Six Venable Attorneys Selected as Maryland\'s Legal Elite
Venable LLP, Maryland’s largest law firm, is pleased to announce that six of its attorneys have been selected as Maryland’s “Legal Elite” by Baltimore SmartCEO Magazine. They are: Michael J. Baader, Gregory A. Cross, Todd J. Horn, Vicki Margolis, Charles J. Morton and Richard L. Wasserman.

Baltimore SmartCEO selected a total 60 of Maryland’s attorneys as its “Legal Elite.” Attorneys were nominated by CEOs, business owners and industry and legal experts and then evaluated by area of expertise, leadership, professional accomplishments, innovation, and relationship development.

Mr. Baader, Partner-In-Charge of Venable’s Baltimoreoffice, has advised numerous companies in the region over the past two decades on financing, strategic alliances and M&A issues that are critical to their growth and success. Mr. Baader has also advised many private equity and venture capital firms in their investments in companies in the region. Mr. Baader concentrates on all aspects of corporate planning and business advisory services to corporate clients, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, asset sales, joint ventures, venture capital investments, financing transactions and general corporate planning. This is the second year Mr. Baader has been selected as Maryland's Legal Elite.

Mr. Cross is a partner in Venable’s Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Group and represents creditors on a nationwide basis. He has established national legal precedents recharacterizing financial instruments, defining the relationship of investors in securitized pools and restricting a Bankruptcy Court's ability to sell property in the face of a creditor's objections. On behalf of debtors, Mr. Cross has restructured debt obligation as large as $2 billion and has confirmed one of Maryland 's larger plans of reorganization.

For more than 18 years, Mr. Horn has counseled and represented businesses in all types of employment matters in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area. He recently served as defense counsel in one of the largest employment discrimination class action lawsuits in history and is widely recognized for his extensive experience in litigation involving discrimination, sex harassment, compensation, defamation, ERISA and wrongful discharge. Mr. Horn is the co-author with Stanley Mazaroff of the book Maryland Employment Law, which has been cited on multiple occasions by the Maryland State and Federal Courts and is regarded as the principal publication in its field.

Ms. Margolis is chair of the firm’s Patent Litigation Group and was recognized as one of ""Maryland's Top 100 Women"" by the Daily Record and Baltimore Business Journal's ""40 Under 40."" Ms. Margolis handles all types of technology litigation for national clients in industries ranging from pharmaceutical, biotech, financial, to consumer products, and works with them on their global IP licensing and enforcement strategies. Ms. Margolis is also a member of the Character Committee of the Court of Appeals of Marylandfor the Sixth Appellate Court, where she reviews and mentors applicants who are applying for the Maryland State Bar.

Mr. Morton is the Chair of the Mezzanine Finance Practice Group at Venable, and has been practicing in the field of business transactions, mergers and acquisitions, technology transactions, and mezzanine finance for more than 15 years. He recently closed a $165 million sale of an electronics business to a Fortune 100 company and was noted as ""one of the best lawyers in Baltimore when it comes to advising entrepreneurial firms"" by the Baltimore Business Journal. This is the second year Mr. Morton has been selected for this honor.

Mr. Wasserman is the senior partner in Venable’s Bankruptcy and Creditors’ Rights Group and concentrates his practice in matters involving bankruptcy and bankruptcy-related litigation, creditors’ rights, secured transactions, workouts, complex Chapter 11 reorganizations and restructurings. Mr. Wasserman is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy, a past President of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland and has served as a trustee, examiner and counsel in significant national and regional bankruptcy cases. MEL SHOTTEN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF CINCINNATI BAR FOUNDATION
Melvin S. Shotten, a partner in the Business and Finance Department of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP, has been elected president of the Cincinnati Bar Foundation.

