CTW Attorney Appointed to HIMSS National Committee
Clark, Thomas & Winters, A Professional Corporation, announced today that health care attorney Sheila Stine-Keister was recently appointed to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (“HIMSS”) National Personal Health Record (“PHR”) Steering Committee.

Selected from hundreds of applicants, Stine-Keister is the sole attorney appointed to this committee comprised of doctors, health information technology/HIPAA professionals, and health care industry executives. Stine-Keister and fellow committee members will focus on identifying key elements of a PHR, identifying barriers to adoption of PHRs, and developing strategies for removing these barriers along with strategies aimed at increasing PHR adoption. Her appointment will last until July, 2008.

“I am honored to serve on this committee and look forward to sharing the legal perspective on these issues gained from serving health care providers for more than a decade,” Stine-Keister said. “Since the Bush Administration’s mandate to have an interoperable electronic health record system by 2014, health care providers are clamoring for information and processes related to health information technology and sharing health records. Health care professionals must face these challenges NOW to ensure a seamless transition once PHRs are mandated.”

A member of Clark Thomas’s Health Care Section, Stine-Keister focuses her practice on advising health care and pharmaceutical clients on litigation and transactional issues raised by health information technology, HIPAA and multi-state privacy laws. In this connection, she makes frequent presentations and provides training for institutional health care providers, staff and industry and trade associate groups on risk-management, discovery, health information technology and HIPAA. Stine-Keister also services the trial, litigation and mediation needs of health care clients with regard to the defense of negligence liability and general health care malpractice suits and regulatory litigation.
