Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione’s Jerome Gilson Receives Prestigious 2006 Burton Award for Legal Achievement
Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., is pleased to announce that shareholder, Jerome Gilson, and co-author, Anne Gilson LaLonde, are recipients of the 2006 Burton Award for Excellence in Legal Achievement in the law firm category for their article, Cinnamon Buns, Marching Ducks and Cherry-Scented Racecar Exhaust: Protecting Nontraditional Trademarks, which was published in the July/August 2005 issue of The Trademark Reporter, Volume 95, Number 4 (Matthew Bender & Company). This is an impressive third consecutive time that Mr. Gilson and Ms. LaLonde have won this notable award for excellence in legal writing.

Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione is also receiving the William C. Burton Record of Distinction Award. This award recognizes the accomplishment of three consecutive wins by attorneys at a law firm as a direct reflection of the highest quality of legal writing at the firm. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on June 12, which will be held in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

Mr. Gilson’s career in trademark and unfair competition law has spanned four decades. He is admitted to practice law before eight federal Courts of Appeals and before the U.S. Supreme Court. He has handled numerous trials and appeals before the federal courts and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, as well as provided counsel to a cross section of the country’s largest and most prominent corporations and famous brand names. Since 1999, Mr. Gilson and Ms. Gilson LaLonde, an attorney and his daughter, have produced several prominent written works in trademark law, including the 2004 Burton Award-winning, The Lanham Act: Time for a Face-Lift and The Madrid Protocol: Trademark Superhero? They are also the authors of the highly respected, oft-cited treatise, Trademark Protection and Practice (Matthew Bender & Co.), a supplemented 11-volume standard reference work, which provides a comprehensive coverage of trademark law.

""We are proud of our partner Jerry Gilson and congratulate him on this significant achievement,” said Brinks president Gary M. Ropski. “His contributions to the field of trademark law and to our firm are truly outstanding. This exceptional recognition is another highlight of his extraordinary career.”

Now in its seventh year, this national industry award program, which is run in conjunction with the Library of Congress and its Law Library, annually acknowledges and rewards concise and effective legal writing by partners in law firms and by law students. Founded by lawyer and author, William C. Burton, the Burton Foundation, is a nonprofit, cultural and academic organization. The Foundation and The Burton Awards for Legal Achievement are devoted to further promoting the stature of the legal profession.

The Burton Awards Program receives nominations from managing partners of the nation’s 1,000 largest law firms and from professors at academic institutions, representing every geographic region in the U.S. This year, of all the submissions received, there were only 30 awards presented. More information about The Burton Awards can be found at www.burtonawards.com.

Chadbourne & Parke LLP Names Partner Phoebe A. Wilkinson as New Pro Bono Committee Chair
The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP announced today that partner and Pro Bono Committee member Phoebe A. Wilkinson has been named Chair of the Committee. Ms. Wilkinson will succeed partner Bernard W. McCarthy, who is retiring as a partner at the end of June.

Ms. Wilkinson has been a member of Chadbourne’s Pro Bono Committee since 1996. For several years she served as Chadbourne's solicitor for the Legal Aid Society Associates' Campaign, setting records for contributions in each of the years she ran Chadbourne's internal campaign. Ms. Wilkinson also served as the City-wide chair of the 1999-2000 Campaign. Ms. Wilkinson presently serves on the Board of Directors of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Inc.

""Phoebe's experience running the Legal Aid Associate's Campaign on a City-wide basis, and her service on the Board of NYLPI, gives her a knowledge of what other firms are doing in the pro bono area and of some of the key players. This will be very helpful in maintaining the excellent reputation our Pro Bono program has achieved outside the Firm,"" said Mr. McCarthy, who will be staying on in an advisory capacity until the end of 2006. ""I'm sure that as Chair, Phoebe will bring her many talents to the task of overseeing and improving the Firm's Pro Bono program. I very much look forward to working with her during the next several months to help to ensure a smooth transition.""

Ms. Wilkinson is a partner in Chadbourne's litigation department. She joined Chadbourne as an associate in 1993, upon graduation from law school. Her practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, products liability and class action defense. Ms. Wilkinson earned her undergraduate degree from Brown University in 1988 and her law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1993.

Mr. McCarthy has been the Pro Bono Partner of Chadbourne since February 1999. As such, he has devoted a significant portion of his time at the Firm to structuring and managing its pro bono practice. He became the Chair of the Pro Bono Committee in July 1996 and has served as a member of that committee since the late 1970s.

An experienced litigator, Mr. McCarthy concentrated his practice for many years in the employment law area. He represented corporate clients throughout the country in both state and federal proceedings at the trial and appellate levels and lectured frequently on emerging employment law issues. In recent years, Mr. McCarthy has been active in assisting associates in trying pro bono cases and also has been engaged in product liability work.

Mr. McCarthy is a trained mediator on the panels of the Commercial Division, New York State Supreme Court, and of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.

In keeping with Chadbourne’s recent global expansion, the 17-member Pro Bono Committee also recently named two new members -- Alexander Kalinov, a counsel in the St. Petersburg office and the office’s first representative on the Pro Bono Committee, and Anna Kelina, an associate in the Moscow office.
