American Bankruptcy Institute Chairman Michael P. Richman Joins Foley to Lead National Business Reorganizations Practice
Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) Chairman Michael P. Richman has joined the firm as chair of its national Business Reorganizations Practice.

“Michael's experience as counsel in numerous national bankruptcies, restructurings and creditors' rights litigation, and his longstanding reputation in New York, make him ideal to lead our firmwide practice as well as our strategic bankruptcy initiatives in New York,” said Jon Wilson, chair of the firm's Litigation Department. “He will bring an immediate focus on representation of creditors' committees and equity committees in large chapter 11 cases that will enhance and add significant depth to our highly accomplished roster of bankruptcy practitioners.”

The addition of Richman, who will be based out of Foley's New York office, is the next step in the firm's strategic plan to recruit high-level practitioners and build the firm's bankruptcy and litigation practices nationally and in the New York market.

He is the latest high-profile attorney to join Foley's New York office in the past nine months, following Seth L. Levine who joined the firm from the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York. Foley plans to continue to grow its New York office by adding attorneys to its key niche practices, including intellectual property, intellectual property litigation, complex litigation, corporate and M&A, private equity, and white collar defense and corporate compliance.

Richman, 53, joins Foley from Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP, where he spent the past 17 years as a partner and associate in the bankruptcy practice. He focuses his practice on bankruptcy, restructurings and creditors' rights litigation, with primary emphasis on the representation of secured and unsecured creditors, bank groups, creditors' committees and other parties interested in contested and litigated bankruptcy cases, out-of-court workouts and civil suits. He has been responsible for the prosecution or defense of hundreds of preference cases. He also has creditors' rights litigation expertise in various fields, including fraudulent conveyance, loan enforcement and mortgage foreclosure litigation.

He is the current chairman of the board of the ABI and served as the organization's president in 2004-2005. Richman also is a founding member of the ABI's house band, “The Indubitable Equivalents,” in which he performs as a keyboardist and vocalist. He was recently selected as a 2006 New York Super Lawyer and has been profiled in Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in America: Finance and Industry. He also was named one of twelve “Outstanding Restructuring Lawyers” by Turnarounds & Workouts in 2004.

Richman earned his juris doctorate from Columbia University Law School where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and was awarded the prestigious David M. Berger Memorial Award in honor of Professor Wolfgang Friedman. He also was managing editor of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. He earned an A.B. in political science from Vassar College and attended the London School of Economics and Political Science.
