagner Joins as Partner
Certilman Balin has announced that John M. Wagner has joined the Environmental Practice Group as a Partner. He will be based in the Hauppauge office.

Mr. Wagner brings 20 years of real property law to the firm. He represents private and municipal clients from individual landowners to multi-state development companies in zoning, land use, environmental law matters, and in particular, cases involving environmental review of zoning and land use actions pursuant to the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (“SEQRA”) and related constitutional issues. His practice also encompasses such matters as subdivision, variance, special permit, water supply/sewerage, highway work permit, wetlands and zoning change applications.

Well-versed in Long Island real estate and environmental issues, his practice spans the five “East End” towns of Suffolk County, the Towns of Hempstead, Brookhaven and Islip, and several villages in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties. Additionally, Mr. Wagner has served as special counsel to the Village of Greenport Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals and as counsel to the Planning Board of the Town of Shelter Island.

Mr. Wagner has been involved in several cutting-edge cases involving real property and environmental issues, including, for example, the Long Island Pine Barrens Society litigation that preceded adoption of the New York State “Long Island Pine Barrens Protection Act.”

He earned his undergraduate degree in English (with distinction) from Vassar College and his Juris Doctor from The American University, Washington College of Law. A member of the Suffolk County Bar Association, Mr. Wagner is admitted to practice in the states of New York and New Jersey; U.S. District Court/District of New Jersey; U.S. District Court/Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; U.S. Court of Federal Claims; and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a resident of Wading River.

Wiley Rein & Fielding Attorney Selected as Supreme Court Clerk
Wiley Rein & Fielding is pleased to announce that William S. Consovoy, an associate in the firm’s Communications and Appellate Practices, has been chosen to serve as a law clerk to Associate Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court. With his selection, Mr. Consovoy joins a distinguished cadre of WRF litigators that includes six former U.S. Supreme Court clerks and more than 40 attorneys who have served as clerks in federal and state courts across the country.

Prior to joining WRF, Mr. Consovoy clerked on the Arlington Circuit Court and for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Currently he counsels clients on federal regulatory issues, including compliance with the Cable Act, Telecommunications Act and the Copyright Act. Mr. Consovoy also litigates complex federal jurisdiction, preemption and state law issues raised in ongoing state and federal litigation and appeals.

Mr. Consovoy will begin his clerkship with the start of either the 2007 or 2008 Supreme Court term.

Thelen Reid Receives Top Rankings in 2006 Chambers USA
Thelen Reid & Priest LLP and 19 of its partners have been recognized by clients and peers for leadership and excellence in the legal field in the newly-published fourth annual Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.

Sonnenschein Adds Litigator Blaine C. Kimrey in Chicago
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced that Blaine C. Kimrey has joined the law firm as a partner in its Chicago office and a member of the national Litigation and Business Regulation Group. He will focus on media, entertainment, Internet, intellectual property and commercial litigation matters.

“Blaine is one of the best young litigators in the city,” said Robert C. Johnson, chair of Sonnenschein’s Litigation and Business Regulation Group. “His depth of experience, particularly in the media defense bar, will be invaluable to our clients in Chicago and across the country.”

Kimrey represents media clients in matters ranging from defamation and invasion of privacy to those related to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. His Internet litigation experience includes defamation, invasion of privacy, copyright, trademark, digital discovery and other issues. He also provides pre-publication and pre-broadcast review on such issues as defamation, invasion of privacy, trade secret protection, trademarks and copyright, and drafts and negotiates Web development, licensing and other technology agreements.

Kimrey is a vice chair of the ABA Tort, Trial and Insurance Practice Section’s Media, Privacy and Defamation Law Committee and chair of the Committee’s Insurance Task Force. From 2000 to 2003, he served as chair of the Missouri Bar Media Law Committee and was vice chair of the Kansas City Media and the Law Seminar in 2003. He performs pro bono work on behalf of media entities and indigent criminal defendants.

In addition to being a former journalist at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and the Austin American-Statesman, Kimrey is the author of numerous media-related legal articles. His most recent speaking engagements include “Blogging and Gripe Sites: Balancing the Law and Public Relations,” which he presented at the Hot Issues in Technology, the Internet, and e-Commerce 2006 conferences in San Francisco and Palo Alto, Calif.

Kimrey received a J.D. degree, with honors, from the University of Texas School of Law, where he won the Award for Highest Achievement in Mass Communications and the Albert P. Jones Presidential Scholarship for Excellence in Oral Advocacy, was chief articles editor of The Review of Litigation, and was inducted into the Order of Barristers. He earned a B.S. degree, Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Tau Alpha, in journalism from the University of Kansas. Most recently, he was an associate with Winston & Strawn LLP in Chicago.

