Fulbright Wins American Immigration Lawyers Association Pro Bono Award
Fulbright received the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) National Pro Bono Award at its annual conference in San Antonio. Recognizing Fulbright’s outstanding efforts in providing pro bono representation to immigrants, Fulbright will receive an honorarium from a fund of the American Immigration Law Foundation. Fulbright is one of only three large firms that have won this award since its inception in 1987.
John Sullivan
Partner
HoustonSince March 2005, Fulbright has made a major commitment to representing the interests of unaccompanied immigrant children, partnering with the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children, the Vera Institute for Justice, Pro Bar and the University of Houston Law Center’s Immigration Clinic.

A number of Fulbright attorneys have been been handling immigration cases, conducting ""Know Your Rights"" presentations at juvenile detention centers, performing case assessment interviews, as well as representing children who are victims of human trafficking.

On June 7, Fulbright hosted a Washington D.C. reception to launch ""The Unaccompanied Children Pro Bono Outreach Project."" Both Senator Sam Brownback and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Thomas Albrecht spoke, highlighting the need that Fulbright has been addressing:

Every year, thousands of children fleeing war, persecution, abusive families, and extreme poverty travel to the United States unaccompanied by a parent or guardian. Approximately 8,000 of these children are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and placed into the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, pending the outcome of their immigration court proceedings.

The vast majority of these children, most of whom do not speak English well, are left alone to navigate a complex immigration system without the assistance of an attorney. Some of these children have legitimate legal remedies such as asylum or special visas for victims of crimes and children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned—all of which are difficult to obtain without the assistance of a trained legal representative...

When Fulbright partner John Sullivan accepted the award on Fulbright’s behalf, he recognized Fulbright’s endless advocacy to promote the rights of unaccompanied immigrant children.

Directors Name Calfee One of Cleveland\'s Top Firms
Corporate Board Member magazine recently announced the results of its sixth annual Legal Industry Research Study, sponsored by FTI, a Baltimore-based consulting firm. Directors working in Cleveland named Calfee as the fourth top corporate law firm in Cleveland.

Corporate Board Member/FTI’s annual study identifies the top 20 national corporate law firms and the top five corporate law firms in 25 major metropolitan areas, according to CEOs and directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ Stock Market, New York Stock Exchange or American Stock Exchange.

“Law firms especially value our rankings because they come not from their peers -- other lawyers -- but from the corporate officers, directors, and in-house attorneys who hire law firms and pay their bills,” said William S. Rukeyser, editorial director of Corporate Board Member.

The complete national and metropolitan rankings appear in the July/August 2006 issue of Corporate Board Member and can be accessed online at www.boardmember.com/issues/current.
