DAY, BERRY & HOWARD EXTENDS GEOGRAPHIC REACH WITH OPENING OF WASHINGTON D.C. OFFICE AND EXPANDED NEW YORK OFFICE
Day, Berry & Howard LLP today announced that it will open a new office in Washington D.C. to support the firm’s growing Energy Practice and will expand its New York office with the addition of two experienced commercial trial lawyers, 1 counsel and 3 associates.

New Partner Richard M. Lorenzo, and two of his colleagues, Arthur Adelberg and Jay Matson, will spearhead the firm’s new Washington office. New partners M. Alexander Bowie, II and James G. Szymanski, along with three of their colleagues, will join the firm’s New York office and its growing Commercial Litigation Practice. The transition is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.

“Today’s announced expansions are important steps in Day Berry & Howard’s strategic growth plans. They will add significant experience and depth, along with greater geographic reach, to two of our key practices, which will allow us to provide more and better service to our clients. The addition of Alex and Jimmy and their team in New York adds greatly to our capability to handle large scale commercial litigation throughout the country.”

Energy Veteran to Lead Washington Office
Partner Richard Lorenzo brings more than 25 years of experience in the energy industry to Day, Berry & Howard. Lorenzo has had extensive experience representing parties in federal and state courts and regulatory proceedings. While spending the majority of his time in Washington, Lorenzo will maintain his New York office. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Energy Bar and New York State Bar Associations. He holds a Master of Laws from Columbia University.

Arthur Adelberg also brings to the DC office more than 25 years of industry experience, including assignments as the chief legal officer and chief financial officer of a major investor owned utility. Jay Matson brings more than a dozen years handling complex energy issues before state and federal regulators.

Firm Expands Commercial Litigation Practice, Grows New York Office
The growth of the Commercial Litigation Practice in New York extends the firm’s ability to handle a wide variety of commercial litigation matters in federal and state courts throughout the United States.

Partner Jimmy Szymanski will lead the Commercial Litigation Group in New York. As an accomplished trial lawyer, Szymanski has participated in numerous antitrust, securities fraud, trade secret and copyright cases over the past 25 years. Szymanski is a member of the New York Bar and graduated from Cornell Law School.

Alex Bowie is a trial lawyer experienced in a wide range of commercial litigation and intellectual property disputes including patent, trademark and copyright litigation. Bowie is admitted to the New York State and Federal Courts and is a member of the Association of the Bar of The City of New York and The Federal Bar Council. Bowie graduated from the Widener University School of Law.

To further build out the team, Szymanski and Bowie will be joined by Associates Corinne Richardson and Amy J. Iannone and Counsel Theodore F. Duver.

Cooley ranked among top-scoring firms in both Vault and The American Lawyer annual associate surveys
In the recent American Lawyer survey of mid-level associates, Cooley Godward LLP achieved the #3 ranking among Am Law 100/Global 100 Firms. Vault’s national survey results placed Cooley 5th among the ""best firms to work for.""

The American Lawyer 2006 Mid-Level Associate Survey

The Mid-Level Associate Survey report was based on responses from 6,568 midlevels (third – fifth-year associates) at 197 participating firms (175 of which returned the minimum ten responses needed to be included in the national rankings).

In 2006, Cooley achieved the #3 ranking among Am Law 100/Global 100 Firms. For the third year in a row, Cooley was ranked in the top 10 among the best places to work nationally and ranked #2 in San Diego; and #4 in Palo Alto and #6 in San Francisco within the San Francisco Bay Area.

Among the factors this survey assesses are work satisfaction, compensation, relations between associates and partners, training, openness, billable hours, the firm's attitude toward pro bono work and the likelihood of the associate being at the firm in two years.

Carlton Fields Shareholder, Kristy M. Johnson, Elected to FAWL Board of Directors
Carlton Fields Miami Shareholder, Kristy M. Johnson, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Miami Chapter of the Florida Association of Women Lawyers (FAWL).

Johnson practices in the Health Care and the Labor & Employment Practice Groups. Her focus is complex health care fraud and representing health professionals in state licensure and disciplinary proceedings, employment law representing management, health regulatory issues, and complex commercial litigation.

Johnson is a member of The Florida Bar, American Bar Association, and Dade County Bar Association. Prior to joining the Firm, she worked for the Agency for Health Care Administration in Tallahassee, Florida where she litigated complex medical regulatory cases before the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings and the Florida Board of Medicine. Johnson graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science in 1994. She received her J.D., with honors, from the University of Florida College of Law in 1998.

Stephanie R. Bolton Joins Carlton Fields in the Tampa Office

San Francisco Business Times Names Orrick Top Corporate Philanthropist
For the third consecutive year, San Francisco Business Times named Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe as one of the top corporate philanthropists in the region, based on their generosity towards local Bay Area charities in 2005.

Orrick, number 34 on the list of ""Top Corporate Philanthropists in the Greater Bay Area,"" gave $594,030 in total cash contributions to Bay Area based charities and more than $2 million to charities worldwide in 2005. Orrick's cash giving per Bay area employee was the highest of any law firm listed at $1,169.

Orrick is dedicated to supporting local charities through a combination of pro bono legal services, financial contributions, as well as volunteerism. In 2005, lawyers and staff from Orrick's Silicon Valley office organized their annual charity auction and raised over $36,000 for Students Rising Above, a scholarship program for low-income, at-risk high school seniors. Additionally, Orrick continued to underwrite programs for the SFMOMA, San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Opera, an after-school enrichment program at Bessie Carmichael Elementary School, and in honor of former partner Marie Riehle for the National Brain Tumor Foundation.

According to the San Francisco Business Times, overall corporate cash contributions to Bay Area charities are up from 2004 and have exceeded levels from the dot-com boom. Combined, the 65 companies listed gave $107,418,254 million to local charities.

Dawn Moskalow Installed as the President of the South Jersey Paralegal Association
Parker McCay paralegal Dawn Moskalow was recently installed as president of the South Jersey Paralegal Association (SJPA) at the Association’s recent Installation Dinner Meeting.

Ms. Moskalow will serve as SJPA president for the 2006-2007 term. The SJPA is a non-profit organization of approximately 120 members that provides professional support and expands recognition of the paralegal profession, offers continuing legal education, facilitates improvements in paralegal education programs, and promotes the paralegal image.

As president, Ms. Moskalow will preside at all board and general membership meetings, appoint committee chairs, and supervise the work of the board and special committees.

Ms. Moskalow is a paralegal in Parker McCay’s personal injury department. She is a resident of Sicklerville, N.J.

Miller Certified in Business Litigation Law
Mark N. Miller, a shareholder with the law firm of GrayRobinson, has been certified by The Florida Bar as a specialist in the practice area of business litigation. Only 215 attorneys in the State of Florida have achieved this recognition. This certification identifies Miller as a lawyer with special knowledge, skills and proficiency in business litigation. Less than .03% of the attorneys licensed to practice in the State of Florida hold this designation. Miller has represented clients in both State and Federal Court and has extensive jury trial experience.
