Randy M. Awdish of Pepper Hamilton Elected Representative of CABA Board of Directors
Randy M. Awdish, an associate with Pepper Hamilton LLP, has been elected as a representative of the board of directors of the Chaldean American Bar Association (CABA). He also will serve as chairperson of the CABA Mentoring Committee. The term is for one year.

Mr. Awdish represents clients in commercial transactions, with an emphasis on corporate and real estate matters. Before joining Pepper in 2002, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of a group of gasoline service stations with combined sales in excess of $10 million.

CABA (www.chaldeanlawyers.org) is a professional association of attorneys in the metropolitan Detroit area dedicated to promoting justice, legal education and community service for all, regardless of social or economic background. Founded as a Special Purpose Bar Association in 1992, CABA has helped to bring Chaldean attorneys together and has been active in a number of community and civic projects.

Pepper has been practicing in downtown Detroit since 1979 and was one of the first national law firms to enter the Detroit market. Lawyers in the office handle bankruptcy and reorganization, corporate and securities (including venture capital and SBIC), environmental (litigation and regulatory), labor and employment, litigation, public finance, real estate and tax matters. The office offers clients all the resources of a large, multi-office firm with a national and international practice.

Orrick Adds Another in a Series of High-Profile Lateral, Corporate Partners
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP announced today that Lawrence B. Low has joined the firm as a corporate partner in its San Francisco office. Low, previously a founding partner of Preston Gates' San Francisco office, is the sixth in a series of high-profile corporate partners to join Orrick in the last three months.

“Expanding our Corporate practice in each of our key markets remains one of the firm's highest priorities,” said Mark Levie, managing director of Orrick's transactional practices. “We believe Larry Low will play an important role in helping us continue to expand our Bay Area corporate and technology practice, as well as our Asia-U.S. cross-border practice.”

Low focuses on representing venture capital funds and investors in their portfolio investments, emerging companies, and more mature companies preparing themselves for either a public offering or merger and acquisition transaction, and public companies. A significant portion of his clients are companies and investors in companies operating in Asia, and Asian investors and companies seeking to establish operations in the U.S.

“Orrick provides a unique combination of both a strong, integrated global platform and a supportive culture that few firms can match around the world, ” said Low. “My practice fits well with Orrick's strategic vision, and I look forward to contributing to the growth and success of the firm.”

Low is very active in the San Francisco community and has a longstanding commitment to public service. In 1995, President Bill Clinton appointed Low as one of four U.S. representatives to serve on the panel of arbitrators of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes. In addition, he has held and holds leadership roles in numerous professional and civic organizations, including serving as a trustee of The Hamlin School, Bay Area Discovery Museum and San Francisco University High School.

Low received a B.S. in Business Administration from University of California at Berkeley in 1976. He received his J.D. from Hastings College of the Law in 1979, where he served as Editor of the Hastings Communication and Entertainment Law Journal, and was the Chairperson of the Asian Law Students Association. Larry served as a Law Clerk to The Honorable Former Associate Justice William P. Clark, Jr. of the California Supreme Court. He was also a member of Norman Y. Mineta's Congressional Legislative Staff for several summers.

Three Luce Forward Partners Named "New Stars" by Lawdragon
Luce Forward Partners Peter H. Klee, Nancy T. Scull, and Darryl Steinhause have been named ""New Stars"" by Lawdragon, and are featured in the publication's ""New Stars, New Worlds"" guide, which recognizes the 500 attorneys nationally ""who are carrying the profession to new frontiers.""

Lawdragon selected its ""New Stars"" through a combination of online balloting and independent research. Their reporters and editors interviewed thousands of attorneys throughout the nation to get their input on the top ""Dragons"" in a particular region or practice field.

Peter H. Klee is a highly successful trial lawyer, who specializes in defending insurance companies that have been sued for breach of insurance contract, bad faith and other torts. He represents many of the major insurance carriers doing business in California. He founded Luce Forward's Insurance Litigation Practice Group in 1987, and has chaired the practice group ever since.

