Breton A. Bocchieri Joins Thelen Reid’s Los Angeles Office
Thelen Reid & Priest LLP announced today that well-known intellectual property attorney Breton (Bret) A. Bocchieri has joined the firm as a partner in the Los Angeles office. Mr. Bocchieri joins Thelen Reid from Perkins Coie, where he was a partner in the intellectual property litigation practice in Santa Monica.

Mr. Bocchieri is widely recognized for his work on complex patent matters and his emphasis on technology-driven litigation. His practice also focuses on trademark, copyright, cyber-piracy, trade secret, and related antitrust litigation. With extensive experience as lead counsel, Mr. Bocchieri has established a number of important precedents in intellectual property law and is a noted author and lecturer on intellectual property litigation strategy and tactics.

Among his numerous legal victories, Mr. Bocchieri won the largest award to date in a cyber-piracy case: $117 million (re Qwest Communications Int’l v. One Quest). In addition to pioneering a new method of calculating damages for Internet infringement, Mr. Bocchieri was the principal architect of a patent litigation procedure related to infringement claims that is now used as a textbook example in law courses across the country. Mr. Bocchieri is frequently quoted in legal and national media outlets on cyber-piracy and patent issues, and he has been featured on CNN Headline News as one of the country’s leading experts on Internet piracy.

“Bret brings talent, experience, and leadership to a vitally important practice area for our clients here in Southern California,” said Thomas E. Hill, managing partner of Thelen Reid’s West Coast operations and Los Angeles office. “He is a top-flight lawyer and rainmaker, and he will help us continue the expansion of our IP practice.”

“Thelen Reid’s strong reputation in intellectual property, its presence in major markets, and its profile in California set the firm apart,” said Bocchieri. “I'm very excited about joining my new colleagues in growing the firm’s intellectual property practice.”

Mr. Bocchieri is a frequent speaker and author of publications in the area of intellectual property. He served as the Vice Chair (1995-99) of the Committee on Intellectual Property for the American Bar Association and has also served in leadership roles for the State Bar of California.

Partner Lisa Scruggs Receives Alta May Hulett Award
Jenner & Block Partner Lisa T. Scruggs was honored on May 31 by the Chicago Bar Association (CBA) Alliance for Women with its 2006 Alta May Hulett Award, which recognizes lawyers that promote positive change and have contributed to the advancement of women in the legal profession.

Ms. Scruggs was lauded for her two years of service as Senior Policy Advisor to the Chicago Public School’s (CPS) Chief Executive Officer, and for her work as Vice President of the Board of Directors and founding Board member of the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School, a math, science and technology academy and the only all-girls public school in Chicago.

In presenting Ms. Scruggs with the award, which is named for the first woman in Illinois to become an attorney, Judge Ann C. Williams praised Ms. Scruggs for her integrity and “perceptive” insights into the law, as well as her support of mentoring programs for personal and professional development. In addition, she highlighted Ms. Scruggs ability to “get the job done, no matter what it takes,” while maintaining her sense of humor and without sacrificing commitments to her family. Ms. Scruggs was a clerk for Judge Williams on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit from 1998-2000.

Ms. Scruggs, a member of the Firm’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution Practice, has developed a broad body of experience in counseling non-profit organizations and schools on a variety of education policy governance issues. Most recently, she was part of a unique two-year “executive loan” arrangement with the CPS, in which she provided legal and policy advice focusing on new school creation, implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act and analysis of federal and local funding sources.
