Eckert Seamans’ McGinley and Meck Among Top 50 Pittsburgh Super Lawyers
The national law firm Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, LLC today announced that members John R. McGinley, Jr., and John F. Meck were among Pittsburgh’s top 50 attorneys named by PennsylvaniaSuper Lawyers2006. The list is compiled by Philadelphia Magazine and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers Magazine. A total of 28 firm attorneys were named as Pennsylvania Super Lawyers this year, an honor determined by surveying over 36,000 Pennsylvania attorneys as part of a peer selection process.

According to Law & Politics, the organization which publishes Pennsylvania Super Lawyers Magazine, five percent of Pennsylvania attorneys are included in the “Super Lawyers” directory, which is broadly distributed in the legal and business communities.

“Both Jack McGinley and Jack Meck are two of our most dedicated members,” said Tim Ryan, Eckert Seamans’ Chief Executive Officer. “They stand for the highest standards in the profession and for the standards we strive to pursue every day at Eckert Seamans.”

Mr. McGinley is a member of the firm’s Business Division, where he is a trial attorney with extensive experience in corporate, business, real estate, and professional liability matters. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is director of Pittsburgh Steelers Sports, Inc. and Wilson-McGinley. He is also chairman of Ballymoney & Company, a business that develops and manages real estate properties. He is on the boards of St. Bonaventure University, Mercy Hospital Foundation, and Pittsburgh Mercy Health System. He received his bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University and his law degree from Duquesne University School of Law.

Mr. Meck is a member of the firm’s Business Division, where he has a substantial practice in probate, trust and tax litigation, as well as in the traditional areas. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, serving on the Fiduciary Litigation Committee. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Joint State Government Commission’s Advisory Committee on Decedent’s Estates Law, a group of non-legislators drawn from the bench and probate bar to draft and advise on legislation in the field. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University and his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

In Pittsburgh, 17 firm attorneys were named to the list. In Philadelphia, nine firm attorneys were selected. And in Harrisburg, two firm attorneys were selected.

The basis for selection to the list included noteworthy verdicts or settlements; creativity or innovation within the legal process; the number of cases tried or transactions handled; years in practice; position within the firm; professional activities; writings and lectures; community involvement and volunteer work; professional degrees or training; and academic background, including honors and clerkships.

Steve Berman named as one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America
Seattle attorney Steve Berman was named yesterday as one of the nation's 100 most influential lawyers in America by The National Law Journal, and one of only two Washington state attorneys to make the prestigious list.

The NLJ list, compiled once every six years, is considered one of the most coveted awards in the legal community. This is Berman's second time to achieve the honor.

As managing partner of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, Berman has led some of the country's most important cases and helped enhance the lives of countless individuals.

The National Law Journal cited Berman's work as a lead attorney for a class of Hungarian holocaust survivors and their heirs, where Berman helped secure a $25.5 million dollar settlement fund with the United States government after it failed to return personal artifacts seized just prior to the end of WWII.

The publication also cited Berman's work to end price-gouging by hospitals of the uninsured in a case involving Tenet Healthcare. In that case, Berman reached an agreement with healthcare giant Tenet to refund money to patients nationwide, and to adopt an equitable billing model which is now the model plan for many healthcare providers across the country.

In addition to his legal work, Berman and his wife Kathy endowed the Steve and Kathy Berman Environmental Law Clinic at the University of Washington. The clinic prepares students to become knowledgeable legal advocates for the Pacific Northwest's unique environmental concerns.

According to the publication, attorneys included in the list have ""clout to make big things happen."" The description goes on to say the publication was ""looking for lawyers who had a national impact in their fields and beyond, especially over the past five years-lawyers who have the power to shape public affairs, launch industries, shake things up and get things done.
