HAPPY, SATISFIED LAW FIRM ASSOCIATES? AN UPSTATE NY FIRM MAY HAVE THE FORMULA
Too often, talented, ambitious students achieve success and satisfaction in law school only to find their afterlife as an associate in an impersonal, internally competitive law firm to be devoid of satisfaction.

Not so for associates at the 125-lawyer, Rochester-based firm of Harter Secrest & Emery LLP. For the third year in a row, HSE has earned the #1 ranking nationally in a survey of midlevel associate satisfaction conducted by The American Lawyer.

The 2006 survey of third, fourth and fifth year associates at hundreds of firms across the United States probed into associates' levels of job satisfaction, including their relationships with fellow associates as well as partners, and their access to meaningful training and guidance, to pro bono work, and to interesting, high quality work assignments with significant responsibility.

As in 2004 and 2005, HSE earned the honor as “the best place to work” among all participating law firms, something managing partner Maureen Alston called ""a wonderful reflection on every player on the HSE team.” Ms. Alston noted that “HSE's culture of teamwork and mutual respect, by design, encourages our lawyers to compete externally, not internally, and provides early opportunities for lawyers to grow and succeed as professionals. We believe this naturally leads to satisfied, well rounded associates who develop quickly into legal counselors and leaders.

Hogan & Hartson Expands Global Litigation and Aviation Practices With Team of Trial Lawyers
Hogan & Hartson LLP announced today the addition of three prominent lawyers to the firm’s litigation and aviation practices. Thad T. Dameris, Bruce D. Oakley, and Trevor R. Jefferies have joined the firm as partners.

Dameris is a trial lawyer with vast experience in complex business disputes. Dameris has particular experience in dealing with issues that arise in suits involving foreign parties, such as jurisdiction of U.S. courts, foreign sovereign immunity, venue, forum non conveniens, service of process and discovery abroad, and multidistrict litigation. His principal clients include leading U.S. and international aviation and energy companies.

“We are very pleased to have this very highly-regarded group of experienced litigators join us,” said J. Warren Gorrell, Jr., chairman of Hogan & Hartson. “Thad and his team build on our internationally recognized aviation practice, which covers regulatory, finance, M&A, and litigation matters in the U.S., Europe, and China.”

Dameris, Oakley, and Jefferies were previously with Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. They reside in Houston, Texas and are members of the firm’s global aviation and litigation practices.

“The domestic and international footprint of Hogan & Hartson fits our client and practice needs perfectly,” said Dameris. “The firm has world-class aviation, international arbitration, energy, and litigation practices, as well as deep antitrust and international trade skills. We are very excited to build on these capabilities to better serve our shared clients.”

Dameris received his law degree with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 1986 and his bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University in 1982. Chambers USA recently recognized him as a leading aviation lawyer with a national tier one rating in Aviation law.

Oakley is a well-recognized trial lawyer whose practice focuses on complex litigation and arbitration. He has extensive experience in multi-party litigation, including class action litigation — both as a judge and as counsel — and has represented clients in the areas of aviation, energy, finance, manufacturing, and insurance. Oakley served as the judge of the 234th District Court in Harris County, Texas from 2001 to 2005, following his appointment by Texas Governor Rick Perry. He is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Oakley received his law degree with honors from Baylor University School of Law in 1989 and his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University in 1986.

Jefferies’s practice includes general and commercial litigation, with a current emphasis on aviation, insurance, and e-discovery matters. He has tried cases and argued appeals in courts around Texas, and handled complex litigation in New York, Washington, D.C., and Florida. In addition to his litigation practice, Jefferies consults with corporations seeking to minimize exposure through contractual and structural methods.

Jefferies received his law degree with honors from the University of Houston in 1994 and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1981. He served in the United States Air Force for nine years, where he instructed students in the T-38 and controlled an F-15 fighter unit.

Hogan & Hartson Adds National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Leader to Firm’s Washington Office
Hogan & Hartson LLP announced today that Jacqueline Glassman, former deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as a partner. Glassman will be part of the firm’s transportation and legislative practices.

As deputy administrator of the NHTSA, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Glassman had oversight responsibility for the federal agency’s efforts involving highway safety, motor vehicle safety, and fuel economy regulation. She also represented the agency before Congress, in the White House, to other cabinet level departments, and in its international relations. Prior to her position as deputy administrator, Glassman served as acting administrator and chief counsel for the NHTSA.

“Jackie’s impressive breadth of experience, including government agency leadership, in-house corporate counsel work, and a law firm background, will be an asset to Hogan & Hartson,” said Mike House, director of the firm’s legislative practice. “Her extensive knowledge of legal issues in the transportation arena and hands-on experience with the DOT, within the Administration, and with Congress will deepen our firm’s capabilities in transportation and legislative work.”

Glassman was previously senior regulatory counsel for the DaimlerChrysler Corporation, where she was engaged in vehicle safety regulatory compliance, corporate safety-related policy, and drafting legislation.

“Joining Hogan & Hartson is an exciting opportunity for me to implement my general counsel and government experience in the areas of safety and fuel economy on an international platform,” said Glassman.

Glassman received her law degree from Stanford Law School in 1987 and her bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University in 1984.
