Chambers USA Recognizes 53 Debevoise “Leading Lawyers”
Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2006 selected 53 Debevoise & Plimpton LLP partners as among the country’s leading lawyers, in their annual survey of U.S.-based lawyers and law firms. The firm was ranked in the first tier in seven practice areas; eight partners were named in the first tier in their practice areas, and two were named Star Performers, in the 2006 edition of the guide.

In addition, partners Donald Francis Donovan and David W. Rivkin received the first Chambers USA Award for Excellence in International Arbitration. The Chambers USA Awards for Excellence, which were presented in a ceremony held on June 1, recognized outstanding individuals in 19 practice areas who demonstrated top tier legal skill and dedication to providing the highest possible level of client service.

Sean Coffey Discusses Director and Trustee Liability at Stanford Law School’s Fiduciary College 2006
BLB&G Partner Sean Coffey served as a panelist at Stanford Law School’s Fiduciary College 2006, which took place in Stanford, California on Thursday, June 22, 2006. In a panel entitled "Director and Trustee Liability," Mr. Coffey discussed how the recent wave of corporate scandals has increased director and trustee liability, and outlined “best practice” solutions for trustees and senior managers of foundations, endowments, and pension funds that are currently working in an environment of heightened scrutiny from government regulators, law enforcement agencies, and class action lawyers.

As lead trial counsel for the investor class in WorldCom, Mr. Coffey and his team helped secure a settlement of over $6.15 billion. The WorldCom settlement included an unprecedented $24.75 million personal payment by the company's former outside directors -- nearly 20% of the collective net worth of these individuals. According to the Wall Street Journal, the director settlement has “shaken corporate boardrooms” across the country.

Tom joins the firm as a tax partner in the Toronto office.

Tom has extensive experience advising clients on a wide range of corporate income tax matters, with particular emphasis on domestic and cross-border investments, acquisitions and reorganizations. A significant portion of Tom's practice also involves representing clients in disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency, both at the audit and administrative appeals levels and before the courts.

Tom is a frequent speaker and writer on tax matters, and has presented papers at industry and professional conferences and associations.

Attorney John D. Shors Awarded the Iowa Bar Association’s Award Of Merit
The Iowa Bar Association has awarded Attorney John D. Shors the distinguished Award of Merit at the annual meeting Wednesday, June 21, 2006. The first merit award was presented in 1947 and has since been awarded to one member of the bar each year in recognition of their personal standards and accomplishments as lawyers and as citizens, with outstanding service to the Iowa Bar Association. Mr. Shors was selected out of 7,000 attorney members.

Mr. Shors is the most senior member of the Davis Brown Law Firm. Over his career he has represented clients such as Iowa State University; Mercy Medical Center; and The Iowa Capital Investment Corp. John has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University and a J.D. with high honors from the University of Iowa. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA.

Mr. Shors has been heavily involved with The Iowa State Bar Association. He served as its Vice President from 1990 to 1991, and as its President from 1992 to 1993. Mr. Shors has also held positions at The American Bar Association, where he served as a member of the House of Delegates; The American Judicature Society, where he served as a member of the Board of Directors; and The Polk County Bar Association, where he served as President. Mr. Shors has also held numerous board positions, which include, The Iowa State University Foundation (Chairman), The Iowa State University Research Park (Director), Mercy Housing/Denver (Director), Edge Technologies (Director) and the Iowa Research Council (Director).

Mr. Shors has co-authored a two-volume book: Closely Held Corporations in Business and Estate Planning published by Little Brown & Company and numerous articles involving business and tax. Mr. Shors has been honored with other awards, which include ""The Brotherhood Award"" by The Iowa Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, ""The Award of Merit"" by The Iowa State Bar Association/Young Lawyers Section, ""The I.S.U. Alumni Medal"" by Iowa State University's Alumni Association, and ""The Good Guy Award"" by the Iowa Women's Professional Corporation.
