Lawrence R. Bailey, Jr. new NARTC president
Hodgson Russ LLP partner Lawrence R. Bailey, Jr. has been sworn in as president of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel (NARTC), effective August 1.

Mr. Bailey concentrates his practice in the areas of transportation law, including Federal Employers' Liability Act and other railroad matters; products liability; personal injury defense; civil litigation; and corporate litigation. In addition to his work with the NARTC, Mr. Bailey is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, and the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel.

The NARTC facilitates discussion among defense trial counsel of issues arising from litigation affecting railroads and the railroad industry.

With more than 230 attorneys practicing in all major areas of law, Hodgson Russ is among the 200 largest law firms headquartered in the United States. Fried Frank Names Seven New Partners
Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP announced today that seven lawyers have been elected to the partnership of the firm. As of September 1, 2006, the new partners are Michael J. Alter, Craig Arnott, Tommy P. Beaudreau, Brian Kniesly, Brian T. Mangino, Rob McBride, and David L. Shaw.

Attorneys elected to partner:
Michael J. Alter, an attorney in the Washington DC Tax Department, focuses his practice on federal income taxation, with particular emphasis on the structuring and negotiation of taxable and tax-free corporate acquisitions, reorganizations, spinoffs and dispositions of ongoing business enterprises, the development of partnership and other joint-venture arrangements and tax planning for financings and other capital formation transactions. Mr. Alter joined the firm in 2000. He received his JD, with honors, from George Washington University Law School and his BA, magna cum laude, from Union College. He is admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia and Massachusetts.

Craig Arnott, based in London, heads the firm’s European Antitrust team. He has a particular focus on European, UK and multi-national merger approvals for major private and listed companies, as well as private equity transactions, joint ventures and the application of competition law to commercial strategies. Mr. Arnott joined the firm in 2004. He attended Balliol College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and received his D. Phil and Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford. He received his LL.B., first class hons., and B.A., first class hons., degrees from the University of Queensland, respectively. He has taught at the University of Oxford and University of Sydney. He is admitted to practice in England and Wales.

Tommy P. Beaudreau, an attorney in the Washington DC Litigation Department, focuses his practice on a wide variety of criminal and civil litigation matters, including white-collar criminal defense, internal corporate investigations, monitoring of the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department, defense of False Claims Act suits brought by the United States and qui tam relators, securities fraud and enforcement matters, counseling of government contractors and commercial litigation. Mr. Beaudreau joined the firm in 1997. He received his JD, cum laude, from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he was a member of the Georgetown International Environmental Law Review and a law clerk at the National Treasury Employees Union. He received his BA, with distinction, from Yale University. He rejoined the firm in 2001 after a yearlong clerkship with Judge Jerome B. Friedman, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He is licensed to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia and is admitted to the bars of the United States District Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Brian Kniesly, an attorney in the New York Tax Department, focuses his practice on taxation issues of hedge funds, real estate transactions, REITS, private equity funds and partnerships. Mr. Kniesly joined the firm in 2001. He received his JD from University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1998 and his BA from Ohio State University in 1992. He is admitted to the bar in New York and Connecticut.

Brian T. Mangino, an attorney in the Washington DC Corporate Department, focuses his practice on private equity transactions and mergers and acquisitions representing both private equity firms and public and private corporations. In addition, he regularly advises clients on issues of corporate governance and securities law compliance. Mr. Mangino joined the firm’s London office in 2000 and transferred to the Washington office in 2003. He received his JD from the University of Virginia and his BA from the University of Virginia. He is admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia and Virginia.

Rob McBride, an attorney in the London Corporate Department, focuses his practice on a wide range of financing transactions including international debt offerings, project financings, derivatives, securitizations and other structured finance transactions. He joined the firm in 2005. Mr. McBride received his MA from Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge University and completed his CPE and LPC at The College of Law, Guildford, UK. Prior to his legal studies, Mr. McBride studied at the Konservatorium für Musik, Biel/Bienne in Switzerland. He is admitted to the Supreme Court of England and Wales.

