Vasaly honored with MSBA President’s Award for commitment to judicial campaign conduct awareness
The law firm of Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand is proud to announce that attorney Mary Vasaly will receive the Minnesota State Bar Association's President's Award for her work spearheading the state bar's formation of a Judicial Elections Campaign Conduct Committee to address concerns about changes in the process of judicial elections in Minnesota.

""I would like to express my gratitude and admiration for Mary's work on this crucial issue,"" says Susan Holden, president of the MSBA. ""And as president I have an excellent way to do just that by selecting her to receive the President's Award for her tireless work on the Judicial Elections Campaign Conduct Committee.""

The MSBA's President's Award is the only award selected by the bar president. All other bar awards are selected by bar committees.

Holden will bestow the award on Vasaly at the MSBA’s annual convention in Brainerd, Minn., June 21-23. But in a departure from prior years, Vasaly will receive her award during a plenary session on the first day of the convention, rather than at the General Assembly on the final day. This change will allow all convention attendees to see Vasaly get her much deserved award.

""This award is particularly meaningful to me because preserving the independence of Minnesota’s judiciary is paramount,"" Vasaly explained. ""Irresponsible campaign conduct threatens judicial independence. In light of that, the bar has two important tasks to perform now that there are no formal restraints on candidate conduct: first, to encourage judicial candidates to engage in responsible campaign conduct and second, to educate the public about the role of the judiciary in our system of government.""

Practicing in the areas of appeals, probate/trust litigation and commercial litigation at Maslon for more than 20 years, Vasaly has appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court, and has tried cases and argued appeals in state and federal courts in Minnesota and other states. She was recently named President of Minnesota Women Lawyers. Last year, she received the Pro Bono Award from the Ramsey County Bar Association for her service to the Children's Law Center of Minnesota. She also is a fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, and the American Bar Foundation. Vasaly teaches Appellate Advocacy at the University of St. Thomas Law School and is co-editor of the Eighth Circuit Appellate Practice Manual, now in its third edition. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School.

Founded in 1956, Maslon is an 81-attorney commercial law firm based in Minneapolis. Maslon specializes in the areas of business and securities, financial services, bankruptcy, commercial litigation and arbitration, appeals, tax, trusts and estate planning, employee benefits, insurance, labor and employment, intellectual property, real estate and construction law.