Nancy T. Scull, one of California's most respected real estate attorneys, represents leading national commercial and residential developers. She is widely recognized as one of the State's foremost experts in common interest development and CC&Rs, including urban and mixed use projects and has innovated many of the approaches and liability avoidance techniques, which are now used by most major developers in the State.

Darryl Steinhause conceived the legal structure for the first-ever modern tenant in common (TIC) syndication transaction, just over ten years ago. Today, the TIC model first prepared by Steinhause has expanded into a national industry, with an estimated $5 billion in equity raised in 2005 in TIC-related deals, and TIC sponsors throughout the country utilizing the structure and documentation created by Steinhause. He has acted as tax and securities counsel to over $3 billion of TIC acquisitions. He continues to be at the forefront of the TIC industry by expanding the model into different industries, and speaks nationally at the TIC industry's major events.

King & Spalding’s Doak Bishop Named One of the Top 20 International Arbitration Lawyers in the World
King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, announced today that litigation partner R. Doak Bishop has been named one of the top 20 international arbitrators in the world by PLC Cross-Border Quarterly, a U.K.-based legal publication.

Bishop was given top-20 status based on his successful record acting for the world’s top energy companies and his extensive experience before the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes. According to the publisher, the top 20 practitioners “have made strong contributions to the international arbitration community and are recognized for the strength of their personal practices as well as that of their firms.”

Bishop has more than 27 years experience focusing on international arbitration and litigation of oil and gas, energy, construction and environmental disputes. He has developed a national reputation for his experience in international arbitration, serving both as an arbitrator and counsel in large business disputes, and has earned numerous honors for his leadership in the field.

Glynias Named to 30 Under 30
The 30 Under 30 Class of 2006 as selected by the St. Louis Business Journal includes Blackwell Sanders attorney Josef Glynias. The award recognizes those St. Louisans who “are the future newsmakers of the St. Louis business community.”

A special section profiling each of the award winners was included in the July 14 issue of the publication. Glynias and other honorees were recognized at the annual 30 Under 30 event on July 20 at Windows On Washington.

Glynias is a member of Blackwell Sanders’ Labor & Employment Department. He joined the firm as an associate in 2003 after earning his J.D. from Washington University School of Law (2003), where he was Order of the Coif and an associate editor of the Washington University Law Quarterly. He received his B.J., magna cum laude, from the University of Missouri at Columbia (2000).

He is involved with many charities, and was most recently honored as one of the MS Corporate Achievers “Class of 2006” by the Gateway Area Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He was recognized for his “career commitment and limitless contributions to the community.”

Glynias sits on the board of directors for Craft Alliance, which is a nonprofit organization located in the University City Loop that provides facilities for local and regional artists as well as educational opportunities for community members. He is also active with the Intercommunity Housing Association, which operates two different housing facilities for impoverished St. Louis families and raises money to assist those families.

Hogan & Hartson Represents Sonoco in Acquisition of Ahlstrom's Interest in European Joint Venture
Lawyers with the New York, Brussels, and Berlin offices of Hogan & Hartson LLP are representing Sonoco Products Company, a South Carolina NYSE listed company, in its acquisition of Ahlstrom Corporation's 34.5% interest in Sonoco-Alcore, S.a.r.l., a joint venture formed by the two companies in 2004. The formation of Sonoco-Alcore combined Sonoco and Ahlstrom's European tube, core, and coreboard operations. In 2005, total sales for the joint venture were approximately $330 million.

The acquisition, which gives Sonoco 100 percent ownership in the operations of Sonoco-Alcore, is expected to be completed in this year's third quarter, following customary regulatory approvals.

Founded in 1899, Sonoco is a $3.5 billion global manufacturer of industrial and consumer packaging products and a provider of packaging services.

The Hogan & Hartson team representing Sonoco includes Lex Eley and Stacey Joslin (New York); George Metaxas and Catriona Hatton (Brussels); and Justus Schmidt-Ott and Jörg Meissner (Berlin).
