Drinker Biddle Grabs Montgomery Tax Chairman
Longtime tax department chairman of Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads, David Shechtman, starts in the business and finance department of Drinker Biddle & Reath today. Shechtman joined Montgomery McCracken right out of law school in 1977 and has since built a specialty practice in the area of like-kind exchanges of real estate and other assets. … He said he was at a point that he was receptive to new challenges and liked Drinker Biddle’s depth in the real estate and business transactional side that can help build his tax practice surrounding those areas. … Drinker Biddle chairman Alfred Putnam said the firm has a lot of transactional work that it was looking for help with. … Drinker Biddle managing partner Andrew C. Kassner said the growth of the firm’s business practice to around 200 attorneys spawned the need for more tax attorneys. He said that while Shechtman has a strong practice in like-kind exchanges, even more important to the firm are his general skills as a tax lawyer. … “We look at Dave as a full-service experienced tax partner,” Kassner said. … Shechtman said that [because] Drinker Biddle has more tax associates … he could move some of his work down to so that he can concentrate on the higher-end matters. He said that the firm’s tax partners are trying to keep their heads above water with the growth in the business side of the group. … According to Kassner, the firm has no plans on stopping at Shechtman in growing the tax practice. “The idea here would be that this is a building block for a deeper, larger tax group,” he said. Shechtman said he does plan on helping to grow the tax group.

Tax Lawyer David Shechtman Joins Drinker Biddle
The law firm of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP welcomes David Shechtman as a partner in its Business Tax Group. His practice includes a wide range of federal, state and local tax matters, including tax aspects of mergers, acquisition, and recapitalizations; like-kind exchanges; capital asset disposition planning; S corporations and partnerships; and administrative appeals of federal, state and local tax controversies. He joins Drinker Biddle from the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP, where he was Financial Partner and chairman of the Tax Section for almost 20 years. He will be resident in the Drinker Biddle’s Philadelphia, PA office.

“We are delighted that David has chosen to join our firm,” said Neil K. Haimm, co-head of Drinker Biddle’s Business and Finance Department. “He brings to us extensive experience in complex tax law issues that will serve our clients well.”

“I am eagerly looking forward to working with Drinker’s Tax Group, which is one of the most sophisticated in the City,” said Mr. Shechtman. “I am also anxious to take advantage of the opportunities the Firm’s vibrant business, finance and real estate practices will afford me not only to leverage my existing like-kind exchange practice, but also to extend the scope of my corporate and transactional tax practice.”

Mr. Shechtman has developed a national practice in the area of like-kind exchanges of real estate and other assets. In his capacity as counsel to taxpayers and various exchange intermediaries, he has structured and documented hundreds of like-kind exchange transactions for major oil and gas, telecommunications and railroad companies, as well as REIT’s and smaller real estate owners. He also represents various banks and financial institutions in their capacities as intermediaries, trustees and escrow agents for exchanges.

Mr. Shechtman received his B.A. degree, with high honors in Economics, from Swarthmore College in 1974 and his J.D. degree from Cornell University Law School in 1977. He is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Shechtman frequently writes on tax topics and lectures at American Bar Association meetings and various conferences on tax law. He is an active member of the Section of Taxation of the American Bar Association, serving on the Corporate Tax Committee and currently serving as Chair of the Committee on Sales, Exchanges and Basis. Mr. Shechtman is a former Officer and current Council Member of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Tax Section and has chaired several committees which comment on proposed federal and state regulations. Corporate Board Member Ranks Cooley Godward as a Leading Corporate Law Firm in San Diego and San Francisco
Cooley Godward LLP ranked as the #1 law firm in San Diego, and the #2 law firm in San Francisco, in Corporate Board Member magazine’s sixth annual Legal Industry Research Study, sponsored by FTI, a Baltimore-based consulting firm.

Corporate Board Member’s annual study identifies the top five corporate law firms in 25 major metropolitan areas. The magazine sent questionnaires to directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies, asking which law firms they would most likely select to aid their companies on a broad range of corporate legal issues.

“Law firms especially value our rankings because they come not from their peers—other lawyers—but from the corporate officers, directors, and in-house attorneys who hire law firms and pay their bills,” said William S. Rukeyser, editorial director of Corporate Board Member.

The complete rankings will appear in the magazine’s July/August 2006 special legal issue, “America’s Best Corporate Law Firms,” as well as online at www.boardmember.com/issues/current.

Two Cooley Attorneys Named Most Influential Lawyers in America
Cooley Godward announced today that Chairman and CEO Stephen C. Neal, and Richard E. Climan, head of Cooley’s M&A practice group, were named to the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal, a leading national legal publication, in its most recent issue that came out today.

Neal, Chairman and CEO of Cooley Godward since 2001, represents companies and individuals in civil and criminal matters. He served as lead counsel to PG&E Corp. during its bankruptcy, was lead trial counsel to AT&T in its successful patent infringement case against Microsoft Corp., and currently represents Zenith Electronics Corp. in patent infringement case dealing with HDTV technology, and serves as special asbestos counsel in the pending USG Corp. bankruptcy.

The publication referred to Climan as “Archdealmaker in Silicon Valley,” noting that the technology mergers and acquisitions practice group that he built over the past decade represents eBay Inc., Applied Materials Inc., Adobe Systems Inc. and Quest Software Inc. He and the M&A team at Cooley negotiated some of the biggest technology M&A deals of 2005. He currently chairs the more than 1,000-strong Committee on Negotiated Acquisitions (affiliated with the ABA's Section of Business Law), a global forum for issues relevant to M&A practitioners.

Lawyers named to the list of “100 Most Influential Attorneys” must have a national impact in their fields and beyond, especially over the past five years, and are “lawyers who have the power to shape public affairs, launch industries, shake things up and get things done,” according to The National Law Journal.
