Cox takes charge of H&L’s pro bono efforts
Former state district judge Joe Cox has been named the new head of Pro Bono and Community Activities at Hughes & Luce, leading the firm’s overall efforts in providing legal services and leadership in the state.

“I look forward to taking on this role for the firm,” said Cox, who received a Dallas Bar Association pro bono award for Outstanding Judiciary Support in 2003. “Pro bono work has always been a priority for me and the firm. I hope to expand our efforts and make an even greater impact on our community than we ever have.”

The firm puts in more than 4,200 hours of pro bono work each year and many more hours serving in leadership positions and on projects for community organizations. Among the groups the firm’s attorneys volunteer with are the Housing Crisis Center, Habitat for Humanity, Legal Services of North Texas, Dallas Attorney Volunteer Program. Hughes & Luce attorneys also serve on boards of groups such as Ballet Austin, Fort Worth Sister Cities Program, Dallas Museum of Art, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and Wednesday’s Child Benefit Corporation.

Recent additions to the firm’s program include providing all summer associates with pro bono projects to allow them more hands-on legal experience. Also, the firm is partnering on several new projects with the Dallas Bar Association and clients to provide pro bono services.

“I want to take pro bono and our firm’s participation to higher levels of involvement in actual activities and in work relationships with clients or prospective clients,” said Bob Mow, H&L managing partner. “We are looking to involve the entire firm – lawyers, paralegals and administrative staff – to increase involvement, contributions to the community and client development.

Hogan & Hartson Deepens International Private Equity Practice
Hogan & Hartson LLP has announced that Dr. Uwe H. Steininger, formerly at SJ Berwin in Munich, will join the firm as a partner effective July 10.

Widely recognized as a leading international private equity and funds lawyer, Dr. Steininger will help lead the German and pan-European expansion of Hogan & Hartson’s private equity and alternative investments practice. This recent addition follows the arrival of corporate and M&A partner Dr. Jochen Schaefer in Munich late last year.

Commented Dr. Steininger: ""By joining Hogan & Hartson, I can now utilize the potential of an international law firm that acts beyond Europe and expand my existing German and global private equity and alternative investments practice. I have been looking forward to this new challenge and will meet it with great commitment.""

Jeffrey M. Hurlburt, co-head of Hogan’s European Private Equity and Venture Capital practice said: ""Dr. Steininger’s experience and reputation in the European private equity market, as well as his excellent contacts in London, will add significant strength to our growing pan-European and transatlantic private equity practice. He is a key addition to our team advising global private equity clients on deal structuring for new money investments, trade sales and other exits, as well as in our growing international fund formation practice. As our client base increasingly focuses on global investment opportunities, our team needs to expand to meet these demands. We are pleased that Dr. Steininger will play a key part in our continuing efforts to expand our international practice in this area.""

""We are delighted to be able to bring on such an accomplished private equity partner,"" said Gernod Meinel, managing partner of the German offices. ""Hogan & Hartson’s private equity practice will be significantly strengthened with the arrival of Dr. Steininger. His legal know-how combined with his experience in developing international practices will significantly increase our private equity/alternative investments business in Munich, Germany, and worldwide.""

Dr. Uwe Steininger studied at the Universität Heidelberg. His legal career began in 1983 as in-house counsel at Siemens where he worked on international mergers and acquisitions in Germany, the U.S., and Eastern Europe until 1986. He also reorganized the company’s considerable real estate portfolio. In 1986, Steininger joined law firm Dissmann & Partner and became partner in 1987 with a focus on M&A and IPOs. In 1996, Steininger joined Baker McKenzie where he was strongly involved in the expansion of the Munich office and the private equity practice. Dr. Steininger left for SJ Berwin in 2000 to serve as joint managing partner and head of the German funds practice.

Dr. Steininger focuses on the areas of private equity/venture capital as well as alternative investments, particularly funds structurings (buy-out funds, venture capital funds, real estate funds, hedge funds, carry systems), venture capital investments, and buyouts (MBO’s, MBI’s, IBO’s, and public-to-private-transactions). Another focus of his work consists of funds, transactions, and financial products adhering to Islamic law. Dr. Steininger is, inter alia, member of the European Venture Capital Association (EVCA), the International Fiscal Association (IFA), and the International Tax Planning Association (ITPA).