SCHIFF HARDIN LLP WELCOMES TAMERA M. WOODARD AS AN ASSOCIATE IN THE ATLANTA OFFICE
Schiff Hardin LLP has added Tamera M. Woodard as an associate in the Labor and Employment Group in the Atlanta office. She joins Schiff Hardin from Seyfarth Shaw LLP (Atlanta), where she was a labor and employment associate.

Ms. Woodard concentrates her practice in labor and employment law. She also conducts anti-harassment and discrimination training for employees and management, and has experience reviewing and advising clients on employee handbooks and related employment policies.

Ms. Woodard has extensive experience representing management in all facets of labor and employment relationships. She litigates employment and labor claims in federal and state courts, as well as before government agencies. She also represents employers in arbitrations, mediations and collective bargaining negotiations.

In addition, she serves as a Guardian Ad Litem in the Fulton County Superior Court.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Woodard was a worker's compensation specialist for a major insurance company and a military service representative for one of the largest shipping companies in the world.

She is a member of the National Bar Association, Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (Co-Chair, Legal Education Committee), Atlanta Bar Association (Young Lawyers Division and Labor and Employment Section) and Michigan Bar Association (Young Lawyers Division)

Ms. Woodard received her undergraduate degree (B.A., English and African American Studies, 1995) from the University of Michigan, and also as an undergraduate she participated in the Study Abroad Program at the University of the West Indies - Kingston, Jamaica. She received her law degree (J.D., 2003) from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was Contributing and Associate Editor of the Michigan Law Review and Associate Editor Invitee for the Michigan Journal of Race and Law. During law school, Ms. Woodard served as a student attorney for the Legal Assistance for Urban Communities program.

Ms. Woodard is admitted to practice in Georgia and Michigan, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

Patton Boggs LLP Announces Significant Leadership Changes
Patton Boggs LLP recently announced a series of significant leadership changes designed to continue its growth and progress toward becoming one of the world’s leading international firms. The changes were announced at the firm’s recent Annual Meeting of the Partnership and affect management posts in Washington DC, in several regional offices and within the Patton Boggs’ major practice departments and committees.

“These strategic moves demonstrate a commitment to build on our base as the preeminent public policy firm by continuously strengthening capabilities in litigation and business law. In addition, we were pleased that some of these posts went to younger attorneys who have moved up within the firm to assume leadership roles,” noted Stuart Pape, Managing Partner.

The new leadership in the practice departments include: the bipartisan pairing of two partners, Benjamin Ginsberg and Nicholas Allard to lead the firm’s Public Policy, Administrative and Regulatory Department. Mr. Ginsberg, a renowned election law expert, leading Republican strategist and counsel for both Bush/Cheney election campaigns will serve as Co-Chair with Nicholas Allard. Mr. Allard is a noted Telecommunications and Health policy specialist who brings significant political and legislative experience as the former Administrative Assistant and Chief of Staff to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and as legal counsel to Senator Edward Kennedy on the Senate Judiciary Committee. This paring of Democrat Allard and Republican Ginsberg is expected to enhance the firm’s profile in all policy areas at the federal and state levels. Darryl Nirenberg will serve as the Deputy Chair of the department.

Robert Luskin, who currently represents White House Senior Advisor Karl Rove in the C.I.A. leak probe, and Mitchell Berger will Co-Chair the Litigation Department. Mr. Luskin possesses extensive experience defending cases involving allegations of official corruption having formerly served as Special Counsel to the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of the U.S. Department of Justice. Scott Chambers, a partner based in the Northern Virginia office, will Chair the Intellectual Property Department with Dallas partner Gerald Welch serving as Deputy Chair.

The newly announced administrative leadership posts include the naming of Washington DC partner Edward Newberry and Dallas partner Charles Miller to both be Deputy Managing Partners of the firm. They will assist Managing Partner Stuart Pape with various strategic initiatives relating to practice group administration and business development.

Douglas Boggs moves from Washington DC to serve as Managing Partner of the Northern Virginia Office. Stanley Mayo will be Managing Partner of the Dallas office.

Rounding out Patton Boggs’ current office leadership posts are: Mark Savit, who has been serving as Managing Partner in the firm’s Denver office for several months, and Robert Hager, who assumed the Managing Partner role in the Doha, Qatar office a few weeks ago. Douglas Serdahely will remain as Managing Partner of the Anchorage office.

The announcements follow the April launch of Patton Boggs’ two new offices in New Jersey and New York. During the launch, the firm revealed that James Tyrrell had been named Managing Partner of the Greater New York/New Jersey Offices. Mr. Tyrrell is assisted by John McGahren, who is Managing Partner of the New Jersey Office, and partner Nick Simeonidis, who is providing administrative support to both the New York and New Jersey offices.

In addition, Washington DC partners Sally Garr and Denise Vanison join Dallas partner Cheryl Jerome Moore as new at-large members of the firm’s Management Committee. James Tyrrell has also been named to the firm’s Executive Committee.
