Two White & Case Lawyers Tapped for Leadership Roles at ABA
White & Case partners William Sloan Coats and Heidi Keefe have been appointed to key leadership positions at the American Bar Association's Section of Science & Technology Law.

Coats has been named Chair of the ABA's Section of Science & Technology Law, and Keefe has been named Chair of that section's Space Law Committee.

The ABA Section of Science & Technology Law works to define the legal frontiers of science and technological innovation and to shape related law and policy. Since its formation in 1974, the section has grown to become a focal point for information and policy on many important issues, such as computer and information security law, privacy, cybercrime, scientific evidence, genetic research and engineering, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

""The Section of Science & Technology Law will continue to lead the way in tracking the latest developments in science and technology and evaluating their impact on society and the law,"" said Bill Coats. ""I am truly honored to be chosen as the Chair of the section and to be part of its important work.""

As section Chair, Coats will be responsible for overseeing the activities and benefits for the 11,000 members of the section, including 24 substantive committees, such as Biotechnology Law, Genetic and Medical Research, E-Commerce, E-Privacy, Information Security, Voice Over Internet Protocol, Homeland Security, Biometrics and Nanotechnology Law; the publication of the section's periodicals, including The SciTech Lawyer, Jurimetrics Journal, an e-newsletter and numerous books; and the section's sponsorship of many continuing legal educational programs.

Coats will also represent the section at ABA events and to outside organizations, including governmental agencies.

An Intellectual Property partner in White & Case's Palo Alto office, Coats focuses his practice on cases involving software copyrights, patents, trademark and trade secret disputes for the software, electronics and movie industries, and bankruptcy issues. Coats represents leading business, computer, and entertainment hardware and software companies in complex intellectual property matters. Some of his clients include Pioneer Corporation, Aztech Systems, Ltd., Avid Technology, BBC Technology, In-Three, Digidesign, Lucasfilm, Ltd., Lucasfilm Entertainment company and its various divisions, and Mesa Boogie.

As Chair of the ABA Section of Science & Technology Law's Special Committee on Space Law, Keefe will be responsible for representing the committee at the Council Meetings, recruiting members for the committee, setting an agenda for the work of the committee and cooperating with the other space law groups within the ABA

Keefe, an Intellectual Property partner in White & Case's Palo Alto office, is a registered patent attorney who focuses her practice on high-stakes patent litigation and jury trials. Her background in astrophysics and publications in the area of space law make her uniquely qualified for her new position on the Space Law committee. Heidi was recently recognized as one of ""The Bay Area's Best Lawyers"" in the January 2006 issue of Bay Area Lawyer magazine.

Vault Ranks Thelen Reid #13 in Quality of Life for "Best in Offices"
Thelen Reid & Priest LLP has been ranked as one of the most prestigious law firms in the world, according to the 2007 edition of the Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms. Thelen Reid is also ranked #13 for ""Quality of Life"" in the ""Best in Offices"" category.

For its 2007 guide, Vault assessed its ""Quality of Life"" rankings from more than 15,000 associates surveyed on the qualities that create the most amenable and enjoyable law firm environment.

Thelen Reid has six newly-renovated offices in New York, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, and Northern New Jersey. The Vault ""Best in Offices"" ranking follows a seven-year investment by Thelen Reid in its workspaces, beginning in 1999 with the relocation of its San Francisco office into newly-built, state-of-the-art facilities. At the end of 2002, the firm simultaneously moved its New York, Los Angeles, and Silicon Valley offices into newly-renovated spaces. The Northern New Jersey office expanded into improved offices in 2004, and the Washington, DC office completed its move into a beautiful, newly-constructed building in 2005.

Thelen Reid's New York office, which features a four-story atrium with stunning views of midtown Manhattan, is the recipient of the ""Excellence in Design/Construction of a New Facility"" award from the Greater New York Chapter of the International Facility Management Association. The office has also been featured in Interior Design magazine, and has been used as a location for a number of major Hollywood motion pictures.

In addition to the ""Best in Offices"" distinction, Vault determined its rankings by surveying more than 16,000 attorneys at more than 150 major law firms across the country. Attorneys were asked to rank the top 100 firms in the world in terms of how prestigious it would be to work for them, with Thelen Reid ranking 91.

Pepper Hamilton to Provide Strategic Legal Counsel to Maryland/D.C. Collaborative for Healthcare Information Technology
Steven J. Fox, a partner with Pepper Hamilton LLP and head of the firm’s health care informatics initiative, has been engaged to serve as legal counsel to the Maryland/D.C. Collaborative for Healthcare Information Technology. Mr. Fox will provide legal advice on electronic health care matters, including issues regarding privacy and security, and user and vendor agreements.

The Maryland/D.C. Collaborative’s goal is to establish a Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) infrastructure linking all components in the Maryland/D.C. health care delivery chain – physician offices, hospitals, clinics, labs, imaging centers, nursing homes, payers and patients – through a secure, private data exchange. This will enhance communication of patient information, quality of care, patient safety, disease management capabilities, clinical and administrative cost reductions, and bio-surveillance/early detection preparedness.

“I am very pleased to work with the Collaborative in connection with the upcoming contract negotiations and related e-health privacy and security issues,” said Mr. Fox. “I have been impressed with the Collaborative’s early vision for a regional health care information exchange network and the critical mass of member and supporting organizations working together to exchange interoperable electronic health information.”

Victor Plavner, M.D., chairman of the Collaborative, said, “We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with Steve Fox and Pepper Hamilton, as they will help us realize our goals. Steve’s level of expertise pertaining to health care contractual and intellectual property matters will be an invaluable asset to our organization.”

He is experienced in the development, acquisition, negotiation, transfer and licensing of complex information systems, networks and software; RHIOs; outsourcing; computerized records management; privacy protection (including HIPAA); consulting/services agreements; and corporate, contractual and intellectual property matters.

Since 1990, Mr. Fox has devoted his practice primarily to health care information technology. He authored a monthly “Q&A” column dealing with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) at HIPAAdvisory.com, and he is co-author of “Guide to Medical Privacy and HIPAA” (Thompson Publishing Group).

The Maryland/D.C. Collaborative for Healthcare Information Technology (www.collaborativeforhit.org) was founded in May 2004 as a nonprofit entity. Members of the Collaborative include Johns Hopkins Medicine; University of Maryland Medicine; MedStar Health; CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield; Aetna; numerous community hospitals; and a number of community physician group practices.
