The law firm of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A. is pleased to announce that two attorneys have joined the South Carolina Firm:

Greenville Office
Margaret R. (Meg) Scoopmire joined the Greenville office of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd on June 26, 2006. Serving as Special Counsel, her practice primarily concentrates on real estate, commercial transactions, and corporate matters. Prior to joining the Firm, she was a shareholder in a general business law firm in Greenville, SC.

In her real estate practice Ms. Scoopmire regularly advises clients on all aspects of due diligence, title, permitting, entitlements, acquisition or sale documentation, financing (construction and permanent), leasing, and disposition of commercial real estate. She provides day-to-day advice to commercial and residential real estate owners regarding lease disputes, landlord liability and tenant issues. Ms. Scoopmire has experience in drafting and negotiating real estate purchase and sale agreements, deeds, mortgages, commercial leases, ground leases, transmission tower leases, easements, building access agreements, and other real estate related documents.

Ms. Scoopmire represents borrowers and commercial lenders in all aspects of commercial financing arrangements including asset based lending, construction financing, real estate financing, and equipment financing. She handles all aspects of documenting and negotiating commercial loans, including government guaranteed loans.

Ms. Scoopmire advises her corporate clients on matters such as business formation and choice of entity, corporate and asset sales and purchases, mergers and dissolutions, preparation of corporate structure and governance documents, and general advice on operational matters.

A 1998 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, she received her bachelor’s degree from Furman University (1991). A native of Greenville, she is a member of the South Carolina and Greenville Bar Associations as well as the South Carolina Women Lawyers’ Association. Ms. Scoopmire is admitted to practice in South Carolina and the U.S. District Court of South Carolina.

Columbia Office
R. David Proffitt joined the Firm’s litigation practice area in the Columbia office on July 17, 2006, as an associate attorney working on municipal litigation and regulatory/administrative matters.

Mr. Proffitt has sixteen years of legal, governmental and communications experience. Prior to joining Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A., he served as a law clerk for the Honorable John H. Waller, Jr., and the Honorable E.C. Burnett, III at the Supreme Court of South Carolina. He also worked as a staff attorney at the Supreme Court. A former instructor at the University of South Carolina School of Law, he taught legal writing, analysis, and research for four years to first-year law students. Mr. Proffitt previously was in private practice for three years, focusing on medical malpractice, product liability, personal injury, workers’ compensation, family law and civil litigation.

Outside the legal field, Mr. Proffitt was a reporter for the Summerville Journal Scene (SC), Spartanburg Herald-Journal (SC) and Morganton News Herald (NC), winning several writing awards at each newspaper.

During law school, Mr. Proffitt clerked for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, where he worked on criminal environmental cases. He graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law (1996). While in law school, Mr. Proffitt was a member of the South Carolina Law Review, Order of the Coif, and Wig and Robe. Graduating cum laude in 1986, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where he was the editor of the university’s campus newspaper, The Blue Banner.

Admitted to practice in South Carolina, North Carolina, U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina, and the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, he is a native of Asheville, NC.

Brickley Elected to Garan Lucow Miller’s Executive Committee
Garan Lucow Miller, P.C., with offices throughout Michigan, announces attorney and shareholder, William Brickley has been elected to serve a three-year term on the firm’s Executive Committee. Mr. Brickley assumes responsibilities for Roger Smith whose term has expired.

The Executive Committee includes shareholders Edward Freeland, Frederick Plumb, John Gillooly, John McSorley and William Brickley. These attorneys are the governing body who make decisions on the firm’s overall operational issues.

Mr. Brickley has been with the firm since 1984. He earned his B.S. from Eastern Michigan University and his J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law. He was admitted to the Michigan Bar Association in 1984.

He is a member the State Bar of Michigan, Trial Lawyers and Negligence Law Sections; Genesee County Bar Association; Tuscola County Bar Association and the Oakland County Bar Association.

Mr. Brickley’s primary area of practice consists of defense in civil litigation claims. He is well-known for representing clients in tort litigation, insurance defense, employment law and many areas of municipal law.

He practices in the firm’s Grand Blanc office. He resides with his wife Laura and their two children in Waterford, Michigan.

Elaine Michaud To Lead Devine’s Health Care Practice
Elaine M. Michaud, a shareholder at Devine Millimet, has been named to lead the firm’s Health Care Practice Group. Attorney Michaud provides both counseling and litigation services to institutional and individual clients in the healthcare industry. She represents individual medical professionals and institutions in the defense of medical malpractice claims, while also counseling medical institutions in the areas of policy development, risk management, medical staff affairs, and quality assurance. She also frequently presents seminars to medical professionals and administrators on these issues as well as medical malpractice prevention.

Her list of community activities is extensive. She serves as an Incorporator for New Hampshire Catholic Charities and is a member of the University of Maine School of Law Alumni Board of Trustees. She is an account executive for Heritage United Way and is Chairperson of the Steering Committee for the Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Program. Since 2002, she has served on the New Hampshire Bar Association’s Committee on Professionalism.

Attorney Michaud is licensed to practice in the states of New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College and her J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law.
