Daily Journal Recognizes Orrick's Women's Career Initiative
While women comprise close to half of all associates at major law firms, only 17 percent of partners at those firms are women, according to a June 29 San Francisco Daily Journal article. The good news, according to the article, is that law firms are now making enormous efforts industry-wide to retain their women attorneys.

“We're focused on the fact that careers are long and we really want to retain good people,” says Katharine Crost, a partner in Orrick’s New York office who chairs the firm’s Women's Career Initiative, one of the retention programs highlighted in the article.

Orrick's Women's Career Initiative (WCI) supports the goal of work/life integration and assists lawyers in balancing their obligations through alternative work schedules. The WCI affirms the firm's commitment to recruiting, retaining and promoting women attorneys. The group also organizes activities to increase business development opportunities for women.

One component of the WCI is a mentoring circles program in which groups of women throughout the firm meet to develop mentoring relationships, find role models, and discuss issues of common concern. Survey results suggest that firms with mentoring circles see improved results from their retention efforts and ultimately in the promotion of women associates to partners in the firm.

According to the Daily Journal, law firms such as Orrick are also partnering with law schools and the American Bar Association to provide networking and continuing education seminars designed to ease the transition back to work for women who leave the profession for a significant amount of time.

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP Secures Acquittal in Federal Securities Fraud Trial
A team of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP attorneys, led by litigation partner Andrew Schapiro, successfully defended their client Robert Scavone, Jr. in a federal securities fraud trial in the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Scavone, a specialist broker on the New York Stock Exchange, was accused of intentionally mishandling trades in order to increase his firm's profits. After deliberating for less than an hour, the jury acquitted Mr. Scavone of all charges.

""When you put a human being at the middle of a fast-paced, computerized trading system, there are going to be some small number of trades that don't get executed properly,"" said Mr. Schapiro. ""That's all that happened here, and the jury didn't need much time to reach that conclusion. I wish the prosecutors had understood that from the outset; if they had, Mr. Scavone would have been spared this whole ordeal.""

This win is the first of its nature in the Southern District. Earlier this year two specialists facing similar charges pleaded guilty, and last month two others were convicted of one count of securities fraud each. If convicted, Mr. Scavone would have faced a lengthy prison sentence.

Lawyers in Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's Securities Enforcement practice have extensive experience defending the full range of investigations conducted by the SEC, CFTC, NYSE, NASD, individual states, and other self-regulatory organizations (SROs) on behalf of institutional and individual clients. Our team includes former senior SEC and NASD enforcement attorneys and federal prosecutors who are at the forefront of defending against ever-changing regulatory priorities and investigative initiatives.

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw is among the largest law firms in the world with more than 1,400 lawyers practicing in seven U.S. cities (Chicago, Charlotte, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, and Washington) and six European cities (Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, Frankfurt, London, and Paris)