David L. Shaw, an attorney in the New York Corporate Department, focuses his practice on the representation of public and private companies in mergers and acquisitions, private equity and financing transactions. Mr. Shaw joined the firm in 1998. He received his JD from New York University School of Law, his MBA from New York University and his BBA from Emory University. Mr. Shaw is admitted to the bar in New York.

Silvyn Elected President and Hinderaker on Board of the Law College Association for the University of Arizona College of Law
Lewis and Roca is pleased to announced that two attorneys with the firm’s Tucson office have been elected to leadership positions on the Law College Association for the University of Arizona Law College. Ms. Keri Silvyn, of counsel, has been elected President, and John Hinderaker, partner, has been elected to the Law College Association Board.

Ms. Silvyn’s practice is concentrated in the area of zoning and land use planning. She represents private land owners and land entitlements, as well as some local governments. Her representation includes compliance with local and federal land use and environmental regulations, administrative hearings and negotiations with appropriate agencies and neighborhoods as necessary.

Silvyn received her J.D. from University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law in 1997, and her B.A. from University of Arizona, magna cum laude, in 1993.

Mr. Hinderaker practices in the firm’s commercial litigation section with a focus on land use, public governance, and real estate.

Hinderaker received his J.D. from University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law, magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, Arizona Law Review, in 1997. He received his B.A. in economics from University of California, Santa Barbara, with honors, in 1991.

Miller Canfield Attorney Appointed to ICLE's Mediation Advisory Board
Robert E.L. Wright, an attorney-mediator in the Grand Rapids office of Miller Canfield, has been appointed to the Mediation Advisory Board of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE). The board helps identify the most useful educational projects and the best speakers and authors on mediation.

Wright is a Harvard-trained facilitative mediator and neutral arbitrator. He assists others in all types of divorce and custody disputes, as well as commercial, construction and employment disputes. He has over 25 years’ experience in litigation for plaintiffs and defendants with particular emphasis in alternative dispute resolution and commercial litigation, including bankruptcy. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, 2006 edition, for his work as a mediator.

He is a volunteer mediator for the Western Michigan Dispute Resolution Center in Grand Rapids and received its Trail Blazer Award for his leadership role in making peaceful resolution of disputes a possibility for citizens of West Michigan. He was recently appointed to a three-year term on the ADR Oversight Committee of the Kent County Circuit Court.

Wright received his J.D. from Wayne State University Law School, an M.A. in Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, California, and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Western Michigan University.

He is admitted to all courts in Michigan and Florida and is a member of the Association for Conflict Resolution, National Association for Community Mediation, Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan (president), Michigan Council for Family and Divorce Mediation (vice president), American Bar Association–ADR Section and Business Bankruptcy Committee (vice chairman of the Practice Development Committee), State Bar of Michigan–ADR Section - Governing Council and Litigation Section, Grand Rapids Bar Association–ADR, Litigation and Family Law sections, and the American Bankruptcy Institute along with numerous civic and charitable organizations.

He resides in Ada, Michigan with his wife, Arlene.

Joseph J. Baumann Joins Dykema
The law firm of Dykema announces that Joseph J. Baumann has joined the firm’s Government Policy Department as an associate in its Lansing office. Mr. Baumann's practice focuses on state government law and government relations.

Prior to graduating from law school, he was a legal analyst with the Michigan Department of Community Health. At the Michigan Department of Community Health, Mr. Baumann dealt with health care issues involving federal and state confidentiality laws, emergency preparedness, Michigan's Mental Health Code, and state and federal law related to Medicaid and other social safety net programs.

Previously, Mr. Baumann worked in the Michigan House of Representatives as a Legislative Aide to the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. In that role, he managed constituent relations, assisted in development and progression of state budget bills, and aided the Representative in researching and understanding complex pieces of legislation. Mr. Baumann worked extensively with Michigan Departments of Transportation and Corrections budgets, telecommunications regulation, and health related concerns.

A resident of Dewitt, Michigan, Mr. Baumann received his B.A. from Michigan State University and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

Admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Mr. Naselsky received his law degree from Seton Hall University School, where he served as Business Manager of the Seton Hall Law Review. Mr. Naselsky received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lafayette College.
