Thirteen Calfee attorneys have been chosen as Ohio Super Lawyer Rising Stars by their peers and through the independent research of Law & Politics Magazine. To find Rising Stars, Law & Politics mails ballots to the most recent group of Super Lawyers: the top 5 percent of attorneys in the state. These individuals are asked to vote for the best attorneys who are either 40 or under or who have been practicing 10 or fewer years. They are instructed to vote for lawyers they have personally observed in action. In addition to this, a research team reviews the credentials of potential Rising Stars and assigns points based on a set of defined evaluation criteria.

“Fair Housing Laws and Technology: What To Do When Old Meets
The Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has filed a lawsuit against the popular Internet site Craigslist. The suit cites discrimination by Craigslist in hundreds of housing posts that have included race, gender, and other discriminatory restrictions, according to Chicago Lawyer. The complaint is that Craigslist has violated a key provision of the Fair Housing Act that prohibits discriminatory language in housing advertisements. “‘A lot of blood, sweat, and tears has gone into enforcing the Fair Housing Act from the 1960s till today,’ said Stephen D. Libowsky (CH) of the Chicago Lawyers Committee, which filed the lawsuit in February.” “We’re very concerned and interested in making certain we don’t turn the clock back in any way. . . . There’s no question that the Fair Housing Act, as written, applies to everything and everybody. The question is whether the Communications Decency Act gives certain types of organizations such as Craigslist or other Web-based advertisers a pass. Whether it’s semantics is in the eye of the beholder.

"Trademark Owners Get A Boost Under New Anti-Dilution Law"
Under the Federal Trademark Dilution Act (FTDA), special legal attention will be given to owners of famous marks. The FTDA will protect famous marks against anything that might weaken the distinctiveness of the mark, according to Inside Counsel. "'The bill better defines what it means to be a famous mark,' says Katherine Basile, a trademark attorney in the East Palo Alto, Calif., office of Howrey." "That's important because the concept of dilution provides a fairly broad scope of protection, so the statute should only be used to protect truly famous marks.
