Gibson Dunn & Crutcher Creates Scholarship Fund at Mount St. Mary\'s College
Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP is pleased to announce the creation of a scholarship fund at Mount St. Mary's College. The Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher Scholarship will be awarded to students studying pre-law at the College for tuition and law-related programs. The scholarships, in the amount of $10,000, will be awarded to students over a two-year period beginning in 2006.

In addition to the financial contribution, Gibson Dunn will include a mentoring component to the scholarships. A Gibson Dunn lawyer will serve as a mentor for each recipient during the recipient’s remaining term at the College. The College’s pre-law minor offers students an in-depth exploration of analytic skills needed to practice law. Students may choose from courses in mock trial, constitutional law, business law, civil rights, and criminal law.

""A number of Gibson Dunn lawyers routinely assist Mount St. Mary’s mock trial team in competition and have been highly impressed by the students’ capabilities,"" said Leslie Ripley, Director of Recruiting and Diversity at Gibson Dunn. ""Many have what it takes to succeed at a major law school, but even the cost of taking an LSAT review course is prohibitive for many students with limited financial means. We hope that this scholarship will help students pursue a career in law.""

Ripley added, ""We are also excited to include mentoring as part of the package. The recipients will be paired with a Gibson Dunn attorney, who can offer recipients a closer view of the profession through invitations to work-related functions, such as bar association events.""

Dr. Stephanie Cubba, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Mount Saint Mary’s, said, ""The scholarship fund will be a wonderful way to help our pre-law students achieve their professional goals. We are very grateful to Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher not only for the monetary gift, but for offering the time and expertise of its lawyers to assist our students.

DAVIS WRIGHT TREMAINE PARTNER CO-AUTHORS ARTICLE ON INTERNATIONAL JOINT VENTURES
Milton R. Stewart, a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP (DWT) with 35 years experience in structuring mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, reorganizations and management buyouts, has published a national article on international joint ventures (IJV)s in ACC Docket, a publication geared to in-house legal counsel. Stewart co-authored an article with adidas North America General Counsel Paul Ehrlich, for the June 2006 issue.

“Virtually every business needs to internationally source and distribute goods, services or intellectual property,” said Stewart. “However, only the largest companies have the resources and experience to navigate the international legal and regulatory waters, while successfully adapting to cultural norms, language barriers or currency issues. Smaller companies especially may be interested in an IJV, but they lack the resources or experience to move forward or to know what they’re getting into. This article is designed to show companies of all sizes the advantages and disadvantages of IJVs, and to provide guidance for structuring them, and, as well, provide tips on avoiding common mistakes and maximizing the chances for their success.” The article is available online at http://www.dwt.com/lawdir/publications/06-06_Stewart.pdf.

In addition to maintaining his transactional practice and acting as general counsel to a number of Northwest companies, Stewart is the business development and client relations partner for DWT and a member of the firm’s Strategic Growth Committee. He also has an active role in several civic and professional organizations, including board memberships with Lex Mundi (the world’s leading association of independent law firms), the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (emeritus) and the Indiana University Foundation. Stewart is a member of the Oregon and Washington state bar associations.

Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is a national business and litigation law firm with more than 420 attorneys in its nine offices located throughout the Pacific Northwest, and in Anchorage, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C., and Shanghai, China.
