King & Spalding Expands Energy Practice In Washington
King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, today announced the expansion in Washington, D.C., of its highly regarded energy practice with the arrival of partner Erik J. Swenson, an authority on energy regulatory matters. The firm also announced its expectation that the expansion of its Washington-based energy practice will continue through internal growth and lateral hires.

""Over the last twenty-three years, Erik has developed a reputation as an astute and skillful adviser on energy regulatory matters,"" said J. Sedwick Sollers, managing partner of King & Spalding's Washington, D.C. office. ""Together with our energy lawyers in Atlanta, Houston, London and New York, Erik's arrival extends the reach and expertise of our energy team. We are delighted he has returned to his roots and joined our office, and we look forward to the contributions he will make to the expansion of our energy practice in Washington.""

Swenson has 23 years of experience advising clients in the electric and natural gas sectors, including LNG matters. He practiced in Washington, D.C., from 1983 through 1987 and over the years has been based in King & Spalding's Atlanta, Houston and New York offices.

Swenson specializes in laws and regulations governing the activities of the independent energy industry, in both the electric and natural gas sectors. He also represents energy project participants, industrial companies and commercial companies in transactional matters. He has assisted numerous developers in negotiating key project contracts and obtaining financing; participated in administrative and court proceedings to uphold the rights of developers, industrial companies and lenders under federal and state energy laws; and advised lenders and equity investors with respect to specific energy projects and industry issues.

King & Spalding's 75-lawyer energy team advises energy clients on a broad spectrum of energy and natural resource transactions, cases and arbitrations worldwide, including matters involving oil and gas, traditional power, alternative energy sources and hard minerals. The transactional practice is distinguished by its unique depth of experience in project development and international transactions, from operational and supply chain agreements and issues to complex mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, finance, and international litigation and arbitration.

King & Spalding's energy regulatory attorneys provide regulatory advice and strategy on a transactional basis as well as representation in proceedings before state regulatory commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, including the preparation of applications for authorization to site, construct and operate LNG import facilities, natural gas pipeline facilities and storage facilities, all aspects of natural gas and oil pipeline rate regulation and obtaining government approvals in connection with the import and export of natural gas and liquefied natural gas. King & Spalding attorneys also represent clients in all aspects of regulation under the Federal Power Act and are also active in FERC litigation matters, including proceedings to establish the rules and practices of the New York Independent System Operator, and more recently, litigation to establish natural gas interchangeability standards on an interstate natural gas pipeline.

King & Spalding's Washington, D.C., office employs more than 160 attorneys and non-lawyer professionals, including government relations specialists, trade consultants and policy advisors. These lawyers and professionals practice in a broad range of areas including antitrust, class-action and mass tort litigation, commercial disputes, corporate finance, corporate governance, environmental, FDA/healthcare, public policy and government advocacy, government investigations, international trade, mergers and acquisitions and tax, among others.
