Hogan & Hartson Receives Award From NAACP for Pro Bono Work
Hogan & Hartson LLP has received the Civil Rights Champion Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The award, presented to the firm during the NAACP's annual convention in Washington, D.C. on July 17, recognized the firm's pro bono service and commitment to advancing civil rights and social justice on behalf of the NAACP.

Hogan & Hartson has assisted NAACP branches on many pro bono matters over the years. In the 1970s, the firm helped to save the NAACP from bankruptcy when a state court judgment in Mississippi threatened its existence. The firm succeeded in obtaining a federal court injunction to stop the enforcement of the state court order until it could be reviewed on appeal. The firm since has assisted NAACP branches in such matters as a long-running school desegregation case in Prince George's County, Maryland, and a Supreme Court case involving voting rights in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. Most recently, Hogan & Hartson and co-counsel settled a series of federal court cases against restaurants in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that closed rather than serving the largely African-American patrons who attend Black Bike Week there each May. The firm is very proud of its long affiliation with the NAACP and honored by the award.
