Former U.S. Attorney Dettelbach Joins Firm
Steven M. Dettelbach has joined Baker Hostetler as a partner in the Litigation and Legislative & Regulatory practice groups. Mr. Dettelbach, who will maintain offices in both Cleveland and Washington, D.C., will focus on representing corporations and individuals in all facets of white collar criminal and regulatory matters, conducting internal corporate investigations and designing and implementing corporate compliance programs. Additionally, he will also focus on representing clients involved in Congressional investigations and inquiries.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Dettelbach worked in the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government over a 15-year span, serving as a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., and at two U.S. Attorney’s offices. During his time at the DOJ, Mr. Dettelbach headed criminal investigations or prosecutions in over 20 states and was lead counsel in well over 30 trials. As a prosecutor, Mr. Dettelbach never lost a federal trial.

Most recently, Mr. Dettelbach served as an Assistant United States Attorney on the Organized Crime and Corruption Strike Force in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was the lead prosecutor who, working with the FBI and IRS, prosecuted a series of high profile public corruption and fraud cases, including United States v. Nate Gray et al, a racketeering conspiracy case. His efforts led to nine convictions, including the sitting Mayor of East Cleveland, Ohio, several other elected and appointed officials, and corporate officers in Ohio, Texas and Louisiana.

While working in the United States Senate, where he served as Counsel to the United States Senate Committee of the Judiciary for the Chairman/Ranking Minority Member, Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Mr. Dettelbach worked principally on criminal and oversight matters and had intimate involvement with the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act related to corporate fraud.

In the Senate, Mr. Dettelbach also worked extensively on oversight and investigative matters for the Judiciary Committee, both at the public and classified level, including the investigation that followed the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the enactment of the USA PATRIOT Act.

“With over 15 years experience in the Department of Justice, the U.S. Senate and U.S. Attorney’s offices, Steve’s is exceptionally qualified to advise clients on regulatory matters,” said Cleveland office Managing Partner Hewitt Shaw. “He will also bring a unique perspective to the strong, firmwide white collar defense and corporate investigations practice, which will benefit our clients across the country.
