Partner Terence E. Smolev Appointed Vice Chair of First Annual
Terence E. Smolev, a resident of Jericho NY, and partner at the Mineola based law firm of Forchelli, Curto, Schwartz, Mineo, Carlino & Cohn, LLP (FCSMC&C), has been appointed to serve as a vice chair for the New York City Police Museum’s First Annual Police Hero Awards Dinner.

Benefiting The Police Museum Children’s Education Fund, the Police Hero Awards will honor a number of extraordinary police officers for outstanding service, dedication and leadership on Wednesday, November 8th, 2006 at the New York Athletic Club (180 Central Park South, New York City).

Mr. Smolev has served as a member of the New York City Police Museum Board of Trustees for 3 consecutive terms and currently serves as Vice President and Trustee on its Executive Board.

“For over 150 years members of the New York City Police Department have gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve and protect the people of New York,” said Mr. Smolev. “As a member of the Police Museum Board, I am honored to celebrate their accomplishments and show my appreciation to the men and women in uniform by having an active role in supporting the Police Hero Awards.”

Mr. Smolev is partner-in-charge of FCSMC&C’s Tax, Trusts and Estates Division and has served as an adjunct professor at Hofstra University Schools of Business and Law, teaching accounting, business law, tax law and estate planning. He has edited tax-related professional texts, authored articles for the New York Law Journal and has served as an expert source for a number of Newsday articles.

Mr. Smolev is an impartial Hearing Officer for disputes in the public school system and also practices in the education law area. He is a member of the American, New York State and Nassau County Bar Associations, and the New York State Association of School Attorneys, where he served as President in 1984. He is also a member of the Hofstra University Board of Trustees, the Long Island Cabinet for Israeli Bonds and is a past President of the Pickett Farm Homeowners Association.

CRAVATH VOTED MOST PRESTIGIOUS U.S. LAW FIRM AND FIRST IN CORPORATE IN SURVEY OF LAW FIRM PARTNERS
For the third consecutive year, Cravath has been voted the most prestigious U.S. law firm by partners in The Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms. The survey results, published as part of Vault's 2007 guide to the legal profession, reflect the votes of nearly 900 partners from the U.S.' top 100 law firms. Partners at other firms also ranked Cravath as having the best corporate department. The Firm placed second in overall prestige based on surveys of more than 15,000 associates. Vault's survey of associates also placed the firm within the top three of all firms for its corporate, litigation, M&A, securities and tax practices.

Thacher Proffitt ranked #81 Most Prestigious Law Firm in the Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2007 edition, which was based on a survey of over 15,000 practicing associates in 156 law firms who were asked to rank the top 100 law firms according to prestige. Vault did not assess firms by profit, size, lifestyle, number of deals or quality of service; ranking was based on the perceptions of currently practicing lawyers at peer firms. We were also ranked #5 in Quality of Life: Best of Offices, which was rated by associates on issues such as treatment by partners, formal training, informal training and mentoring, and hours and compensation.

Firm Expands Kansas City & Washington D.C. Financial Services Division
Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP announces the addition of Barkley Clark, Mark Hargrave and Mark Ovington to its Kansas City and Washington D.C. offices. Clark, Hargrave and Ovington previously were part of the Business Law Division at Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP, and will join Stinson Morrison Hecker’s Financial Services Division as partners.

The new partners expand the firm’s nationally recognized Financial Services Division by bringing expertise in secured transactions, payment systems, product warranties, and consumer credit. Thus creating a Financial Services Division that offers a full array of services to financial institutions.

“Stinson Morrison Hecker has a strong national reputation among businesses large and small. With the addition of Barkley Clark, Mark Hargrave and Mark Ovington, we strengthen that position and expand our seasoned team of attorneys within our Financial Services Division,” Mark Foster, Kansas City firm managing partner, said. “Each of them brings a firm commitment to the community and unparalleled expertise to clients.”

Clients of Clark, Hargrave and Ovington include various regional, national and international financial institutions, consumer credit providers and manufacturing companies.

Clark, who practices in Washington D.C., will spend several months initially in Kansas City to become more familiar with the firm and its clients. He will then regularly split his time between Stinson Morrison Hecker’s Washington D.C. and Kansas City office. Hargrave and Ovington will base their practices in Kansas City.

Clark joins Stinson Morrison Hecker after a 17-year tenure at Shook, Hardy and Bacon with a practice focused on banking and commercial law, often serving as an expert witness on the Uniform Commercial Code. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and has written eight books and 30 law review articles on commercial law and banking subjects. His treatises are frequently cited by federal and state courts around the county. Clark has spent over 20 years as a law professor at the University of Kansas, Georgetown Law Center, George Washington University National Law Center and University of Virginia. Clark received his bachelor’s degree from Amherst College and his law degree from Harvard.

Hargrave joins Stinson Morrison Hecker with a practice that focuses on financial and commercial law matters. He specializes in topics involving payment systems, secured lending, and regulatory compliance. He regularly speaks on these issues and has authored several topic-related books. Hargrave earned his bachelor’s degree from Drake University and his law degree from Drake University Law School.

Ovington also joins the firm with a practice that focuses on transactional work with an emphasis on secured lending. He has served as lead counsel in a variety of financial transactions, is a frequent seminar speaker, and has published 20 articles on various commercial law issues. Ovington received his bachelor’s degree from Washington University and his law degree from Vanderbilt Law School.