The Cincinnati Bar Foundation’s tradition of making grants and otherwise encouraging programs that improve access to justice and support the legal profession began in 1961. As the philanthropic arm of the Cincinnati Bar Association and the only fully-independent law related charitable organization in Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Bar Foundation concentrates grant-making efforts in four major areas:

• Encouraging knowledge and understanding of, and respect for, the law in the community, particularly with young people;
• Improving the quality and administration of justice in all its facets;
• Supporting the delivery of legal services at an affordable cost for the poor, elderly and otherwise disadvantaged; and
• Fostering professionalism and civility in the practice of law.

Shotten, a resident of Hyde Park, advises and represents financial institutions and borrowers in complex loan and work-out situations. Shotten received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan College of Engineering, and law degree from the University of Michigan College of Law, graduating from both programs with honors. Firm’s Washington, D.C. Office Receives 2006 Law Firm Pro Bono Award
The Washington, D.C. office of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. was honored with the 2006 Law Firm Pro Bono Award in the small firm category, presented at the D.C. Bar annual Business Meeting & Awards Dinner on June 22. The Washington office received the award for its work in the areas of child custody, landlord-tenant and business fraud matters and devoted approximately 3 percent of its total billable hours to pro bono work.

Partner, Eric Jackson, the office’s Pro Bono Coordinator in 2005, and Managing Partner, Keith Styles accepted the award on behalf of the 30 Washington office attorneys who contributed their time towards pro bono.

“One of our firm’s strongest core values is an unwavering commitment to equal access to the justice system,” Styles said. “I am very proud of this office’s efforts in that regard.""

Barbara Rom of Pepper Hamilton Appointed Treasurer of Detroit Chapter of the Federal Bar Association
Barbara Rom, a partner with Pepper Hamilton LLP and the partner in charge of the firm’s Detroit office, has been appointed treasurer of the Detroit Chapter of the Federal Bar Association for a one-year term.

Ms. Rom concentrates her practice in workouts, bankruptcy, insolvency and commercial litigation, and is certified as a business bankruptcy specialist by the American Board of Certification, the nation’s premier legal specialty certification organization.

She is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. She is chairwoman of a merit selection panel to screen applicants for a new post on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and she has been designated a Life Delegate by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Ms. Rom is named in The Best Lawyers in America (Naifeh & Smith) and has been selected by Crain’s Detroit Business as one of “Detroit’s Most Influential Women.” She is a member of the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

HOWREY BRUSSELS ADDS ANOTHER TOP GERMAN COMPETITION PARTNER
Howrey LLP has announced yet another important addition to its ever growing roster of first class competition lawyers. Martina Maier, until recently co-head of the EU & Competition practice group at Haarmann Hemmelrath, will join the firm as a Partner on July 24th. Her associate Philipp Werner will also make the move to Howrey. This addition will raise the total number of German qualified competition lawyers in Howrey’s Brussels office to four and brings the rapidly expanding Brussels office to more than 35 lawyers and other professionals.

Furthermore she is recommended in the PLC Global Counsel Handbook Competition Law and the JUVE Handbook of German Commercial Law firms for Antitrust Law, State Aids and European Law.

Martina holds a diploma in International Public Administration of the prestigious French Ecole Nationale d’Administration, and is also admitted to the Paris bar. In the past, she has successfully led her European and German practice group from Brussels and Paris. She will continue to spend some of her time in Howrey’s Paris office allowing her to participate in developing the competition practice in France. Howrey’s Paris office currently focuses on IP.

IP Lawyer Receives Award for Outstanding Service to ABA
Hogan & Hartson LLP Lawyer Yoncha L. Kundupoglu received an award for outstanding service to the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association (ABA) from 2005 to 2006 during that section's annual meeting. Kundupoglu was recently appointed as the chair of the ABA IP Law Section's Division on Professionalism and Section Relations for the 2006-2007 term. In her capacity as division chair, she will be managing and coordinating the activities of the 10 committees within that division. She also was appointed the ABA IP Law Section Liaison to the Membership Committee of the Section Officers Conference for the upcoming year.
